Dear Elephant Talk: There has been much speculation about Fripp's use of of the term Level 5, including germ warfare protection etc. I suggest that ET'ers simply check out the website for Fripp's school of guitar (www.guitarcraft.com) and read about the ascending levels of craft!! The following is verbatim from this page: "Level Five is where the student becomes apprenticed to Guitar Craft, and a commitment is taken to live one's life according to the spirit of this particular way of craft. In a few words, it is this: we act on principle and move from intention. Some may become professional musicians, but this is neither necessary nor appropriate for all. " I think this answers the question...perhaps Fripp is directing this towards his student Trey Gunn and other students who will carry the King Crimson flame on after the Grandmaster decides to retire? This was discussed on ET a few weeks back. It's happened at least a handful of us. Unfortunately I lost my receipt so I can't take it back. I wrote DGM and they said "it only happened with a few discs" and can't do anything to help me. Sounds like taking it back to the store is not a guaranteed way to get a good one anyway. I have a feeling the problem was with a much larger run than they are letting on to... just that a lot of people haven't noticed yet or think it's just their player. How would anyone pull off (arbitrarily, tastefully, better than the original?) extending the length of a piece of such classically perfect internal proportions? I've always regarded Red as a particularly well-constructed piece precisely because of its intrinsic balance. The length, number of repetitions, location of e.g. the cello interlude in relation to the whole are far from arbitrary. So what has me wondering is have Sheehan & Co found *another* perfect balance? What are the odds, eh? I hate to have to go to the trouble, but it seems there's no choice for me but to check it out just in case. Although I'll venture my hunch: a case of underestimation on the part of Niacin, overenthused and as a result foregoing one of the essential qualities of the piece...? (I'd be delighted to be proven wrong...) All the best to ET staff and readers for the new year! Nic ------------------------------ Date: Tuesday, 1 Jan 2002 20:46:09 From: mrkndrew at cinci dot rr dot com (Mark Stansbery) Subject: KC & Rock Hall Happy New Year from Cincinnati, Ohio. John Wylam's post in ET #927 really struck a chord with me. In November, 2000 as I steped outside the Odeon Theater after experiencing live the lastest incarnation of King Crimson, I thought of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, just a short distance away. What hit me was the irony that a band of KC's musical integrity, vision, creativity, and contribution to modern music had not and probably would never be inducted. What a shame. I then visited the Rock Hall this past summer. I had planned to spend at most 3 hours there, but ended up spending 5 and having to pull myself away, as I had to drive on to meet some folks in Buffalo that evening. As John said, it is a beautiful building in a beautiful location & well worth the time to visit. Why they choose to ignore progressive musicians, with the exceptions John mentioned, is beyond me. It reminds me quite a bit of the unspoken attitude of Rolling Stone magazine, which seems to view anything much beyond the mainstream as unimportant and underserving. Of course Rolling Stone has become a pup culture journal, or is that what it always was, and pop culture has just changed. Again, what a shame. One more thing: Thanks to the California Guitar Trio for a beautiful Christmas album! Mark Stansbery ------------------------------ Date: Tuesday, 1 Jan 2002 21:01:56 From: willm22 at yahoo dot com (Bill Messinger) Subject: the Red, White, and "Blue" notes In #924, there was a nice post about guitar patterns. This may be a good topic to explore here since it takes us beyond the not so well-distanced views on tonal subtlety and closer to the meat&potatoes area of linear composition. The foundation of all expression is essentially linear despite what the "colorists" say. Their zen band wagon, fuzzy-logic aesthetics may be popular with the coffee house crowd, but one still has to draw the line somewhere to truly create something. We certainly cannot take credit for what happens all by itself! The author of guitar patterns mentions a "compositional process that can be heard," which I take for a good example of a real thesis statement: something that draws the line, states the intention, and gives continuous support and guidance throughout the duration of a work. It starts to sound curiously close to a definition of discipline, doesn't it? Multiple guitar lines overlapping as they do along with certain additions and subtractions have a peculiar bond sometimes. There need not necessarily be an overture to announce their necessity, but there is always a linear common denominator to bind their