I hope you're not a greengrocer, Scott, because you seem to have your apples and pears mixed up. You were doing well until those last two sentences. The version of ITttW you're thinking of was "Flight of the Ibis," which actually uses the original music for that song according to the notes in the "McDonald and Giles" LP from whence it came. I guess I've also just answered your last question. Sinfield does contribute to this album, though; lyrics for the track "Birdman." A wonderful thing, the human memory. ;-) Jim Bailey ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 23:32:52 +0200 From: ClausJ dot Lienau at t-online dot de (Claus J. I just read in the latest issue of german music(ian) magazine >Soundcheck< (8/2001), which features an interview with Peter Schwalm about his cooperation with Brian Eno. Besides many other items he is talking about live gigs in the USA to come. He also mentions - and this maybe is the most delicate topic of this interview - a trio project with himself, Brian Eno and ... Mr. Robert Fripp (!) someday in one of the next weeks. That gave me a shower of pleasant surprise. Iim sorry I donit have any further information about that thing. Letis hope Mr. Fripp is aware of that appointment and that it may result in a piece of musical work, that we will have the pleasure to make acquaintance with one (possibly soon) day... TIMOTHY GUEGUEN wrote: "Anyone else suspect the acoustic guitar on "Epitath" is actually Greg Lake and not Fripp? To my ears it sounds more like the tone Lake would later get with ELP than Fripp's very rare forays into acoustic on KC records, as does what is actually played." Though I don't know for sure the true answer to Tomothy's question, I would remind him that there is acoustic guitar on In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard, and Islands, so my guess would be that its Fripp playing acoustic rather than Lake since its pretty obviously him on the other early albums recorded without Lake.... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 01:24:38 -0700 From: "kevin" Subject: Fripp and Hendrix How would Fripp and Hendrix together sound? Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 21:46:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Teofilus Kierto Subject: Giles/Muir/Cunningham "Ghost Dance" by Michael Giles, Jamie Muir & David Cunningham is an improvisational and experimental album compiled from recordings the trio made in 1983 for a Ken McMullen film. At times it veers close to Brian Eno type ambient music with lots of added percussion, but most of the time the 15 "songs" on the album sound surprisingly fresh and original with no obvious reference points. What's more, I think the music transcends its cinematic purposes and stands very well on its own - something that doesn't happen too often with film soundtracks. The Crimson moment of the record is undoubtedly the short thumb piano sketch that sounds a lot like its counterpart on Larks' Tongues in Aspic, part 1. The CD was released on Piano label in 1995 and it was only then the material was compiled for commercial release by Michael Giles and David Cunningham. This may in part explain why it doesn't exactly sound like a film soundtrack at all. This is how the liner notes describe the album: "In 1983 as we began to work as a trio, Ken McMullen commissioned us to provide the music for his film 'Ghost Dance'. The film was made in a very improvisational way, exploring the collision between ethnic cultures and western cities - the rich inner mythologies of the one and the alienation of the other - and the philosophies that were beginning to explore this odd melee and what it reveals about us." "We approached the music in the same way, but more instinctively than intellectually, as it is the nature of music. We produced bits and pieces of improvised music mostly using very simple non-tec instruments, hand drums, kazoo, thumb piano, bells, voice, found things, very simply constructed things and so on, which was then molested with technology till it was thoroughly macerated into some other hybrid shape. We would then take this as the basic material and try to make sense of it and develop it within the context of the film." Musician credits read as follows: Michael Giles: kit drums, assorted percussion, mouth horns, mouth reeds, bow, voice, keyboard Jamie Muir: assorted percussion, hand drums, bow, thumb piano, mouthpiece, conch David Cunningham: loops treatments, guitars, occasional percussion As for David Cunningham, he has worked mainly on the fringes of popular music - the best known and the most accessible of his projects so far has undoubtedly been the Slapp Happy-ish minimalistic avant-pop outfit Flying Lizards who released two LP's and a handful of singles on Virgin late 70's/early 80's. I recall Robert Fripp guested on the second of these albums, "The Fourth Wall" (title subject to memory failure), which is probably the better of the two although the eponymous first one has its moments as well. Cunningham has released music under his own name, too, but as I have heard only bits and pieces of it I refrain from further comments, except for the excellent "Greaves, Cunningham" album (1991) made in collaboration with John Greaves (ex-Henry Cow/National Health). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 17:51:26 -0300 From: Deep Groove Subject: Re: Giles / Muir / Cunningham : Ghost Dance the record was recorded between 3-6 may 1983 and released by PIANO 502 in 1995. David Cunningham is an avant garde guitar player ala DAVID TORN with abundant use of loop and guitar treatments. The record has 15 percussion oriented tracks. A good one for lovers of modern concrete music, the percussive one of John Cage or Edgar Varese. Special mention deserves track 5 'Screenwash', sound like the 'traffic songs' of KC 80's era. from the liner notes of the cd: ' in 1983 as we began to work as a trio, ken mcmullen commissioned us to provide the music for his film 'ghost dance'. the film was made in a very improvisional way, exploring the collision between ethnic cultures and western cities - the rich inner mythologies of the one and the alienation of the other - and the philosophies that were beginning to explore this odd melee and what it reveals about us.' hope this help someone to enjoy the record as i. armani groove argentina. ********************************* * ============================= * * + Deep Groove Record Store + * * + groove at sinectis dot com dot ar + * * ============================= * ********************************* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 22:12:20 From: "Donovan Mayne-Nicholls" Subject: ladies of the road The news page at DGM says the forthcoming Denver 71 club release is the best live recording ever by the Boz line-up, so why isn't made for general release. Fripp has been announcing a Ladies of the Road archival set for ages (as early as 1998, that is), yet at the last minute the set gets cancelled agaain, which is what has just happened. The mention to "work has started on LOTR" was withdrawn from the page and replaced by info on this new KCCC release. Is it that Fripp really hates that period? Or is it that some of the other members are pulling the plug on it?
