According to its sleeve, the CD was recorded on Jan.12, 1980 at London Hammersmith Odeon. This information might be incorrect. The CD sounds like a radio broadcast - superb sound quality. In the middle of the show Debbie introduced a "special guest Robert Fripp". I am not at home now, so cannot tell you exactly on what tracks he was playing. Best, Alex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 19:23:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Darryl Subject: Hackett/Tool & Radiohead/"Still" Hello folks, it's been a while... 1) Speaking of Mr. Hackett, I remember reading a quote on a Genesis website where one of the members said (regarding Steve joining the band), something along the lines of: "Well, if we can't have Fripp at least we got the next best thing..." So in that sense a "reunion" of '69 Crim wouldn't seem that odd with Hackett. BTW, who on this list owns or has heard of the band Hackett was in before Genesis? I can't remember their name, but he was on at least one album called "The Road" released in 1970 I think. 2) The new Tool album is amazing, and anyone who doesn't think so just isn't listening hard enough. (Remember, "Lateralus" is like a lot of KC in that you have to listen to it a million times before it starts sinking in). I still haven't heard the "Opiate" EP or "Aenima" yet, although I've heard songs from both. I purchased "Undertow" when it was still new back in high-school, and it was one of my favourite albums at the time. Even that album doesn't sound like cliched heavy-metal compared to everything else that was coming out at the time. But "Lateralus" is definately not like a lot of metal that's out now. I can hear influences from Zeppelin and Sabbath, Floyd and Crimson, as well as Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails. A great album if you give it a try. Another album that just came out which would be of interest to ETers is the new Radiohead, "Amnesiac". IMO, it's even better and more experimental than last year's "Kid A". Apart from maybe one or two songs, the whole album has 'NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL' written all over it. Radiohead are very lucky to be popular enough that their record company will allow them to release such un-mainstream music. 3) Speaking of Sinfield's "Still" album, I've never heard it yet. Can anyone recommend it? I know there's KC alumni on it as well as other guest appearances, but is Sinfield actually on it? Does he play any instruments or anything? Darryl ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 01:32:11 From: "Dale Hoyt" Subject: re Blondie and Fripp: re Blondie and Fripp: I came in the middle of this so excuse redundancies: Fripp plays classic Fripp on "Fade Away and Radiate" on Blondie's Parallel Lines Album. Debbie Harry also recorded a version of Donna Summer's song "I Feel Love' that was a dj special release(never heard it). Also of note Chris Stein, Blondie guitarist, produced a single of "Houndog" for avant gardist Walter Stedding with Fripp on Guitar. Then there was the time when Debbie introduced Fripp demonstrating "Fripptronics" on the "Midnight Special" TV show in the late seventies. Those guys really get around. Dale ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 21:35:47 -0500 From: "Doug Abrell" Subject: music resembling KC Not long ago there was discussion on music that had a Crimson-ish quality, or that KC may have inspired. Tool and Primus were suggested as two possible examples, but no one mentioned Rollins Band, circa '87-'92. Black Flag were the soundtrack of my youth, but I always thought Henry assembled a much better band after he left them. They seemed to have little musical connection to amateur punk-rock patterns, or to '80's hair-metal (characterized by the straight, driving bassline and rhythmically boring). In this band were angular guitar riffs (courtesy of the under-rated Chris Haskett) and playful drum-and bass tricks. They got better with each consecutive record they released, often with live takes of previously released songs that showed developments and innovations on the originals, not to mention the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants playing style that a band of their genre can seldom pull off. For example, on the first post-Black Flag record, they do a short version of the Velvet Underground's "Move Right In". On the next record, "Life Time", among other live takes, there's a smoking 9-minute version of "Move Right In". And then on the next record, "Hard Volume", there's a completely mind-blowing 28-minute version of "Move Right In" that has me convinced there was no other band like this one. I'm not saying that song length equals genius, but when you have the telepathy and dexterity to pull it off without meandering, you are way above average. So, I always thought that this group reflected the '72-'74 incarnation of Crimson (primarily on the bass/drums interplay), and when I heard Simeon Cain and Andrew Weiss say in an interview that they grew up together, learning to play while looking at the Bruford/Wetton style, my suspicion was confirmed. This is most evident on the '91 release, "The End of Silence". I would recommend this record to anybody. Subsequent records (starting with '94's "Weight") are missing Andrew Weiss, and are also missing the magic ingredient that causes it to resemble Crimson. