He expects moshing (just as you describe it), hears teen females screeching, and believes THAT's what "moshing" is. The band has never covered this song. You were thinking of their original tune "21st Century Digital Boy", which bears absolutely no resemblance to the original King Crimson song musically. I think at the end of the song the lead singer sung to the new tune some of hte Schizoid lyrics, and they're credited in the album but it is not the same song at all. I will offer this one piece-- many jazz fans, myself included, think that no only was Ken Burns' Jazz rather limited in what it covered, but also that it would not necessarily appeal to people who are not fans of jazz.>> Mike recently criticized Ken Burn's piece on jazz and I have to concur. It was every bit as poor as his history of baseball. Not only did he virtually leave out essentials like Coleman but totally ignore people like Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy and the like. Their's is a style that Crimson fans would likely be interested in (see Keith Tippett). It is a very good chronicle but it does leave out key influences from the last 30 - 40 years in various sub-generes. Ornette Coleman and Charlie Parker are good examples as well as McCoy Tyner and Scott Henderson. Can I hope for someday when KC will actually be in South America? It is completely frustrating to realize that there's almost no possibility to see the band in SA. I guess there are two points that should be covered in a reply concerning the absence of SA tour plans: (i) What (ii) Why (i) What King Crimson is not going to play in SA this year. Never did, nothing tells me it will. This is quite clear, and really should be oficialized ("Before we move from A to B, better to know we're at A."). (ii) Why Why KC does not play SA? Nobody was ever capable of answering this. Is it related to the band, to the promoters? When I knew Mr. Fripp himself would step in to discuss this, I imagined he would provide us a "reason why", more than the obvious "what will happen". The most important point (reason why) wasn't covered in this post. If we knew the reason, we could work to make the false news true. I took some notes about the cd and I give you now my personal impressions about it. Let's say first that I consider the album "In the Court of the Crimson King" as the best one ever made (followed by "McDonald & Giles") and "The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp" as one of the worst! Except "Erudite Eyes", "Suite in C", "Under the Sky" and perhaps "She is Loaded", everything on that cd is, in my opinion, scrap. So, I was a bit suspicious and very curious to hear "Metephormosis". What a surprise! Even it has not the quality of "In the Court", what an evolution since "The Cheerful Insanity"! We can see that the arrival of McDonald, Sinfield and Judy Dible has changed a lot of things. If you like the first period of KC, I'm sure you would enjoy the lp very much. Short personnal appreciation of each track: - "Hypocrite": is in the style of "The Cheerful Insanity", but is not too bad. - "Newly Weds": nothing new in comparaison with "The Cheerful Insanity". So, let's forget it! - "Erudite Eyes": even I prefer the version on "The Cheerful Insanity", this one is very interesting because it announces some improv and variations made by the first incarnation of KC and some passages of McDonald & Giles. - "Tremolo Studies": an interesting "classical" guitar solo by Fripp in the line of "Suite in C". - "Scrivens": an instrumental piece. Jazzy. Not too bad. - "Make It Today(1)": Interesting, I like it very much. Same remarks as for "Erudite Eyes". - "Digging My Lawn": a far better version than the one which appears on "The Cheerful Insanity" because of the flute (probably by McDonald even if he is not credited for it) . - "I Talk to the Wind" (vocals by McDonald and Mike Giles), I prefer the version song by Judy Dible on "the young person's guide to KC" for the vocals, but this one for the instrumentation. But the best versions of that song are on "In the Court" and on "The Tokyo Tapes" (by Steve Hackett with Wetton and McDonald). - "Murder": very interesting song and good vocals by Dibble (lead vocals) and by Peter and Mike Giles and McDonald (who plays also flute). - "Make It Today (2)": version song by Dible. I prefer the other version. - "Wonderland": surely not the best song composed by Fripp! Tthe first part of the song has soundeds to me as music in a Walt Disney film! After, it's more jazzy, better, but not really good in my opinion. - "She's Loaded": nothing new in comparaison with "The Cheerful Insanity". - "Why Don't You Just Drop In": that's the first version of "Drop In" played live by the first incarnation of KC (on "Epitaph", between others). This song will become the superb "The Letters" on "Islands". This version, with McDonald on piano and not on sax, is faster and softer than the one played by KC. Very interesting to see how a song can evoluate. Some vocals recall McDonald & Giles ("Birdman") and "The Trees" by KC. Very good guitars from Fripp. I give you now some information about the lp, mainly taken from Crimson News (19 June 2001): SIDE ONE: 1. Hypocrite (Peter Giles) w/. Al Kirtley : Piano 2. Newly Weds (Peter Giles) 3. Erudite Eyes (Robert Fripp) w/. Ian McDonald : Flute 4. Tremolo Study in A Major from the Spanish Suite Robert Fripp : solo Guitar 5. Scrivens (Peter Giles) w/. Ian McDonald : Flute/Sax/Piano 6. Make It Today (1) (Ian McDonald/Peter Sinfield) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo/Flute/Sax 7. Digging My Lawn (Peter Giles) (Flute probably by Ian McDonald, but not credited on the cd) SIDE TWO: 8. I Talk to the Wind (Ian McDonald/Peter Sinfield) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo/Flute/Clarinet 9. Murder (Peter Giles) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo/Flute w/. Judy Dyble : Vo 10. Make It Today (2) (Ian McDonald/Peter Sinfield) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo/Flute/Sax w/. Judy Dyble : Vo 11. Wonderland (Robert Fripp) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo 12. She's Loaded (Peter Giles) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo 13. Why Don't You Just Drop in? (Robert Fripp) w/. Ian McDonald : Vo/Piano All the recordings were made in 1968, except the first song, in 1967. I hope you'll enjoy that lp if you have the occasion to listen to it. Well, the night of the 19th they did just 2 but something happen that I guess will be unforgetable for the ones who attended this particul show: An incredible performance of "Three of a Perfect Pair" by Belew and his acoustic guitar! A perfecKt concert. 90 minutes of pure heaven. > Met ETers before the show in the Progrestaurant a couple of minutes > away: Crimson on the video, Prog Menu, Prog everywhere. Yes! This place really exists. See you next tour. We had FOUR encores; we made Fripp smile wide and wild! Venue: Teatro Metropolitan, Mexico City Sunday August 19, 2001 Date: Prices in USD $55, $42, $35, $22 and $16 100% full! Friday was around 98% and Saturday around 95% THE SETLIST (I made it during the show and it was verified with the setlist provided by a crew member, that setlist had only two encores, not four!) ConstruKction Larks Tongues IV encore Deception of the Thrush Thela Hun Ginjeet A few notes. I felt that the new tunes were all much stronger and more developed than in Nashville. I really enjoyed Level 5 and Cyriel. I am naming these new tunes by memory and I had the actual setlists to go by in Nashville so I may be mistaken this time around. The last new tune was hard for me to place. I don't believe it was Crimson Blue or Reponse to Stimuli (which Adrian sometimes repeats the title), so I am guessing ConstruKction. ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #870 ********************************
