Here are excerpts for Crimson fans. First a reminder that The Artist Shop is giving away a free pair of tickets to NEARfest 2002, but time is running out. May 1st is the last day to enter. You'll find all the information to enter at . Available now from Discipline Bill Bruford's Earthworks/Footloose & Fancy Free ....double CD "Over hundreds of nights and thousands of concerts, the imperceptible removal of grime and accretion will, you hope, let your light shine forth more brightly," says Bill Bruford. Bruford has, by his own count, played some 2800 concerts since his light began shning in the early 1970's as a singularly brilliant art-rock drummer with Yes and King Crimson. Now on this double live album, Footloose and Fancy Free, with tunes drawn mainly from studio albums A Part and Yet Apart and The Sound of Surprise, this composer and master-drummer polishes the diamond on his current instrument of choice; the acoustic sax-piano jazz quartet. Plucked from London's jazz scene, the quartet includes Patrick Clahar on tenor and soprano saxophones, Steve Hamilton on piano and Mark Hodgsonon double bass. soundbite - Recently released by Musea Sombre Reptile/In Strum Mental ....import CD Its the first album by this french band from Bordeaux, but SOMBRE REPTILE has existed since 1977, and gave a contribution to the Musea album " Enchantement " in the eighties. Deeply influenced in the beginning by King Crimson, Fripp and Brian Eno, the band has found its own musical identity: a very original rhythm basis, with ethnic moments, and inspired, eclectic dialogues between the Dedieu brothers (guitars/keyboards), are the musical foreground of these seven mid-long instrumental pieces. This beautiful "Experimental/Ethno-Prog" music is always melodious and worked-out: nice surprise! soundbite - On our import preorder page BRUFORD,BILL-FOOTLOOSE & FANCY FREE + 1 (2CD) Japanese edition of the legendary drummer's 2002 live release. Printed in the 1995 Tour book (which may have been reprinted from another source): "[Eric's book] is a book which I asked Eric not to write. It has one very good chapter (on the Guitar Craft course which Eric attended) and several chapters on King Crimson." Eric's work should be seen as a companion piece. Sid's book brings a lot of insight, but how could Eric - or any of us, for that matter - have known such privy information? Mr. Tamm's detailed research, along with much thought-provoking and heartfelt opinions (I still find his breakdown of "Starless" fascinating) should not be overlooked. I hope another printing - perhaps with an update as he did with Eno's biography - will appear soon. Good luck to you, Peter. One final question (for now): I'm missing the gatefold edition of ITCOTCK. Anyone have one for sale? It sounds close enough to the 80s KC (while being a trio) that this >might be interesting to other ET-ers. Check them out, see if you like them. I actually stumbled across them too about a month ago. Their producer, J Robbins, has been the brain behind a lot of good music in DC over the last few years. Starting with his own bands Jawbox and then Burning Airlines, to other bands he's produced like my favs Dismemberment Plan (very very VERY good, check out Is Terrified....), Compound Red, and Shiner. Other members of Jawbox went on to start the DeSoto record label which houses a lot of the bands related to this collective. All of it falls in the "post-punk" category of other DC bands like Fugazi. It seems though like that Faraquet have dropped somewhat off the map, the album The View From This Tower came out I believe in 98 or 99 and I haven't heard anything about them since. Their website also seems to have been dormant for a great while. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 00:18:28 +0100 From: David Reilly [mailto:crispycat at hotmail dot com] Subject: The Supposed Demise of DGM Lighten up guys. If you read Fripp's diary entries on the subject you can plainly see that he's suddenly been hit by the realisation that anyone else who starts their own "record company on a shoestring" is hit by - the vast majority of the CD buying public is not really interested in music they don't already know about or they haven't seen on the TV or heard on the radio. The three little words are "very expensive marketing". He's lucky he has King Crimson which was already a marketable name prior to DGM. He's ended up with King Crimson subsidising the work of everyone else on the label. He's tried to be a good samaritan to various artists whom he thinks worthy of his support. Unfortunately, without the marketing clout of Sony or AOL/Time/Warner, there's just not enough interest. The sums of money both he and David Singleton have pumped into the project are large but just not large enough to get the returns required. None the other artists on the label has the cult support that Crimso has, to allow a enough sales to recoup the, in mainstream industry terms, miniscule expenditure laid out. Not only that but, to paraphrase him, some of the artists reckoned they were on to a great thing - signed to a non rip off record label where they get to keep copyrights etc, plus their records get put out into the market. The problem is that, for these sorts of artist, unless they are signed to a rip-off record label that's going to take the copyright on their product so that they have something which is going to give them a return on their investment, what's the point?? The music business is a business - it's there to make a profit - DGM isworthy but flawed idea and Robert has just realised this. I'm sure we'd all love it to continue from the pureply personal selfish viewpoint of all those lovely King Crimson CDs but let's be honest here, even when the Rosenbergs' CD was being shipped with a second free copy to give to a friend, how many people bought it? Certainly not enough for Bob and Dave to get their money back. So - DGM - an admirable idea - just doesn't work in the big bad real world. But it's still there and will continue I'm sure - after all, there has to be a mechanism to punt out all those unreleased KC recordings to us. For all Bob's moaning about how he's been ripped off over the years, if he hadn't been ripped off, who would have heard of Crimso. Just as he wanted the cash for creating the music, the men in suits wanted the cash for telling everybody about it. It's a quid pro quo with the emphasis on Quid (for non UK readers quid slang for one pound sterling) Now....when's the next KC Collector's Club CD coming out?? