Meanwhile, here are a few excerpts of interest to Crimson fans. Coming soon from DGM John Paul Jones/The Thunderthief Legendary Led Zeppelin artist and multi-instrumentalist, John Paul Jones, releases The Thunderthief in February following the success fo his first solo album, Zooma. The Thunderthief is a 9-track stormy adventure; from roaring bass-riffs, to moments of acoustic beauty and calm. Bursting with Jones' talent on an incredible range of instruments - including 4, 6, 10 and 12-string bass, bass steel guitar, piano, tripleneck mandolin, kyma, koto, autoharp and ukelele - the album also features 4 vocal tracks, with lyrics by John Paul Jones and Peter Blegvad, plus contributions from guest soloists Adam Bomb and King Crimson's Robert Fripp. John Paul Jones plans to follow the album release with an extensive tour in 2002. Available now from Magna Carta Niacin/Time Crunch Niacin's music is a delicious combo of rock and jazz sounds which are tantalizing on their own, gut-punch powerful when properly combined: the thick and rich atmosphere of John Novello's B3 organ, Dennis Chambers' locomotive-with-an-intelligent-mind-of-its-own drumwork, and the finger-breaking bass work of the legendary Billy Sheehan. On Time Crunch, their fifth album and second for Magna Carta, they shatter preconceptions of the jazz/fusion trio just as swiftly as a hammer shatters a watch. Prog-heads will be delighted to see that one of the two covers on this album is the legendary King Crimson tune "Red." (The other, by the way, is Jan Hammer's "Blue Wind.") The song always carried a good deal of menace, but filtered through the thick Niacin tone, it sounds positively terrifying. "Red was an interesting tune," says Novello. "Billy wanted a very distorted B3 sound, and so we went in that direction. Reminds me of Mike Ratledge's organ tone from the band Soft Machine." Time Crunch will take you through a dozen moods, leading you firmly, sometimes gently, through soundscapes that are nostalgic and retro, and yet, at the same moment cutting edge and modern. It will lead you from the power-funk of "Elbow Grease" to the elegance of "Glow" (a song dedicated to John's wife, Gloria Rusch Novello, who lost her battle to breast cancer last year), and back again. soundbite - Vapourspace & Various Artists/Sonic Residue From Vapourspace That's right, a remix project !! Our friend Vapourspace (Mark Gage) has been remixing tracks from many of our artists into a brand new album. Tracks from Steve Walsh, Niacin, Tempest, Liquid Tension Experiment, Bozzio Levin Stevens, Steve Morse and Attention Deficit have been transformed into brand new pieces of music. Here is a bit of what our friend Jedd wrote for the Ytsejam website: The record starts simply enough-it ploughs its way through three brilliant takes on three brilliant tracks: Attention Deficit's "Girl >From Enchilada," Niacin's "Blue Mondo," and Steve Morse's incomparable "Led On," and sends them into a new existence where they become extended, layered head trips that will please even the purest purist proggie. You get the feeling, listening to these tracks, that they were all born this way, brought into the world amidst the funky noise and late-night glow that Gage places upon them and that's as it should be. Like an artist taking on a cover tune, Gage makes these tunes his own: Liquid Tension Experiment's "Another Dimension" and Tempest's "Jenny Nettles" also take on previously inconceivable dimensions as Gage works his magic with machine, tape, and counsel. And, while those are but two of his masterworks (check out what he does to "Melt" and "Dark Corners," both from Bozzio Levin Stevens) the real stunner here is Steve Walsh's dark epic "Kansas," a piece that, in its new state, takes on the deepest meaning. soundbite - Available on our Manticore page Emerson Lake & Palmer/Live at the Royal Albert Hall ....DVD-NTSC Now available on DVD, rock legends Emerson, Lake & Palmer in their spectacular 25th anniversary concert at The Royal Albert Hall. Taking a friend's challenge to try & make a record 'the old fashioned way', with a budget of less than 200 pounds, Haskell wrote & recorded 'How Wonderful You Are' which drew unprecedented listener response after being played on British radio, later becoming Radio 2's single of the week & one of the station's most requested records in the stations history. Haskell began his career in the 1960s with cult band The Fleurs De Lys. He was also part of King Crimson, played bass for Cliff Richard, jammed with Hendrix & played with Otis Redding. 12 tracks. Regarding the listing above for the Daryl Hall/Sacred Songs Japanese remaster, my import distributor also listed a whole slew of Hall & Oates releases, too. I seem to recall that Fripp actually guested on a track or two of one of their albums, but I don't remember for sure which one it was, possibly Along the Red Ledge. If someone knows for sure which it is, please confirm. Also, Adrian Belew and The Bears are on the road! Those dates have already been posted to ET, so I won't do so again. However, if any of you missed the dates, I've got them posted at . Brad Wilmot ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 20:42:53 -0000 From: "Andrew Pitchford" Subject: Lone Rhino & Twang Bar King I've agonised over whether to send this post, so here goes. Being the owner of mint vinyl copies of Adrian's Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King, I hit on the idea of digitising them on to CD. Used my Rega Planar 3 turntable into a NAD 3020B (which has the external pre-power separation) pre-amped out to my soundcard, then used Groove Mechanic to record the wave and (incredible piece of software) de-click/scratch, de-rumble and de-hiss the sound wave - burnt to CD and sat back and listened to the opening bars of Big Electric Cat - awesome, a near perfect copy. Likewise Twang Bar King, Adrian's rendition of the Beatles' I'm Down is just manic. Never really get to play my vinyl nowadays but these two 'CDs' haven't left the player all week. Now the tricky part, I've got the re-conditioned wav files which I was going to trash - any UK subscribers that are desperate for a copy (personal use only) drop me an email and perhaps we could do a trade. Also, digitised Futurama (another deletion) by Be Bop Deluxe, now Bill Nelson what a great guitarist. Love to see Fripp, Bill Nelson and Andy Summers do a UK G3. Andy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 00:45:49 EST From: Rejual at aol dot com Subject: Greatest Guitarist...? The answer to that question does not exist. As "Laverne Munari" wrote on ET #933, a person can answer that with only a subjective answer. However, several excellent points were addressed: Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Steve Vai can very well be called geniuses of the electric guitar! As the player with heart and soul, a completely idiosyncratic style and approach, Jeff Beck is THE MAN. Frank Zappa was also an excellent player, but excelled more with compositions that stretch the instrument and music in general to great extents. Steve Vai is the absolute perfectionist, the "I can do it all amazingly extraordinarily without breaking a sweat," and do that which has never been done, this applies to Jeff Beck, as well, and make it work perfectly is part of Vai's brilliance. Pick up Vai's "Alien Love Secrets" and you'll understand. I could continue on and on, but I'll leave it at that for now.
