Both are amazing. I have to agree with Ray -- these are good starting points, especially _One of a Kind_. Also of interest to Crimson fans (and progressive rockers in general) might be _U.K._, which features John Wetton on bass and vocals, and Eddie Jobson on keys and violin. Since this is really tangential to Discipline (the list), I'll simply invite you to check out Atavachron (see below); it might be useful to you in your quest for "introductory" Holdsworth, and we'd be glad to have you around, of course; I just don't want to waste Toby's bandwidth unnecessarily... ;) >From: knishimo at fox dot cce dot usp dot br (Kazuo Nishimoto) >Does anyone in Discipline have an Allan Holdsworth discography? I'm a Finnish musician and I need some King Crimson lyrics. There are some in cs.uwp.edu, but for example the file 'discipline' contains only part of the songs, and in the end there reads 'Your request matches 1 albums and 3 songs'. Now I am interested if there is a possibility to get lyrics from this kind of "automatic archive". I mean I'd like to have the rest of the lyrics on the Discipline album and of course anything I can get. I was in junior high school and my babysitter who bought the usual pop 45's and the occasional Hermans Hermits albums won a contest at a local radio station. One of her "prizes" was a mono promo copy of Lizard. The station (AM pop) probably found this a good way to get read of crap they would never play. Well, you can guess how much she liked Lizard. So, she gave it to me so I took it home to play it. Up to this time I had only bought (and heard) Beatles and Beach Boy albums. So imagine my suprise when Gordon Haskell started singing and when the trumpets (slightly flat notes) on Circus played. I thought for sure these people "couldn't play or sing *right*". Especially after ONLY hearing groups like the Beach Boys and the Beatles. The thing I can still remember after all these years that caught my ear was the mellotron. Of course I eventually wore the album out. :-) Jay [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: 22 Mar 93 00:14:12 EST From: Michael Sheehan <70373 dot 3423 at CompuServe dot COM> Subject: Journal ftp site sought >>> plus I found the site which has the typescript of the Journal from the first box set (not all can afford the prices A$140 for each of them) so it was nice to get a copy of the booklet. This is as specific as I have heard, and it's tentative, as all release dates are. =) No word on King Crimson's new one in the latest update, by the way. =( Ought to be interesting to see how John's album turns out. I seem to remember hearing Carl Palmer say in an interview on the radio show "Rock Over London" shortly after Asia released _Then And Now_ that John was actually working on a solo project earlier than this (1990?), but it got tangled up in legal complications of some sort. Anybody know if this is the same album? -- Robert -- Robert N. Here's a good player who's gotta make a living. He has minor fame with Family, Crimson, Uriah Heep, Roxy Music, UK. He hits the big time with Asia and probably finally made the million he deserves for all the good music he's given us. Yeah it's corporate rock, but it's the best of its kind, makes the pretty girls warm, and yes ... yes ... I think "Solitary Man" is as eminently hummable as "Book of Saturdays". Someone mentioned in #84 about an upcoming Wetton solo album. He had one in the late 70's which, the story goes, the record company wouldn't heavily market because he wasn't young and pretty anymore. I had a copy of the album--a lot of short pop songs; good, not great. Minor trivia: The lyrics heard on the live "Starless" tracks: "Cards fall. Faces change. Cat's cunning shows." turned up on UK's "Caeser's Palace Blues." So does anyone know what happened to Ian MacDonald? -Chris [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: drue at z-code dot z-code dot com (Drue Miller) Date: Sun, 21 Mar 1993 18:53:58 -0800 Subject: My first time When i was younger (26 now) i loved sneaking into my brother's room to listen to his records when he wasn't around. In college i happened to hear it again: "Cat Food." And i've been hooked ever since. It seems that William S. Burroughs, Ginsberg and probably Kerouac hung around there for awhile, but mostly Burroughs. Anyway, Kerouac, author of _ON the Road_, wrote a novel called _Satori in Tangiers_--. Considering that the album _Beat_ is based upon the members' of the Beat Generation's experiences, I think that the title to "Satori" came from Kerouac's book title. The fact that Satori is spelled Sartori, I believe, is nothing of importance. A few years ago I lived in England. There I met and played with a guitarist (and cool guy) named John Peacock, who was a Fripp fan. He went off to some kind of art college in Wales, where, rumor had it, he and Eno occasionally had some exchanges. I thought I'd take a chance and see if John was on this mailing list, or if anyone that side of the ocean knows his whereabouts. So John, if your'e there, let me know (and if someone knows of him, please help us re-establish contact!). Nash Subject: Bruford <-> Sting Just a passing prediction: somewhere along the way, Bill Bruford and Sting will work together. The parallels are striking if you think about it. They are both "English Gentleman"-type personalities, and they are both rock musicians rooted heavily in jazz these days. The big difference is Sting's more commercial songwriting vs. Bill's more serious (and obscure to the general public) jazz charts. With the lack of exposure and lack of great income from Earthworks, a collaboration could turn out well... Of course, this is all just dreaming. Earthworks is a top-notch modern jazz outfit, and Sting is doing quite well for himself these days. It would be interesting to see their paths cross, if only briefly. Anyone heard anything about the Earthworks live album that should have been released by now? -john nash nash at chem dot wisc dot edu [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this mailing list or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The Discipline archives are available on ftp.uwp.edu, in /pub/music/lists/discipline.
