OK, I know one problem with a Tool/Crim combo. Tool was just in Detroit a little over a week ago. Ticket master listed the concert, but did not sell tickets on the internet or phone. Many people "camped out" at the ticket booth before the box office opened and were limited to 2 tickets per person. Tickets sold out the same day. [rumor says within 15 minutes] I do know people that stood in line for tickets and came back empty handed due to the sell out. I've never had problems getting Crim or friends of Crim tickets. I live two hours away from the box office and have to stay at work to make a living.... hence, I can not "camp out" in line to get Tool/Crim tickets. Dates and locations have not been posted yet, but I am already depressed about the difficulty in getting tickets. Best Regards Dennis Wiens p.s. any one who thinks that because Tool is not "main stream" metal [whatever that is] and therefore is not as popular as bands like Korn ..... Watch how fast tickets sell..... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 20:49:19 EDT From: Paulstewartkent at aol dot com Subject: flute in KC & picks and strings To Tancredo who wants to know about flute in KC: The first four albums ("in the Court...", "In the Wake..", "Lizard", "Islands", plus the official 1969 bootleg set "Epitaph") all feature ensemble and solo flute playing by McDonald ("Court" and "Epitaph") and Collins (the others mentioned). Club releases from this time period (69-72) should also include some examples. Remember that Crimson w.w. players were more sax oriented and doubled on flute for the texture and character it provided for the songs of the era, and not for the technique of the player (although far superior to, e.g., Peter Gabriel with the early Genesis). If you listen real close to Exiles on the Larks... album I think you will find some real flute by David Cross buried in the mix (it might be flute mellotron). Cross wrote in the Great Deceiver notes that in the early days of that KC lineup he did some flute playing and singing. Re: Fripp's strings and picks...... I once had the pleasure of attending a "clinic" by John Scofield which was moving along nicely until the same type of question came up. Suffice to say that I believe Fripp uses metal strings and plastic picks. I would be interested in knowing which leg Fripp puts into his pants first. Also, is anyone else in the Philadelphia area interested in having a seance to find out what kind of quills the "Founding Fathers" used in drafting the U.S. Constitution? And by the way, exactly how many seconds into "No Pussyfooting" did the band wait through before playing their first note at the Waterbury, Conn. concert? Will this be on the test? Anyway, i'm excited about seeing the Crim/Tool show as i'm in the chicago area. This time i plan to get there on time, as i missed a few pieces at the last Crim show last november :(.....For those concerned about the raucous, violent, moshing Tool audience, a suggestion is to simply leave the venue once KC has finished its set. Since i doubt if Tool fans will be moshing to Crimson, though i could be wrong. Personally, i'm not deeply familiar with Tool's albums; i've heard them a few times but not in a few years. However, i know enough about them that i consider it an added bonus that they are performing with Crimson. They are not a pop rock band for sure and it should be a most interesting experience, to say the least :) till next time. I got one. It's called "Metaphormosis".It's a limited edition of 1000 hand-numbered copies. The material is the 93A Brondesbury Road tapes (1967 & 68),and features Judy Dyble on two cuts and Ian McDonald on practically all the numbers.Mine was the second one sold that day, thereby cleaning the store out of them. They immediately ordered another five.Check out HMV's website to see if it's on there. The record number is Tenth Planet TP049. (Reading is not contributing!!!!) I probably wouldn't go see Crim/Tool. Tool is so huge they probably won't be playing anywhere but an arena. I don't think I can handle that kind of big rock show anymore. But I am really happy about the tour announcement because it inspired me to go out and buy Tool's albums. They have really grown on me, and their recent success on the charts is nice considering how wacky their music is. Maybe this will spawn a revolution where only CD's with long songs in non-4/4 time signatures will dominate the charts. Probably not. I am sure many of you are musicians. Do you find it difficult to compose a piece for multiple guitars without fearing that it is dripping with Crimson?? Anytime I write anything counterpuntal, I start to feel that plagiaristic paranoia. It isnt always Crimson. Sometimes it's Mahavishnu, sometimes it's Beefheart. I guess it would be nice to be a fan of artists that have no unique qualities to their music whatsoever. Also, a CD of my music is available at http://www.noodlesandgluerecords.com . It is possible that some of you might like it. There are realaudio clips. Sorry about the shameless self promotion, but I wouldnt recommend it if I didnt think it might appeal to some of you. What band do you think has the highest percentage of computer programmers as fans?? Do you think crimson is high on the list?? Years ago I was at a Rush concert and wondered if I yelled "typedef", how many people would turn their heads. How about "sigbus"?? I payed attention to KC because I read that Levin was in the band, whom I knew from PG. I stayed with KC throughout the performance, because even though I didn't quite get it, there were several powerful moments that broke though (like the first time hearing, "I repeat myself when under stress,,,"), and the band format and sound was not like anything I knew. Imagine the bewilderment of this unitiated audient as he watched the older man SEATED behind the glass panels, who except for his arms was virtually motionless, nodding to other band members every now and then. I said to my friend, "Look, this band has every element covered, they even have a clasical guitarist!" After the show, I bought Vroom, it grew on me, I grew with it. I have since became a total enthusiast. I have nearly every KC album (collector's club not included). I love KC, the music and the ideals inspire me, show me what vitality is; my life has been completely changed as a result of that meeting at HORDE. How can anyone say that KC going on a tour which exposes it to a wider audience, to a younger audience (those who probably need it most) is a mistake? I don't know how the band feels, but my own opinion is that if even only one audience member throughout the whole tour is affected as deeply as I have been, of this maginutde that is so literally unfathomable......it is worth it. Does > >anyone out there know about these? Drop me a line please! There was only one music video from Beat - a really cheap looking video for Heartbeat. Essentially, Adrian Belew was the main actor and he kept seeing his girlfriend/exgirlfriend/whatever everywhere - lots of early computer animation, and just generally really awful. The last video I think Crimson ever made was one for Sleepless. This was all together far better, but following in the footsteps of all the music videos members of Crim do, it still wasn't really worth doing. Again, it was done on the cheap. Tony Levin was a boxer, dancing with his own shadow. Bill Bruford was ironing his shirt topless for some reason, Adrian Belew had to hold himself underwater and burst upwards (apparently since he has a fear of water he didn't have a good time on this one). Fripp was the only one smart enough to stay away from the acting.. he appears only briefly in his Frejus-style bow tie suit playing his parts. This is certainly a moodier video and suits Crimson better. On another topic - hasn't anyone else noticed that the new Crimson album is, as described by Fripp, "Nuevo-Metal"? If it is, then Tool will be a kindred band. I've also noticed that all the members of Crimson are starting to look a little bit hard (to the non-english: tough). Have you seen the new picture of Adrian at his website? It's the first one in the left frame. Pure metal style. I have a feeling Crimson aren't going to have difficulty fitting their new material into a Tool concert. The only problem I'd see is the more relaxed stuff - One Time, for example, is unlikely to be played. I'd love to go to one of these concerts, just to see Crim doing what they do best... beating a riff to death. "Heartbeat" was directed by John Sanborn, a great video artist who was then based in NYC and active in the "downtown" video-art scene. All I remember of "Sleepless" is that there was an excruciating slow-motion shot of someone's bare foot walking on glass. :-) Actually I've seen "Sleepless" available as part of a promo-only Warner Brothers "video sampler" that occasionally surfaces on Ebay.
