I was in the happy position of seeing them live on Saturday evening down in Edinburgh. Though I like the new CD a lot, everything works *much* better live, especially Dave Brady's singing which can be a bit of an acquired taste on CD but just absolutely *works* live. The saw went down very well indeed, and Su-a was giving anyone who wanted a chance to try it in the interval (I could get a note out of it quite easily, but seeing where to bow the next one if I'd changed pitch wasn't something I really grokked in my 1 minute lesson). Very good gig, anyone having a chance to see them should. As well as Matte Kudasai and Sheltering Sky I've seen them do Discipline, though they cover such a wide range of styles and genres there should be something for just anyone, KC fan or not, at one of their shows. > Today I played Sheltering Sky on my radio show and had > a woman walk in saying she recognized the song but couldn't place it. I do a radio programme on community station CKLN-FM here in Toronto on Sunday nights from 23:30 - 02:00 (Eastern time for N. A.). The main focus is on modern orchestral/chamber, electronic, and improvised music, with occasional forays into more "mainstream" forms. This Sunday will be one of those occasions. I am planning to play the entire "Drive to 1981" from the original vinyl - for those who may be unfamiliar it comprised the second Peter Gabriel album, Daryl Hall's "Sacred Songs," and Fripp's "Exposure." My plan is to intersperse the tracks to form a relatively seamless whole, rather than play each LP in sequence. So far it has only been worked out on paper, so I'm hoping there aren't many jarring transitions. How can you hear it? Well, if you live in the Toronto area, set your FM tuner to 88.1 (the first station on the band). Outside of the broadcast area we can be found at: http://ckln.sac.ryerson.ca and go to "Listen Live." With luck our streaming audio host won't crap out. With even more luck, the next edition of ET containing this post will appear before Sunday. At the moment, the programme has two different names, according to what type of material is being played ("Electric Storm" for all electronic music, "A Missing Sense" if there's acoustic material), but I'm considering adding a third for those times when I feel like delving into "prog" and related fields - perhaps "Earthbound" would be a good name. Best wishes to all, and I hope you can tune in. Jim Bailey ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 12:46:09 -0500 From: "Esteban_Gomez_Maqueo_A." Does anybody >know what date/show it was from? Maybe it's a KCCC release now. It's a particularly elegantly packaged bootleg, as someone else has mentioned. It's the same show that's on the legitimately released 'Three of a Perfect Pair - Live in Japan' VHS release from DGM, but my guess is that the source was the MTV broadcast, since it's abbrieviated in exactly the same way that the TV broadcast was. Sound is very good, but not exceptional - you're much better served with the legit release 'Absent Lovers.' Great package, though. As I was reading the latest ET, I happened to be listening to one of his CD's, and as I enjoy it very much (in a mellow mood)I thought I'd share the info. if anyone also likes classical guitar, this is definitely worth a listen: "A Midsummer Nights Dream" with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, released in 1997. Lovely guitar, beautiful music. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 18:15:54 -0400 From: take5 at rcn dot com Subject: Christina Ricci, the "Moonchild" I rented this odd film entitled "Buffalo 66" the other day. Interesting film about two messed up folks, one of which is portrayed by Christina Ricci (I believe she was the little girl in Addam's Family). There's this one scene in a bowling alley where the room goes dark, a spotlight shines on her, and she proceeds to tap dance to "Moonchild," performed by our favorite band. The contrast was quite interesting, definitely one of the best moments of the movie. For all of the Yes fans out there, the climax scene at the end uses that cool fast riff part from "Heart of the Sunrise." Also, "Sweetness" (old school Yes, from the very first album) is played during the end credits. It's the first time I've ever scene progressive rock music used as the primary source for a movie score. Featuring two 'Flowermouth'-era contributions apiece from Robert Fripp and Mel Collins, 'Lost Songs: Volume One' is a 14 track, 60 minute CDR collection of previously unreleased No-Man material dating from 1991-97 (Porcupine Tree's Colin Edwin and Gong's Theo Travis also appear). The dance remix track, 'Hard Shoulder', is particularly interesting because it's based around Robert's initial approach to the piece 'Soft Shoulders' (a 'Discipline' style pair of interlocking guitar parts) which due to its obvious debt to early 80's KC, the band didn't feel was appropriate to use at the time. ---- http://come.to/no-man http://www.no-man.co.uk http://www.burningshed.com http://www.30ton.com.pl/wizytowka/noman ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 21:08:27 -0000 From: "Danny Anderson" Subject: GG&F Re-Release Since there is going to be only 1,000 copies of the GG&F reissue and I don't have the bucks to spring for it, is there anybody out there who is willing to make a tape and work out a trade of some item with me? Dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 17:38:07 -0400 From: mike Subject: Re: Ticketmaster & KC Just another word on Goodman's post, which Parrott responded to: I lived in Seattle for about 6 years, just after the Pearl Jam flak. Pearl Jam wound up do a free concert at park! It seems 90% of the larger and/or established venues MUST sell their tickets through Ticketmaster. They are contractually obliged. The other few larger arenas remaining are in the hands of another conglomerate (whose name escapes me). Even if, as Parrott said, KC booked the venue for the eve, the tickets would HAVE TO BE distributed via Ticketmaster. Pearl Jam learned the hard way, after