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 11:46:13 +0200 From: Roderich von Detten Subject: essential collectors'club releases good evening hippies, concerning the "essential collectors' club releases" - question, i would like to point at KCCC #4: King Crimson live at Cap D'Agde 1982 - the favorite of my top 3 releases: a very powerful gig, with stunning versions of neil & jack, larks' and THE SHELTERING SKY, which is really superb and a true "must-have" for a krimson -enthusiast (but you should listen to the version from stoneybrook ny on 28 02 1982 from the indisciple mining rocks-bootleg, which is even better: a revelation, to be true - never has any krimson-live-piece touched me more (sorry for that..)) so: when asked for my top three KCCC-releases, i would suggest to go for KCCC # 4, besides KCCC # 18 (detroit 1971) and KCCC # 10 (central park 1974) greetings roderich ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 10:05:40 -0400 From: Steve Rewa Subject: internet music In the wake of the recent happenings of DGM, I seem to be picking up a bunch of aversion to buying music on the internet in general. I can understand it, but at the same time it really surprizes me. Granted I may be making more out of this than is really there. I buy nearly all of my cd's through CDNow. It has nothing to do with impulse shopping or an aversion to record stores, but I simply can't find what I want outside the net. Tower just doesn't carry Focus. I might be living in a musical black hole, but that's just the way it is. I admit that things probably cost a couple bucks more on the net than they would in a tangible state due to shipping and what not, but you take waht you can get. It would surprize me if most of you weren't in a similar situation. Show of hands, readers: how many people think Joe Average has even HEARD of this label? Marc, you do not say whether you know of this label or not, but I would be surprised if you did not. Marc happens to be buds with Percy Jones so the label as released some Percy related projects too, including a great double live Brand X cd. So my hand is raised high. Either way can > anyone help me out? Sorry to disappoint you, Ryan, but "TVC15" is in 4/4 the whole way through. This is most obvious during the bridge (1 is on the "trans" in "transition" and "transmission"). During the verses and chorus, most of the lines start on the upbeat of 1, which is probably why you think it's more complicated than it is. -- Craig J. For example, I seem to recall that USA's "Asbury Park" was an improv taken from a live performance at Asbury Park. The Live disc from the "Frame by Frame" boxed set has a performance of "Asbury Park", which, I assume, is the same performance. Do any of the other USA performances exist elsewhere? In other words, could USA already be released on CD and we just never realized it? - Tom ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 18:21:52 +0100 From: "Jon Scase" Subject: KCCC I had attempted to renew my subscription to the Club at the end of March, just after the release of Live in Nashville - having been a member from the beginning and having now received all 18 releases. When I saw the message about the Club on the DGM site I e-mailed DGM to find out whether I was or was not still a member. I have today received a reply to the effect that my renewal has been cancelled and that I will need to order releases separately from DGM. I was told that Club 20 will be released in about 3 weeks. It's a shame, but I guess will be no great hardship to do this. Hopefully the club will be resurrected in some form in due course, but anyway it seems that in the meantime the releases will continue. The original rationale for a subscription based club was that the commitment / money was needed upfront - maybe these releases being open to anyone will mean that there will be greater uptake - if there is not I suppose they will cease, so keep on buying! It has been, I think, a privilege and a pleasure to have an insight into the development of the music that never would have been possible through the commercial releases alone. The main reason I don't want them to do this has to do with the ticket prices and the length of the show. I didn't go to the last Los Angeles Tool/KC show because the tickets cost $100. A friend went, and said that Crimson played for less than an hour. If I had paid a hundred bucks for a show that short I would have been furious. I am very glad I didn't go to that show. I very much want to see them on this tour, but I think that price is highway robbery. I realize this will probably piss off some readers, but I don't care. Concert ticket prices are out of control. And King Crimson is not an opening act. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 23:11:34 -0700 From: "Mark Tucker" Subject: Ne'er Too Late 2 B Ignint Re: antipedantic at webtv dot net (Andre La'Plume) >If posters would consider the courtesy of short contributions, perhaps Mr. >Tucker would finally have the time to complete all those back issues of >"Towards More Picturesque Speech."