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 22:51:45 EDT From: JasJohns22 at aol dot com Subject: Re: Blondie I recall many moons ago being at a videotaping of 'Blondie' in NYC where I observed RF in the audience. Apparently I was the only person who recognized him, as he moved through the crowd unmolested. The performance was fairly dull, as the band lip-synched to several bouncy tunes. I was quite surprised to see him there, obviously enjoying himself...but couldn't really summon the nerve to inquire...and merely exchanged hellos. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 22:32:27 -0600 From: "Luna Negra, S.C." Take, for example, the two 1982 recordings released so far. CLUB4 gets 4 stars from DGM, whereas the current CLUB16 is deemed worthy of 4,5. To me this means that the Berkeley recording is sonically better of the two - which it isn't (and the members' audio rating seem to confirm my view). I find this somewhat annoying as it makes it almost impossible to use the DGM audio rating as a guide when deciding which club release might be worth having. Is the DGM team possibly doing what we listeners are not allowed to do, ie. judging also the merits of the performance or musicianship when rating the releases? There are, of course, other inconsistencies between DGM's and club members' audio ratings well worth of discussing, but this to me seems to be the most glaring one. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 08:32:07 -0400 From: "James J. Jim Hannigan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 22:46:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Teofilus Kierto Subject: Still Is it any good, Peter Sinfield's Still? Somebody already said yes, so just for the sake of conversation (not to mention balance) here's the opposite view. I readily admit that I haven't bothered to listen to "Still" since say 1983, but for some curious reason I do have quite vivid memories of it. I'd say there's about one and a half decent songs on it, the best being the opener "The Song of the Sea Goat" (I hope I do recall the title correctly), but then again, it is based on a melody lifted from a Vivaldi mandolin concerto, so there's an explanation why this one song sticks out of the rest. The other track worth a mention is the one song that is partially sung by Greg Lake (the last number on the record, I recall), mostly because it's a relief to hear some decent singing after forty minutes of Sinfield. Mind you, he's not much of a singer. I don't remember him being put forward as a candidate for the singer's post in King Crimson even during the most feverish pre-Boz must-find-singer period of the band. That does tell something about the man's vocal abilities, doesn't it. It's not nice to say nasty things about a record that somebody seems to like a lot, but as for those that have never heard "Still" and consider spending money on it, I thought a second opinion might be of help. To put it as nicely as possible, it is not an essential album, even though it is Crimson-related. It is not an exciting album. I think anyone who has lived without it this far, can carry on living without it. (Maybe I should give it another chance... Many people say they've been huge crimheads, and upon hearing that Fripp's Guitar Craft brought the California Guitar Trio together, started listening to the CGT. I worked that equation backwards. A friend of mine was looking for a version of Classical Gas, and stumbled across the CGT's version, and was floored. I heard weeks of "Check these guys out!!" so I did. And I was, as well, floored. CGT is incredible, and if any of you have yet to check them out, I suggest you do so. Also, they're currently on tour. I got the chance to see them at Bluesfest in Ottawa, and the show was phenomenal. But I digress, I started checking out tons of CGT stuff, and some history on the band. Their website stated that they were brought together by the Guitar Craft teachings of one Robert Fripp of King Crimson. Now, being a guitar enthusiast, Fripp's name instantly rang a bell (frippertronics and whatnot) but Crimson's did not register. So, I put that thought in the back of my mind, and went on with everyday life - until I broke out an old issue of Guitar World which contained the 100 greatest guitar solos of all time, as voted n by the fans. My biggest guitar inspiration - Jimi Hendrix - was listed in the top 25 three times, so I hadn't really bothered to read the rest of the list (it had been 2 years since I picked the issue up). So I decided to check it out, and lo and behold, number 82: Robert Fripp for King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man". I immediately put down the mag and fired up Napster. I was blown away by the talent of the band. As for how much I liked the music? I wasn't sure. "Schizoid" was an incredible song, but it left me thinking that the sound of the band could be one of three things when I downloaded my next song: 1) Noise, 2) Experimental and amazing (as Schizoid was) or 3) not that great, and kind of plain, with Schizoid being the only bright spot in the band's career. Luckily, "Epitaph" and "Court of the Crimson King" sealed it: number 2: experimental and amazing. Within a week, I