fighting them - and losing - in court. In the local Seattle paper "The Stranger", they went in depth explaing all this after Pearl Jam failed in court. Even here in NYC, when, for example, the Jacob Javitis Center has a FREE thing going on, the tickets go through Ticketmaster and the little guy gets slapped with their surcharge. They're Nazis and that's why everyone hates them. Unfortunately, if KC or others choose almost ANY venue with a decent capacity, they must go through Hitler's gang. Ticketmaster could care less about anyone complaining... they know they've got almost all indoor (and most outdoor) arenas locked solid. I can't comment for sure about the second tour... only that POSSIBLY you're thinking of a couple of different concerts. Fripp did play theq first, I know (being there) and was introduced as Dusty Rhodes, seated behind the right front curtain. Also on guitar that night was Steve Hunter, and the final encore was "Back In NYC", with Gabriel wearing a black motorcycle leather. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 23:59:01 +0100 From: Nigel Slater Subject: Gordon Haskell new album and revised web site Hi, Gordon Haskell is about to release a new album "Look Out". I've gotten really good seats to many shows via Ticketmaster, especially since they've utilized online ticket purchase. Before them, you had to camp out for 3 days to get good tickets, or pay scalpers 10 times the stub price. They may hold a monopoly, they may add additional $5-10 a ticket, but I;m willing to pay that if it gets me better tickets and service. Just my observations. I'm sure there are plenty of horror stories as well. However, I know it was much easier to get KC tickets for Atlanta than having to call the box office. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 09:57:34 -0500 From: "Phil Ciskowski" Subject: GIG REVIEW: Nashville 6/16/01 I have several impressions after the show. The first one was heat. The band was hot, figurative and literally. The room was an oven. Before the show even started my wife became so hot that she went to the bar to get some water and began to get dizzy and almost blacked out. Someone asked her if she needed help, got her a chair, and gave her a bottle of water. When my wife started feeling better she realized that it was Patricia Fripp who had helped her. This just backed up my initial impression of her as a truly kind, caring, and considerate person. Her performance as the opening act was fabulous! I didn't get the chance to thank her for assisting my wife. And where was my wife's caring and considerate husband while all that was going on? Guarding our space directly in front of Robert Fripp's section of the stage. I have my priorities! We couldn't have been any closer unless we had actually been on stage. It has taken me twenty years and numerous near misses to see them live, but the close proximity to the band definitely made it worth the wait. The playing seemed better when compared to the live CD from the European tour. Part of this is probably just having played the material longer. I think some of it is Pat's drum setup as well. He now has real cymbals and a real snare drum (I think). I am all for new technology, but I thought the all V-Drum kit was too much of a good thing and needed some real instruments as well. Another impression was that the next album is going to be fantastic. They didn't give the name of the first piece they played, but it sounded similar to "Munchen" off of Heavy Construction. "Response to Stimuli" was the next new piece. I remember it being very good, but I don't remember much else about it. "Level Five" (Larks' Tongues Five?) was very complex with a lot of unison and Gamelan guitar playing. "Crimson Blues" was more of an actual blues piece than "Prozakc Blues", but still very Crimson. "Heavy Construction" included a new complex middle section and was even better than the other versions I have heard of this song. "Deception of the Thrush" just keeps getting better and better, if that is possible. That's all the new pieces I can remember, but I think there were one or two more, plus another improv? It was fun to see them make mistakes in the material. This makes it seem more human. If I want a "perfect" version of the song I will listen to the CD. I like to hear real musicians making real music in real time with the real possibility that things can go "wrong". For instance, Robert Fripp had such a train wreck in "Frakctured" that he actually stopped playing for a few seconds, and Adrian got a few of the words wrong in "Dinosaur" and started laughing. I love that kind of stuff (although I'm sure they don't, even though they would smile when these things happened). I suppose it makes you appreciate the risks they take in playing such complex music. Another impression is that it really made me understand and appreciate the material and their musicianship after seeing them in concert. Seeing who does what was cool, and the level of unspoken communication between the band members is amazing. The improvs are easier for me to understand now that I have seen them perform some live. I don't know what the difference is, but I have now gone back to all the Projekct CDs with new ears. I was also surprised to see what a good time they had playing such "heavy" material. Even though I have the live DVD and have seen some of the other live videos (and of course I have shelves of CDs bursting with live material), nothing can take the place of an actual concert. I don't know if "the angels descended" for anyone else, but they did for me. And I don't even believe in angels! It was a truly magical experience for me, and I still do not completely believe or comprehend all that happened. If you are debating whether to see them or not this time out, GO! Even if it means diving into the mosh pit with the Tool fans. Speaking of Tool fans, I can't see them being anything but impressed with the set they played Saturday night. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #851 ********************************