variety. ------------------------------ Date: Wednesday, 2 Jan 2002 09:41:40 From: grzegorz dot hajduk at easynet dot pl (Grzegorz Hajduk) Subject: VROOOM structure I have the similar impression that VROOOM was comissed as "Larks' Toungues In Aspic 4". It has structure alike to "Part Three" with two themes and coda/cadenca, but the main body of the work has "Red" similarities: brief and consise opening/closing theme (but descending , not ascending like on "Red") which wraps these two main themes (on "Red" it's ABA, on "VROOOM" is's ABAB). Grzegorz Hajduk ------------------------------ Date: Wednesday, 02 Jan 2002 17:04:21 From: igor_zolotaryev at hotmail dot com (Igor Zolotaryev) Subject: New promising singer Gordon Haskell and others Hello, I thought I could share my joy with you. The Russian internet shop www.cdmusic.ru (an alleged trader of pirate cds) has put together a newspage where they try to keep the subscribers updated on the latest. On December 28 the newsletter mentioned someone named Williams had won the Christmas sales with his EP and the close runner up was "a young unknown singer Gordon Haskell whose EP had looked like winning the race". The letter went on to report that "specialists" predict a very bright future for young Gordon who'd written his masterpiece while shopping. I've loved the way the discussion goes in here: wherever KC tours, people moan about the prices for the tickets, cds, shirts, property, loud sound, RF playing from the dark, TG pants not too tight, Belew's voice or silence. Where there is no tour, people complain that they can't afford to travel so far to hear KC play, buy shirts, cds, check out the pants TG was wearing and the skirt someone else was. Then someone always mentions Brittney (who is this?) no matter what. Belew is a bad singer - Brittney. Bonzo is a bad drummer, my father used to say he'd fire him from his funeral band and my father was an experienced undertaker - Brittney! Tony Levin plays no bass, Fripp used to indicate the right guitar to him - listen to Brittney!!! You a musician? Yes, I am a musician. I play bambabazooba, an instrument I made myself based on Leonardo's lost drawings found in the Aztec grave right before Columbus came. Brittney is currently considering using it for the new album and tour. Fripp would not answer my mails but I think he's just envious. Before saying good bye and offering my best wishes for the New Year to everyone, let me mention a few artists who, I think, graced 2001 with great records and concerts. Keith Jarrett Trio two live records offer everything you want from music. Radiohead made a great record you can't possibly enjoy if your ears have had too much of the sonic garbage. Bob Geldof suddenly made his best, I think. Bob Dylan was generous enough to give a new album. I've never seen Coil mentioned here and though the nature of this music is very different from KC, I still think there'd be people who'll be enjoying it. I was at a Coil show and this was easily the most powerful experience musically and otherwise. You can find out more about Coil from www.brainwashed.com. I have a review of their gig on my webpage www.geocities.com/igor_zolotaryev. Yes, at first I was a bit apprehensive of paying $28 for a vinyl. But seeing this was INDEED a limited edition series - there were two left in the bin - I went ahead and forked it out. And at that time, I had asked him before buying the vinyl if it was out on CD, to which he replied, "No, not as of yet." But now that it IS out on CD, I went ahead and bought that as well. I still haven't listened to the Metamorphosis vinyl since I don't currently have a working turntable. As weird as it sounds, I still infrequently pay rare and/or used vinyl in the hopes of hearing them someday on a newly acquired turntable. ;) The additional 8 tracks, as stated by someother ET'er, were contributed by Ian McDonald. Btw, speaking of Ian, I got the Drivers Eyes CD a few days ago from Camino Records online. Most of the tracks seem very commercial and soft-pop 80's sounding, in fact very Foreigner-like, even the tracks WITHOUT Lou Gramm singing. But then the last track of the CD "Let There Be Light" (where the title sounds strangely similar to an old Pink Floyd track) reaks highly of King Crimson!!! :) It practically sounds like something from the ITCOTKC or Poseidon era, with a late 90s twist. I was a little disappointed at Michael Giles' contribution on "Demimonde", where the drumming isn't too inspiring and Giles is only singing back-up, not lead vox which I morely expected. Overall, a decent CD but one that I wouldn't listen to every day, but maybe on occasional weekend road trips. Btw, Ian doesn't have much a bad voice himself. Very relaxing, in fact. Look, Brittney tickets could >easily cost $50, so shouldn't Crimson tickets cost a LOT more given the >quality of the work, and given what was needed by the musicians to be >able to play it? (ie, years and years of practice) No, we