Given the language barrier and the frequent classical music references on Fripp's diary, you might be forgiven for thinking "a fifth of Jack" is the morning's required listening at Chez Fripp. In reality it's a rare Crimson reference to an intoxicant... a fifth (a certain size of bottle) of Jack Daniels whiskey. Not to be consumed during heavy construKction, I assure you. Subject: hens teeth in a piquant sauce Read with interest the development of Larks' V in RF's diary, but wonder if perhaps it might be time to, errrrr, move on when it comes to titles. It just strikes me that detractors will use a Larks Tongues moniker on a track to beat KC over the head with no matter what the actual *content* is: they're dinosaurs living in the past, they never do anything new, it isn't as good as part , and so on. I assume since the original Larks V ended up as FraKctured that names aren't exactly carved in stone from the outset, and a change might help some minds open a little more. That's probably too much to ask, but it *might* do it for someone... I 'm curious to hear it, whatever it ends up called. I am an avid Crimson collector and I'm glad Fripp is releasing full length concerts these days because one thing the guy doesn't have the slightest idea how to do is compile. Witness Cirkus, a brilliant opportunity wasted. At this point it would make a lot more sense to issue a new compilation, but if it's going to be a good one for a change I guess massive petitions from et'ers are needed. My rationale on the subject is the following: Three cd's is too much space to cover the studio cannon of the band. Frame By Frame included the Court, Red and Discipline almost in their entirety. Given enough space Fripp WON'T give a better chance to any other album from any period. This is also the case with Sleepless (Concise KC) and Compact Kc. The only compilation which I think is not completely hopeless is Young Person's Guide. So what about the Revised Young Person's Guide to KC?: Two discs. First one reprises that original set except for a few changes being the inclusion of the remixes of Cadence and Cascade and Bolero and the mono mix of The Night Watch (from the promo) and the exclusion of Trio (not a studio track). Otherwise we'll have to wait another ten years or so before the demo from I Talk To The Wind is available on disc (if ever). Disc Two: material from Discipline, Bear, Perfect Pair, Thrak and Construkction of Light. These last two albums are not Virgin's but are distributed by Virgin anyway. Besides, it's a bit dumb to reissue and out of date compilation when a new chapter of the band has occurred. The mono mix of Heartbeat and the dance mix of Elephant Talk could be included here. The entry on the journal mentions Fripp's intention to update the fourth live cd from that on the original set. What's the point? He'll make another Cirkus and the material will be eventually available on club releases (some day he'll start running out of stuff). Also, another annoying thing is the inclusion of CD- ROM material on Discipline releases. I think it cheapens any album and of course when dealing with compilations it restricts the amount of music that could have gone into each CD. Finally, I read that finally they're working on a straight reissue of Earthbound. If Fripp is at last releasing stuff he'd sworn not to, I'd prefer a 24-bit reissue of the original YPG on gatefold cover. It fits one CD. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 12:42:42 -0400 From: "Julien Laurencelle" Subject: Re: Free as a bird ----- Original Message ----- > Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 10:48:36 -0400 > From: "Chris Deming" > Subject: Free as a bird / Dr. Diamond > > I don't know if its recorded anywhere... but King Crimson did cover the > Beatles' "Free as a bird" in concert. It was a memorable moment in a great concert. This performance of Free as a Bird appeared on Adrian Belew's solo album called Belewprints (DGM9802) and was live at the Longacre Theater, NY, on November 25, 1995. This is not THE version of "the night before the Beatles' version was released" i.e. Noverber 18 in New Haven, Connecticut. Nontheless, I find AB funny on this one, and the midi-guitar-piano sound too! Hi When I checked my mailbox this morning, I received ET #832 in which my posting "Heavy ConstruKction: KC after 15 years" was included. Along with it I also received feedback e-mails from fellow ET'ers. Very friendly community. This made me feel very good. So, what I want to say is that I don't read ET for fun, I read ET to share. It appears to be quite common that wives (/husbands?), relatives and friends do not vibrate in KC compatible frequencies. So it is natural to look around and reach out to share KC vibes and related interests. Prozakc Blues is a feedback from the band to ET that should be highly appreciated by ETers (ET has been KC-noticed). Unfortunately some kind of postings seem to have driven the band's attention away from ET (for health sake). The feedback received is to tell ET the vibes are depressing. I believe that music should be taken by the audience as a given product. Not even a very large African elephant can trumpet-command changes in KC's output, formation or whatever. Just can't and should not expect to. So when the elephant is about to push the button to post, check to construKct, and Kcshare good vibes. Thank you; excuse my English; now is best of times; I only wish I could be there to see it. Peace Pablo P.S. I think that Prozac should never be taken with alcohol ("Jack", right?). Hofstadter's "Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid"?" Albert, That Hofstadter book was a fun read (though, for me it was a long time ago, ). I see the similarities that you write of. I see even more parallels between Frippertronics/Soundscapes loops and Fractal Geometry (from Chaos/Complexity Theory). Similar to the equations of Fractal Geometry, the guitar lines in Frippertronics loops are 'iterated' (results fed back into the process, again and again) and being modified by the limitations of the equipment... producing a complex result. (As Fripp once said of Frippertronics, it is a great way for one guitarist to make a lot of noise.) The (newer) Soundscapes seem to have even more self-similar loops going on simultaneously (different length loops, and different harmonies)... as if they were complex-looking Fractals. As you zoom into Fripp's self-similar loops (by exploring them through the lapse of time), they reveal new territory... self-similar, yet different... and one could theoretically go on zooming-in forever. Chaos Theory, Complexity Theory and Fractal Geometry changed the way I look at the world. It made sense of all that stuff that didn't fit into the text books, at school. Looking forward to the new Crim. Best wishes to the Basement Dwellers in Nashville!
