It sounds like the CD is slightly mistracking. I have heard the same effect on CD-Rs on occasion, but not a commercial CD, but there is no reason it can't happen on a commercial CD. If so, this is a burn problem, and you should simply return the CD to where you bought it, and get another copy. You should not hear the same problem. Both the original CD release and the 1989 remastered 'Definitive Edition' had severe problems with sound quality, the legacy of a screw-up that occurred when EG parted company with Island Records and pitched its tent with Polydor in the mid-70s. But I'm happy to report that the 30th anniversary edition (at least the one sitting on my shelf in it's diminutive LP style gatefold sleeve) is free of these hideous artefacts, having been mastered, I believe, from a different set of tapes. So, if it's the 30th anniversary edition you've got, it should be crystal clear. Or words to that effect. Lemmy from Motorhead is also on the cover, and they only did one single together as "Motordamned," so the connections to the people on the cover are in some cases pretty flimsy anyway.Get more from the Web. Perhaps some ET readers have a copy of the King Cimson's Promo AAA Sampler, from 1995. I am unable to find it and I am willing to trade a copy of this particular Item. I am searching any Centipede boot with Robert Fripp playing there, I know that such material exists. Please drop me a line and I will send you my list of rare RF related recordings (incluiding KC). Thank You very much. As a devotee of the works of Joyce, Beckett and e.e. cummins (not to mention k.d.lang) I must deplore this lack of understanding of modern literary form. [ Hmm. There's "literary form", certainly. Salut St. Elmo, Try www.cduniverse.com. They've mistakenly sent me the paper sleeves 3 times when I wanted the standard jewel cases. At those times, they told me they ONLY carry the paper sleeves, although their Web site descriptions said otherwise. However, I would email them before ordering, just to make sure they still have the paper versions of those earlier releases. I've just searched for B. B. King albums on the Amazon (UK) site and the search has brought up a forthcoming release by King Crimson on the Sanctuary (?) label. The title is unknown at present but the release date is given as 19 Aug. 2002. None of the tracks listed are familiar - "Flood" "Forever" "Helpless" etc. Presumably someone has got their wires crossed here or is this something we should know about? I haven't had a chance to check out Sid Smith's book yet, but judging from the accolades it probably would be useful as well. If you're able to extend the topic past KC a bit, you'll find an interesting chapter by Theo Cateforis on the "math rock" band Don Cabbalero in my book Progressive Rock Reconsidered (Routledge, 2002). This chapter explicitly addresses their musical debt to both Red-era KC and Steve Reich, with a detailed analysis of the song "Stupid Puma." Don't forget the specific influence of Terry Riley's Rainbow in Curved Air/Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band album (1969) on artists as diverse as The Who (the opening to "Baba O'Riley" as well as the synth interlude on "Won't Get Fooled Again"), Soft Machine ("Out-Bloody Rageous"), and Gong ("A Sprinkling of Clouds")... Sounds like you have a disc fault; return and replace, my remastered LP sleeve CD is fine. To all, Probably waiting to upgrade is a very good idea as there are various permutations and packagings of CDs(not just KC) that get released that seemed design to milk the customer. First the release on CD, then the remaster, then the remaster with extra tracks, then different artwork with different extra tracks. Just look at Procul Harum or the ELP releases, can be very annoying. We used to get great artwork now the sleeves are very poor (Zeppelin)after all the previos analog releases and the Japanese imports, while excellent (Yes, Floyd) are also extortionate. The variation on standards of packaging IMHO is appalling. Considering the amount of resources required to produce is a lot less than 1 CD than 1 LP. And the artwork and recordings have been paid for many years ago. Come on industry, dig me don't bury me... regards Lawrence ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 21:29:15 -0300 From: "Jonathan Boulter" Subject: Absolute Elsewhere Dear Elephant Talkers: Many thanks for all the responses regarding my post about Crimson's "Islands." Most helpful. Can anyone share any information they may have on a bizarre album Bruford appeared on in (I think) 1976? It was an album called "In Search of Ancient Gods" with a band called Absolute Elsewhere. It's been years since I've listened to it (I had it in album form: if it's been released on CD I'd love to know): but here's what I seem to recall. It was the project of some rich Danish (?; certainly some Scandinavians) dilettanti who had a wad of cash to spend. They decided to hire the world's best drummer and, naturally, got Bruford (I guess Joe Morello was busy! I kid, I kid...). At any rate this album was based on the writings of Erik von Daniken (keep your jokes to yourself). Does anyone have any idea if this album is available on CD? Has anyone heard it and can share some views of it? I recall thinking Bruford must have been hard up for cash: if I remember correctly the album contains some of the most bored (perhaps it was laconic, perhaps ironic?) drumming I've ever heard.
