Yeah, it was just a matter of time until it happened. In fact, I predicted it when the whole MS/wma/Bootleg TV fiasco started. While it's good to see that Bootleg TV is fucked (as in fuckedcompany.com), it's bad that people are going to find their music dead. I was able to get the concert re-encoded into a format that wasn't time limited, but I feel bad about the people who didn't. I'd find a way to a copy out into the world, but I'm stuck on dialup. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Oct 2001 11:23:23 EDT From: ChalkPie88 at aol dot com Subject: Heavy ConstruKction Howdy, I've been digging "Heavy ConstruKction" lately and have noticed something odd. Why in the world does Fripp use the "old DX-7 Rhodes" sound in the improv's and in "One Time"? He also uses a "fretless bass" sound that is equally as cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love this album and saw the live show twice in NYC, but I believe his choice if midi sounds was a little odd. Any comments or insight on this? Also, what is the deal with TCoL live shows available on CD and/or video? I would love to get a copy of the Town Hall Show in NYC, but haven't heard a thing regarding this. It even says in the "Heavy ConstruKction" booklet that most shows will be available. What's the deal? "So, this is a good way to get these discs without actually joining the club". Doesn't DGM sell these? Are we all so dense we're missing Fripp's point about bootlegging, and the artist not being compensated? Isn't this encouraging the same? I know, Michael bought them (I think) and should be able to sell them. But I don't understand the "I still personally prefer the official releases" comment... are these burned copies? Toby, are you going to start a classified section, so people can hawk their KC memorabilia? Personally, I'd be embarrassed trying to do it here, what with the very extensive exposure on "artists rights" by RF, which I thought most agreed with. A personal friend, Pierce Turner (who was tied in with Phillip Glass briefly) hates this kind of thing... whenever he hears about someone selling their own, or copying, a release of his, his question is always "Why didn't you want them to buy it new so I'd make a buck?" (as Pierce is an artist with a small following). Again, and I'm not sure, but this seems a little unorthodox on ET. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Oct 2001 22:50:01 -0700 (PDT) From: vigor mortis Subject: New John Paul Jones album John Paul Jones' new album, _The Thunderthief_, "should be out some time in January", according to . Trey Gunn mentions in his diary's Sept 27 entry that JPJ's band will be touring the US with KC, starting November in Nashville; this is echoed by the News page on DGM's site. Recently, i bought _The ProjeKcts_, and had a hard time deciding whether i should listen to them in order of conception or inception. I picked the latter first. I think it put the ProjeKcts in a more "legible" perspective. Also, listening to _Live At The Jazz Cafe_ by ordering the track titles numerically proved interesting as well. rone -- "The ministry of communication is duty-bound to make the use of the Internet impossible." - Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 19:57:53 -0500 From: "MIKE REED" Subject: Complexity After listening to the latest CC#17 I have to ask myself, is KC evolving into more flair than substance? KC continues to demonstrate that technically they can do anything, but it seems to be at the expense of the music itself. I continue to appreciate the skill that KC demonstrates, but just because something can be done doesn't necessarily mean that it should be done. I guess this came to a head after listening to Amor Belhom Duo's Wavelab CD (Carrot Top Records - highly recommended). They appear to have chosen a similar musical direction as KC but haven't lost the sense of the song. It may be that I'm just getting old (no, I AM old). Technical flash and style can be impressive, but the beauty of music drives toward simplicity, not complexity. The recent recordings and tours have been interesting projects for KC - but I look forward to further progress - to a simplicity that Mr. Fripp and KC have the talent and ability to achieve. Still, committed to KC for today and tomorrow..... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 02:47:56 +0000 From: larkstongues at att dot net Subject: EG Records Just wondering if anyone out there has a listing of the albums released on EG Records. I've been able to figure out most of them but I do have some gaps (EGLP3 for example). I'm interested in both the EGLP releases (Crimson, Roxy Music, etc.) and EGED (I believe that's what it was called) (Fripp/Eno, Harold Budd, etc.). Private replies are fine, unless you think there's a larger audience for this. I do believe they take note. I have seen, and greatly support, postings for Frippertronics, Soundscapes, P1, and P3 shows. I know I'm getting tired of the 80's stuff already (although I LOVE Absent Lovers). Other than TCOL shows (and where are they), I kind of don't know what other kind of Crim stuff I would like to see. I really enjoy the Boz/Ian/Mel stuff 'cause it hasn't been done to death. Are there any really good quality '69 shows anywhere that may turn up? Not that they'd get released anyway... I think they should have a pre-order/pre-pay with a batch of TCOL shows. Like a 5 disc box, like Epitaph, of the best shows. A limited, one time pressing for the pre-pays only. No fancy packaging or anything, just the tunes. Oh well, I think too much. DGM and the Club have given me/us a ton of great stuff. I'll keep enjoying what they're giving. Thanks for the time... The composer's name escapes me at the moment. I just know it wasn't Wendy Carlos. But here's a bit of minutia that gave me a giggle: on a fairly amusing comedy on FoxTv called Malcom In the Middle, two Dads were male bonding over their record collections. Malcom's father is heard to exclaim with glee when he finds his new friend has a King Crimsom album. Kinda of cool to hear my favorite band mentioned on a network TV show. Doesn't take much to make me happy, oviously. I'm sorry for YES because it was a great band, and I'm happy for Krimson because they are living the real wolrd and creating new forms of music, good luck to everyone ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #877 ********************************
