The tour takes us across California this week. Then we fly to St. Louis, for a show with Tony Levin and his band. From there we drive North, up to Montreal and Quebec, then South to Frederick, Maryland. This is followed by a long haul to Dallas, Austin and our last show in Houston on April 27. We have nicknamed this tour: the Crazy Agent with no sense of Geography tour... CGT just finished rehearsing in San Jose, CA, a little nervous about the long drives, but looking forward to more concerts. Our new CD entitled CG3+2 has been mastered in England by David Singleton and Alex Mundy. Yesterday we listened to it together, and we are very excited about this new CD, which will surprise many a CGT fan! CG3+2 will be available sometime this summer at CGT Direct - http://www.cgtrio.com/cgtdirect.htm and at CGT Concerts. Paul had some sad news he wanted me to relay: His pet, Asha Sheltie dog, passed away last week after a long illness. Please send him and his wife Stacey your good thoughts, prayers, and wishes. Asha was the pretty dog who debuted on Paul's first diary entry over two years ago. Speaking of diaries, Paul's on-line diary is no longer being kept at the DGM website, but will continue soon at cgtrio.com. We are setting things up so all three of us will be able to post. In the meantime, please see the CGT Roadcam at http://www.cgtrio.com/roadcam/ to read about our life on the road and see photos of the current tour. For our friends in Europe, there will be a performance of the Metropole Orchestra at the Congresgebouw in Amsterdam on June 29. On the program are two Robert Fripp soundscapes, transcribed by Bert Lams and arranged by Andrew Keeling. Very likely CGT will be there too during that time, and we'll do short tour in Holland and Italy. Looking forward to an excellent tour. Hope to see you at our shows this month (schedule below)! I just can't imagine playing -"Apocalypse in 9/8" or "In the rapids" (both from Genesis) the way you -propose to count it (1-2-3). Very difficult. Oh, never mind. 9/8 is usually counted in 3 groups of 3s, but not always. In Apocalypse it's counted as 3-2-2-2 rather than 3-3-3. This makes it a closer relative of 7/8 (in its 3-2-2 count) and 5/4 (as 3-3-2-2) than 9/8 as 3-3-3. Heck, it's possible to take something in 4 and make it an odd time signature. There's a Gentle Giant song that's in four that's very hard to count until you manage to figure out where 1 is. -dh -- Don Hosek, bassist http://don.dream-in-color.net/ Dream in Color - http://www.dream-in-color.net/ http://www.mp3.com/DreamInColor/ 312/953-3679 don at dream-in-color dot net "When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. Nik put in a request for "Pre-KC Jamie Muir songs".. I can suggest some material I have stumbled across that's quite enjoyable, which features Jamie Muir. Going back to the late'60's-early-70's, you will find that Jamie was part of the British Jazz Avant-Garde scene. He was primarily hanging out with various configurations of the Music Improvisation Company (Company). The ECM release of 1970 (MIC) is quite good and also features Derek Bailey and Evan Parker! INCUS has re-released various material from this period. The "MIC 1968-1971" release has Muir cover art, as does "Dark (Dart) Drug", which I have yet to hear. Also noteworthy is the 1983 recording "Ghost Dance", featuring Michael Giles, David Cunnigham and Muir; on PIANO. I believe the time in-between leaving Crim was spent in a Monastery, as mentioned in 'The Great Deceiver" booklet. I hope this is helpful. I just can't imagine playing > "Apocalypse in 9/8" or "In the rapids" (both from Genesis) the way you > propose to count it (1-2-3). Very difficult. Oh, never mind. 9/8 is actually a compound signature, so it is not as common as 4/4, 3/4, etc.; however, it is probably the second most used compound signature after 12/8. Since it is a compound signature, it is most often counted as "1-and-ah 2-and-ah 3-and-ah" which makes it similar to linking three bars of 3/4 together with the first beat of the first "bar" receiving the heaviest accent. The problem with trying to count "Apocalypse in 9/8" is that Genesis is playing in polyrhythm and the entire "movement" is not in 9/8. Although Tony Banks is for the most part playing in 9/8, Mike Rutherford is playing in a syncopated 3/4 against Banks. In the break between the verses, Banks' phrasing shifts to 12/8 while Rutherford still plays the synocopated 3/4 riff. (I have never been great at rhythmic analysis from recordings, but this is what I can get out of it). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Apr 2002 18:16:50 -0500 From: MDJSocial at aol dot com Subject: '72 band Noticed Club Selection 20 is 1972. Now the piece has found its own voice in my ears. However, it gives me the general impression that almost all of the COL and new material is a sequel of the themes presented in Nashville and developed by the ProjeKcts. The only "new" things are Dangerous Curves (thrilling on Level 5, disappointing on Club 19 to me) and Virtuous Circle (which for the moment, is only extended noodling), ie the ones that were clearly influenced by Pat. I don't mean I don't like the new material, in fact everything except Circle thrills me after a few listens. But I miss some variety, some balladry, some brutal surprises. This question has been burning away for some time at the DGM GB, and it's response, drawn from contemporary wisdom, also turns, as it were, on the reason and usefulness of the original and the resurrected Diaries themselves. This piece of contemporary or recently contemporary wisdom comes from the very wise, just and decent Mullah J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote on the subject the following useful input, so far unstated, or unconceived by all players, yet placed here for all due to it's universal usefulness: J.R.R. Tolkien in a letter to Deborah Webster - October 25, 1958 Quotes : J.R.R. Tolkien : "I do not like giving 'facts' about myself other than 'dry' ones (which anyway are quite as relevant to my books as any other more juicy details). Not simply for personal reasons; but also because I object to the contemporary trend in criticism, with its excessive interest in the details of the lives of authors and artists. They only distract attention from an author's works (if the works are in fact worthy of attention), and end, as one now often sees, in becoming the main interest." Justly, well-put, as always. And, a delightful fodder for discussion as to all issues currently at hand.
