Does anyone have any suggestions for musicians or groups working in a similar style? I can't recall having heard anything else quite like these. Thanks in advance for any help. - David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 19:05:36 -0400 From: "Chris Deming" Subject: Guitar One / Time There are a couple Crimson/Fripp references in the May issue of Guitar One magazine. The first one doesn't really mean anything, but I think its kind of funny: "New York session ace Frankie Romano, whose credits include Destiny's Child, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, the Isley Brothers, and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs, as well as appearances on Letterman, Leno and BET, represents the '21st Century Schizoid Man,' to quote King Crimson." The second one is in the Basic Training column by Douglas Baldwin about finger exercises: "I was reintroduced to Fig. 1 at one of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft seminars in 1985" (Fig. 1 is the notation for a finger exercise) On another subject, in light of the discussion on odd time signatures, I think these words, spoken over the music in Frank Zappa's "Toads of the Short Forest" from "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" are kind of funny: "At this very moment on stage, we have drummer A playing in 7/8, drummer B playing in 3/4, the bass playing in 3/4, the organ playing in 5/8, the tamborine playing in 3/4, and the alto sax blowing his nose." - Chris Deming Remember The Future - Progressive Rock Radio http://pages.cthome.net/beatfreq/remember.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 11:13:30 -0400 From: Kyle Partridge Subject: Re: Is There Still A DGM? Due to overwhelming curiousity, I looked into this matter and found that all the relevant issues were described in detail in the last few entries of Robert's diary... http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/diary/diary-RobertFripp.shtml But to sum up, my impression was that they were re-evaluating so nothing is 100% decided yet. the Wombat ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 14:33:08 -0400 From: "Kris M" Subject: Re: KC Video Scam ::Just a note that yes, I got that email too. What's the scoop Toby, did ::someone scam all of our emails? I didn't check the web site out initially, ::but Dave is right. The content is, er, questionable... I remember many months ago, there was a guy who was advertising videos and bootleg CDs/tapes through this list. That was soon after I joined when I also posted often [then school started up and I didn't really have time to do much more than read ET]. Well, since I haven't posted since that long ago, I think it may have been that same guy. It was also sent to my "Junk Mail" folder, because, if anyone else noticed, it's not addressed to your e-mail address, specifically. Instead, it's addressed to the same e-mail address from which it was sent, making it a spam list. Sadness that someone would join this list for the sake of obtaining e-mail addresses to spam. Chris Cowan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 12:11:54 -0700 From: "Dwight Broeman" Subject: Tony Levin Band & Agent 22 I must second David's post regarding the performance of the Tony Levin Band at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. They were very tight and creative with Jerry Marotta playing the sax and using funky fingers on certain songs. It was hilarious and entertaining. They played "Sleepless" and "Elephant Talk" as well as "Back in NYC (Genesis-The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway), and Dog One (written in the early '80's with Peter Gabriel and never released until Tony produced it). Jessy Gress is a great guitarist (formerly of The Todd Rundgren Band and editor of Guitar Player Magazine). Of course there was Larry Fast whom I have admired for years. As well as being some of my favorite musicians, one would be challenged to find four musicians that would equal their humbleness as well as their great personalities. Travel to see them play again? You bet I am. Agent 22 was excellent as well. They play a lot of coffee houses down in San Diego. Worth a visit if you are in town. I'm afraid this might not help you... Allan Holdsworth will gig at ROPPONGI PIT-INN, Tokyo, Japan on May 2nd to 6th. This has been a kind of annual events for these years for me :-) > Ps. Somehow connected with Crimso, isn't it? I know once there was a mailing list for AH(Atavachron), then it turned into FuseNet to change its scope for general fusion music. Of course it still includes AH topics. Back issues are available on the Web, at: http://www.egroups.com/list/fusenetdigest/ I might be going to post there about the gig above. regards, Takaaki Higuchi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 21:35:27 +0200 From: "ahimsa" Subject: Video Scam Greetings all regarding the video scam, would this be a company claiming to be based in Argentina, called "Vodoo Videos"? I received an unexpected email with KC and a list of other artists' videos being advertised: some quite hard to get stuff, so I guess someone pitched an interesting scam if that's what it is. I ditched the message so didn't have the alleged "pleasure" (??) of visiting the website. Cheers Andrew ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 18:47:23 -0400 From: "Peter Badore" Subject: 3 things Hi again, all, 1. In light of the recent speculation of KC/turntables, I'm not against it, but it seems less likely to happen as opposed to computers. I'm surprised no one has brought this up yet. Any comments? 2. I, too, have received the e-mail about videos, and, yes, it's obvious that the sender either has access to or has created his/her own list from ET somehow. [ Let me reiterate. The ET mailing list is 100% private. We NEVER release addresses. -- Toby ] 3. I just spent another $96 on my KCCC subscription renewal right before DGM shut down. I want to believe everything is going to be okay, but human nature and a type "A" personality can be strong conflictions to a belief (well, okay, the personality isn't that strong). So if anyone can give us an update and a good dose of assurance that things aren't as bad as they seem, I would greatly appreciate it. Like if you count a basic 4/4 >as 1-2-3-4-5 / 1-2-3 ? I don't want to be obnoxious but, are you sure this 9/8 doesn't sound like an odd time signature? And check "Riding the Scree" (not 'In The Rapids' as I said a couple of ETs ago)... Pretty odd 9/8, too, with an awesome solo by Banks. And it's one of my favorite things to play on drums (I just think it as 4/4 plus a quarter). Edgar ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 09:31:30 +0200 (MEST) From: "Serial Joker" Subject: A lazy Starless cover by Craig Armstrong Craig Armstrong (the producer of Massive Attack) has released his new album - As If To Nothing - and it contains a cover of Starless... But that's what I would not call a cover... Why? You just have a look in the folder, about the song Starless II and you can read "sample from "starless - king crimson - 1974". And when you listen to this wonderful song, you discover that the track is the 4 minutes of the first part of Starless with a conclusion of a shadowy piano in the distance with a bass'and'drum... As part of my research I have read Eric Tamm's book about RF, and in the first chapter it actually states that RF didn't even want the book to be published, and that he should go and ask Brian Eno for his assistance in writing a book. Does anyone know what RF thinks about this book being published, and how it's also being referenced on the ET website?