had compiled an 80-minute list of Crimson material. It included all of the Old School Crimso: Court of the Crimson King, Wake of Poseidon, Easy Money, LTIA, pt. 1 - a lot of classics. Then I started looking into more Modern Crim: VROOOM, VROOOM VROOOM, Three of a Perfect Pair, Matte Kudesai, LTIA, pts. 3 and 4, and others. I was hooked on Crimso completely after about a month. I had milked Napster for almost all it was worth for Crimson Material - did you know that Crimson was one of the last bands to be filtered on napster? I took advantage of that. But, as per usual, my need for autheticity took over - and so came the purchase of the 30th Anniversary Remaster of In The Court of the Crimson King. That purchase was followed up with the buying of LTIA - but Jewel Cased (I was unaware of the gatefold covers) - So Red and Starless and Bible Black were both bought in Gatefold version - as was Discipline. Of all the Crim I've heard thus far, I think I rank S&BB at the top of the list (LTIA and Discipline are CLOSE seconds). It combines everything that's good about Crimson - Rock : Great Deceiver and Lament. Ballad : The Night Watch. And, of course, Instrumental: the instrumental passages contained on S&BB are some of the best in the Crim repertoire - right up there with the LTIA set. "Fracture" is always a joy to listen to, "We'll Let You Know"almost borders on Funk. "Trio" is a great tune - reminscent of work done on Islands. The only low point on the album is the Mincer - not sure what that song is, really. It sounds like a stage jam with some lyrics thrown in last second. But the title track more than makes up for it. I got a lot of listening out of S&BB, as I did Red and LTIA - I love the 1973-1974 Crimso - especially the very first incarnation of the band. When LTIA's booklet featured live photos of that version of the band, I thought it was one of the best stage setups I had ever seen. Seeing 2 drummers - especially wityh Jamie Muir's wall of gongs, metal sheets and chains - this band looks SO powerful. Plus, Muir adds that little extra to the music, and he's noticably missing on S&BB - though Bruford does an amazing job of filling the void, it;s just not the same. As Bruford said in an interview published with the reissue of Red: "Impossible that it[the band] would last, so therefore it would be great." And it was. I've also been listening to Discipline alot lately - I love that one - can anyone suggest a next buy? I'm thinking either Three of a Perfect Pair (mainly due to the bonus tracks) or Lizard (despite Lizard's gatefold being discontinued... grrrr...) So yeah, now Crimson is my current musical obsession. I have also ventured into the realm of Live Crimson - and yes, the live version of Cirkus was one of the first I went for. I think I have the Jacksonville version, thoguh. Whichever ends with "..if you rush to your friendly neighbourhood record store and beat the owner about the head with a club, he'll sell you one" (referring to Islands) as Boz was intro-ing "Ladies of the Road" is the one I have. Also, there's a song I need identified. Whoever posted it hafd it listed as "The Great Deceiver" - well it wasn't. It's lyrics mention "I am the driver of an underground train" frequently. It's nothing that I've heard on any Crimson album... any idea what it is? Well that's it for now. take care, all... Hey-ho, Darin ps - anyone ever imagined what a team-up between Jimi Hendrix and Robert Fripp would sound like? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 19:53:46 +0200 From: Julien Perriard Subject: Two grooves on a CD? Other CDs that come to mind who share this "abnormality": - ep7 by Autechre (electro) - Guerrilla and Out Spaced, both by Super Furry Animals (Welsh band) - Les Creatures by Katerine (French singer) Back in the "old days", lots of CD-ROM portions of CDs were stored in the seconds before the first track (sorry, no example!). ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 21:06:00 -0400 From: "Tom X. Chao" Subject: Fripp's Blondie appearance The live Blondie performance of "Heroes" featuring Robert Fripp on guitar is included on Blondie's "Blonde and Beyond" compilation of rareties, etc. (Chyrsalis 1993) "Heroes" is the final track and, at the end, Deborah Harry thanks Robert Fripp. According to the liner notes, the track was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon, January 12, 1980. I had forgotten this until recently when I was trying to compile as many versions of "Heroes' as possible. By the way, didn't anybody on this list go see Bruford when he just toured? I saw 2 shows in NYC and they were great. The first time I clicked on the link it crashed Netscape. The second time the site loaded, but I found no pictures. Anyone else suspect the acoustic guitar on "Epitath" is actually Greg Lake and not Fripp? To my ears it sounds more like the tone Lake would later get with ELP than Fripp's very rare forays into acoustic on KC records, as does what is actually played. tim gueguen 101867 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 14:07:02 +0200 From: "DI MARTINO" Subject: Mike Giles Has anyone news from the greatest K.C. drummer M.Giles ? bruno di martino brdimar at tin dot it ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #859 ********************************
