I havent listened to it all yet, but every free moment i get will be on these cds. i did get to listen to the Summit Studios session from 1972 all the way through and i was blown away. best live sound ever. that band has never sounded better! they are so tight even on the improvs, and the best Groon ive ever heard. however i noticed something odd... during The Creator Has A Master Plan, at the height of fripps awesome solo ,he sounds like he is going somewhere, at exactly 13:14 it cuts and jumps foward in the song almost like a needle coming off a record and then it sounds like its winding down very quickly.. its only about 2 seconds though. its odd because its not really a scratch or a defect like that where the song ends when it shouldnt, or something is missing and the time is shorter.. the track is exactly as long as it is supposed to be, but i dont believe the song is complete. anyone else notice this?? my other real problem so far is that on the Beat Club release they only play half of Larks Tongues in Aspic. it ends on the incredibley playful violin part 6 minutes into the song. its teasing you. i love it, i do.. it jsut makes me want to get out the studio version to hear it in its complete masterpiece form. it just kinda bugs me, with Muir in the band and a 30 minute improv to open the set i thought they'd use that style as an advantage and delve deeper into the spacey percussion that opens LTIA pt 1, and play with everything in the song. instead they go shorter on the spacey percussion, and end the song half way through, not even getting to my favorite part in the song! is that something that was discussed? before the show were they like "hey, this is basically our first real gig, we just wrote an incredible masterpiece monster of a song, instead of playing it all lets end it half way for its debut! great idea!", who gave that the OK? or was it like something where Fripp gave a signal to the rest of the band to end it.. or maybe the tape ran out. anyone know? its great, i love the song, its an interesting cut of it and a great part of the set but its SO frustrating! especially since the disc ends after that and doesnt satisfy me by moving from that into Easy Money or something. sigh. i am VERY glad to have all these releases though and im VERY excited for Zoom Club.. just worried about what the sound quality is like. The reference reads: "Still, there's beauty to spare here. Adding cushions of orchestral strings and electronic effects, Armstrong resurrects King Crimson's "Starless" while still maintaining the original's ascetic pathos." I'm totally unfamiliar with Craig Armstrong and his version of "Starless". Has anyone heard it and care to comment? Arnie Schulberg aschulberg at charter dot net ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 13:43:31 -0700 From: "R. Jackson" Subject: King Crimson and H.P. Lovecraft. I'm in preproduction on a student film. We're going to be shooting in June and July of this summer for an October presentation. The film (being shot on Super 8mm) is based on H.P. Lovecraft's "Haunter of the Dark." I had planned to use music from Crimson under a scene where the protagonist is walking around San Francisco (the short story is set in Providence, RI, near where I used to live, actually, but in my retelling it's set here) looking for a church he's obsessing over that he can see from his window. I've considered using "Requiem" or "Nuages" or "Industry" as the music, but I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone had any other suggestions. I'm trying to use the music to develop a feeling of movement, but also to suggest an uneasy or discordant feeling underlying the images of a man seen walking up hills from a medium distance. I'm also trying to imply a sense of melancholy, really, as he goes about his obsession in the midst of the world, but out of touch with it. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Maybe if anyone wants to see the finished product, VCDs of it (it will be a 15-minute-ish short) can be traded around. -Robert Jackson P.S. There's no commercial intent here, BTW. We're just shooting this for a grade and to gain experience at our craft. Hopefully the use of Crimson music in a student film won't enrage anyone with a copyright to protect. If so, we can certainly omit it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 20:46:07 -0400 From: "J. Eric Smith" Subject: Verboten topic . . . elsewhere . . . Live in Mainz just states taht its from them playing in Mainz. its obviously not a full concert. and ive been thinking if these releases represent full concerts id be a little bit disapointed at the length of the show! i love the cds, but they arent that long, i highly doubt they are entire shows. perhaps some of them are, but how can you be sure. so what is the deal with Fracture? why woudl they start it then end it. didnt Fripp notice this when making the disc and think "we should either cut it off completely, or finish out the song".. someone explain this to me ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 15:37:33 +0200 From: Dan Jonsson Subject: Fripp Gear? Live studio and in the Club... Hi all, Just have to say that the Live In Nashville release is all I could want except for one thing. Why is this not a 2CD set? Or even general release. This is so great (brown moments...?)and serves to underline my continuing disappointment that KC are not doing UK dates. But at least they do enough to record music of this quality. I liked 'Dangerous Curves'especially without the ad-libs present on the Level5 tour CD. Sorry Adrian, this was the the only time I was not that keen on your vox presence. Ever. This CD reminds me of the dedication that Roy Harper wrote on his Lifemask album. Dedicated to all those who would never here it. Re:tour UK. I really think that if a few showcase performances such as occupying an entire Jools Holland show would be appropriate. Let people realise what they are missinhg out on. Anytime I mention KC to someone they think KC was some folk group from the 60s. Won't this line up and their music change that idea. For RF and DGM to pursue their internet aims they have to drag the water to the horse in this case. Then the ones that will drink, will. (RF influence craftily inserted there...) All those axe fiends will realise what they are missing out on. Adrian's solos. Omigod.... Bring on the Nuevo Metal album please. More 2001 live KC Club releases please. Sorry, I have Admit to being less keen on the rehearsal cds. These are really good for listening to how these guys work and are excellent recordings but (this is my fault) I seem to expect a rehearsal cd to be 'another studio release, rougher but an 'unreleased' studio album. Not quite. Not to worry. Live in Nashville is essential. One last thing. Bill Bruford commented in the notes for 3 of a Perfect pair that KC abandoned an album prior to this release. Is this abandoned album not a superb idea for a CLub release? Yes it is. Also, (does he ever stop...not yet...) On the Schizoid Man EP it mentions a USA 2 Live album. 'USA 2'? 'USA 2'! Hard enough getting 'USA.'without there being a 'USA 2' Where, what is this and why do I not have them both..? see ya Lawrence ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 May 2002 13:36:52 EDT From: Belewp at cs dot com Subject: Spiral Architect son Insect If you want to hear a METAL song with what I believe to be a heavy King Crimson(think Larks 3) influence check out the song Insect by Spiral Architect. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 20:49:15 +0400 From: Vladimir Kalnitsky Subject: KC rarities from Russia Hello, brothers and sisters! I eagerly bought it when it came out and was thrilled when I saw the cool sleeve. (I was young and impressionable). The album itself, though, was very poor. I only played it 2 or 3 times and then sold it. I thought long and hard about it because, after all, I was about to sell a KC album but it went. As the guy said, bad editing, too many overdubs and the actual playing didn't seem to hot. Now, Earthbound, on the other hand, I loved and still do. Admittedly the sound quality is poor but there was a real rawness that shone through unlike many of the more recent live releases that have been prodded and tweaked at the studio desk. Also, when it was released, in the UK at least, it was the budget price 'Help' imprint so it was very welcome to a cash strapped school kid like me. I think it was #1.49 ($2.00) in 1970s money. [ Yep, it was -- I remember the "Help" label with affection -- Toby ] Other 'HELP' releases included ELP's 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. Ah, those were the days of record company philanthropy. I just recently got an alarm clock, relieving my wife of the burden of having to wake me each AM (we get up at different times, her first.) I got one that plays cd's, allowing the option of having a cd wake me up. I had an extra copy of Level Five, so I keep it in there-- premise being, no human alive could sleep through that racket! So now, after two months, there is only one King Crimson song that my wife knows the lyrics to. And she sings them constantly. It is the one that goes, "Could you turn the lights down, please?