definately are NOT doing the same thing at all. Your mexican friend was probably very poor and survives on the money, which is most likely bargained, that he gets off his talent for crafts. To suggest that buying a King Crimson concert ticket for 60 dollars is any where near the same thing is ridiculous. And your comparison between the quality of music between a Britney Spears ticket and a King Crimson ticket has nothing to do with concert tickets or cds. First of all, Britneys tickets should be double King Crimson tickets because she is a performer, not a musician, and she puts on a huge spectacular. She dances all night, with many dancers who she pays and tours with, with an enormous crew, with huge lighting and effects, and probably tours with some of the bigger teeny bopper acts in the world as well. I couldnt begin to speculate what a tour like hers would cost a day. KC on the other hand are musicians. they sit there and play their music. Now i am not knocking that, Ill pick a KC show over a britney spears show or most other shows any day, but ETers have been gettin on my case about "THE COST OF TOURING" and ticket prices, so if we really want to compare and britney spears tickets cost 50 dollars then KC tickets should by no mean cost even 40 dollars which seemed to be the cheapest ticket price on the tour. Ive seen some of the best bands i know for 8 dollars, and of course that has a lot to do with the fact that they arent nearly as big as KC and they play smaller venues. But Hey we might as well do this comparison: if these smaller but excellent bands are independant or dont get paid a lot and all need to survive shouldnt they charge a lot more so that they can profit off there shows while KC should charge modest prices since they arent in the same boat as the small bands? No, we cant say that because its illogical. that just goes to show we do not pay for concert tickets based on the qualilty of music we are seeing. If I could spend anything i wanted on concerts and things like that of my choice then hell Id shell out 100 bucks to see King Crimson because they are a band I care about supporting and i recognize the greatness of their music and their history, but that just isnt the case, and we dont pay for music based on its quality. I did indeed order my copies of the Sid Smith book through Helter Skelter, but apparently I placed my order just in the nick of time. The two hardcovers I received were both signed, though only by those I mentioned in my previous ET posting and certainly not by Mr. Fripp (not by Pete Sinfield, John Wetton, or David Cross, who evidently put in appearances at the official book signing party and signed a few copies there). I have heard from Sid Smith that at least one concert on the recent US tour was followed by an impromptu book signing, though he was not aware of whether Robert Fripp also participated in this. I wrote to the DGM Guestbook suggesting that it would be much appreciated if they would organize (and even charge a little money) for an additional bookplate, signed by all four members of the current band, which we hardcover owners -- or anybody else -- could add to our copies of the book... but there has been no response to that suggestion, unless that is the response. He also stated that he did NOT get a signed copy upon ordering from Helter Skelter. Well, I directly called Helter Skelter in London, and a gentleman answered the phone and told me that they have sold out of the limited edition of 500 autographed books for a few months. This despite the fact that there is STILL a link to the autographed series on the HS website. I had already bought and received a week ago the Crimson book, unsigned of course, but I had not even KNOWN at the time about an autographed series existing. Nonetheless, I would've STILL bought an autographed copy as well, and perhaps sold my recently acquired copy to a friend or somebody. (I like collecting autographs, even if I have to pay for them! ;) But as I must stress to everybody on the list, DO NOT TRY AND ORDER THE AUTOGRAPHED COPY ONLINE at Helter Skelter. All of the 500 signed copies are gone. If you do indeed order from that site, you will simply get an ordinary copy of the book. Still, don't let that deter you from getting it, since most publications in the world are usually unsigned anyway ;) It is a biography WELL WORTH GETTING and Sid Smith does an awesome job of writing and detailing the lifes and times of Fripp and the members past and present. One thing that the webmaster at Helter Skelter needs to do though, is remove the link to the signed series page. I'm sure this would be misleading to a lot of buyers out there, presuming they are buying an autographed copy of the book. So as recently as I found out (only early December) about this biography, I still would have been well too late to receive the signed version. Again, if you want to buy the regular unsigned book, just buy it thru www.artist-shop.com or thru DGM.
