Goodman" Subject: 200th Loop Of The Week Non-Contest May 12-13 Given the obvious influence that Robert Fripp's work has been on my own I thought I'd put this forth... This weekend will mark the 200th Loop Of The Week, posted at the EarthLight Studios site since 1996 (http://www.earthlight.net/Studios). In commemoration of this we are running a non-contest (named in spite, be assured). Along with the 200th LOTW you'll be able to find the story behind its development and history so far. The 200th Loop Of The Week Non-Contest will take place between Saturday, May 12 at 1200 hrs GMT (4am Pacific Time) and Sunday, May 13 at 2359 hrs GMT (1559pm Pacific Time). All people who enter the EarthLight Studios page at http://www.earthlight.net/Studios.html and send me the resultant graphic from the hit counter at the very bottom are eligible. I shall be monitoring the page between those times, and the range of numbers for selection will be defined by my saving the hit counter value at each end of the timeline. When you come on in and download Loop Of The Week #200, go to the bottom of the page, where the hit counter is, and save or send it, by either right-clicking on the counter and choosing Send by Email..., or by right-clicking on the counter, choosing Save Picture As... and saving the graphic file to your hard drive, THEN emailing it to lotw200 at earthlight dot net - we'll supply a link right above it for this. This will constitute your entry number, and be some proof to me that it is of course valid. I won't look at anything but the first and last numbers to be sent, and will then generate a random number in that range, the winner will result, and will be sent a copy of my CD, Club Meditation. Sounds easy, doesn't it? In any event instructions will also be at the page at http://www.earthlight.net/Studios. (Non-winners will be notified, with the option of purchasing their own copy of Club Meditation.) Be Seeing You. The guitar lines, at least up until the last two albums, do have a certain Fripp-ish angularity to them, but the rhythms are more, shall we say, athletic. That said, there are definitely similarities in the bass lines of Primus' "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Elephant Talk." Bassist Les Claypool also just released a CD with his Flying Frog Brigade that includes a live cover of "Thela Hun Ginjeet." If you're going to buy one Primus album, make it _Sailing The Seas of Cheese_. Tool reminds me in some places of the interlocking guitars of the 80s band, but heavier and murkier. "Schism," the first single from their new CD, has a repeating guitar line that is somewhat reminiscent of LTIA II, but slower. There are elements of prog, psychedelia and metal. The singer is amazing, both sonically and lyrically. Danny Carey, the drummer, is a huge fan of Bruford, although I wouldn't say he sounds like him. I expect the new album _Lateraelus_, to be pretty good, but their last, _Aenima_ is pretty amazing. I hear the most Crim in a track called "Forty-six and 2" that has some overlapping parts in and out of 7/8. Hope that helps. A local (Chicago) alternative station was touting the Tool/Crimson tour after the solo Tool show next week sold out in five minutes, so I just might call their bluff and request something. I'm thinking "Into the Frying Pan" might be the best choice for that audience. I've never read any of the Beatnik literature. How does "Beat" stand as a musical representation of that period's literature or personalities? I've enjoyed all of the KCCC releases, but #13 "Nashville Rehearsals 1997" is my favorite; I can't take it out of the CD player. This release was exactly the type of thing I was hoping to hear when I joined the Club. I can hear the experimentation, genesis and joy of making music in this recording. I don't remember seeing much commentary on the musical aspects of this CD in Elephant Talk, only the lazy griping about the alleged defects. According to my rep at Caroline, there was some shipping problem with Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, so they didn't arrive at Caroline in time to meet that May 1 release date. However, they now have them in hand and have begun shipping them to the retailers this week. At The Artist Shop I expect my shipment of Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair to arrive at any moment. I > lost my original CD about 2 years ago, and had put off replacement until the > remaster was out. It's been worth the wait. I've got it too and I'm underwhelmed. I suspect this jsut isn't a very well-recorded album. It always sounded thin, sicne the day I owned it on import vinyl. The new remaster adds a bit of heft, as did the DE remaster of 1989, but Bruford and levin are still too low in the mix. And essentially, the music has been supeseded by live versions; comapred to, say, the Absent Lovers rendition of Indiscipine, the studio version is tame, and DIscipline sounds clunky compared to the grooving AL version as well. It is nice to have the *right* mix of Matte Kudesai in remastered form, though. > I feel differently about the Larks' Tongues remaster, which I feel was > over-polished. Larks' Tongues has been my favorite > Crimson album since I first heard it, but for some reason, I really prefer > the original recording to the remaster. Similarly, my brother tells me > Fripp's Exposure suffered a similar fate. Exposure was actually re*mixed* as well as remastered, which I think is regrettable since Fripp used some alternate takes and parts in some cases, that aren't as good as the LP takes. That's why I ended up burning the LP to CDR. I quite like the Larks' Tongues remaster though; I only wish it included the little 'can we do one more immediately' coda at the end. ___ -S. Don't know anything about Tool, but I think a good Primus comparison would be "Jerry is a Race Car Driver" from the album "Sailing the Seas of Cheese." Though it falls more into a progressive speed metal (whatever the hell that means!) slot, the bass line is very reminiscent of "Elephant Talk". Primus is a goofy, fun band that has never taken itself seriously, but the musicians are quite skillful, and Les Claypool can make more happen with a 4-string bass than just about anyone I've ever heard. Enjoy! Can any readers suggest albums/tracks by these two bands that would > illustrate the comparison? > > Arnie Schulberg > > ASchulberg at aol dot com Hi. My first post to this newsletter -- it is quite intimidating. On the subject of a King Crimson & Primus connection: I've heard a live album where Les Claypool & friends (lanky bassist in Primus), or mayhap Primus itself, covered a King Crimson song, or even two. The one I definitely remember was a 80's tune, and I am quite sure it was Thela Hun Ginjeet off of Discipline. Oh, here's the album on which I heard the song: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A7xmtk6hxrkra The most clear connections between TOOL, Primus in regards to K.C. might be that the former bands have voiced their high approval of said King (although I somewhere also read that Robert Fripp stated he likes TOOL as well). And, of course, there is the progressive vein that is in TOOL's music, and to some extent in Primus'. Cheers. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 13:34:33 -0700 (PDT) From: ProgNaut at webtv dot net (Ron) Subject: Would Crimso be interested in doing a segment on VH1?
