Internet has made an even bigger difference for those of us living in faraway lands. When, at last, I got my connection, one of the first things I did was to search information on King Crimson and I found the superb ET-Website and then subscribed to this newsletter. My information about the band was, until then, limited to the album sleeves, and the last album I had listened was Beat. "Double trio", "projeckts", etc: all new words to me. Epitaph used to be the anthem of the only rock radio in La Paz (my hometown) during the 70s, and it was picked as the all time favourite song by the audience. By 1979 I knew all KC albums and Islands was my favourite. In 1981 I was fortunate to buy Discipline during a visit to North America. I bought it as a gift for the dear friend who had introduced me to KC. When I listened to it I didnt like it. I found no relationship between this album and the KC I knew and liked so much. Soon after I got into liking the "new KC" through Matte Kudasai, then to Sheltering Sky, then, mind got blown, again. But still I think of the 80s formation as a different KC. So, last year, I wanted to purchase TCOL but I found that it was too expensive for me to mail-order it and have it delivered at home, so I waited until someone could bring it for me from the US. When that happened, after months of reading elephant talk about KCs new music, I rather picked Heavy ConstruKtion. The set took quite a long time to reach home. By the time it arrived, my CD player had started to malfunction so I had to go to a friends to listen to it for the first time. This entire introduction is to give you a hint of how anxious I was when, at last, I listened to the first chords of the record. After the first audition I had a severe case of joy overdose. Recalling ET comments read, I picked TCOL to listen first, then ProzaKc Blues, FraKctured, Heroes, TOAPP, LTIA IV and then continued randomly. Wow, I do not recall having enjoyed so much any music heard before. Best music, and three full CDs of it. My wife did not like it so I am refrained and cant abuse. By the way, she liked One Time and said it reminded her of Sade. The vocals in it, as in Coda, are remarkable, intense, so beautiful. The improvs, being so different in nature, are also so beautiful, revealing the talent of the group and the awareness-alertness within it. Getting to know the new songs does not wear the surprise and benefits with enjoying anticipation (or anticipating the joy?). Since HC, I also started to listen more to old KC (even bought some remasters). HC has meant to me a bridge between eighties KC and seventies KC. Ltia IV relates more to the other three parts than part I & II to part III. This is, no doubt, the most electric KC Ive heard (EleKctriKc) and I must mention that the mood reflected in the painting of the cover is quite accurate in a sense: cold factory, no bucolic beauty. But, on the contrary, the music is immaculately clean. Well, maybe I miss some bucolic and warm beauty. What do you think? My sister arrived yesterday from N.Y. and The Projekcts set (plus Red and ITCOTCK remasters) are waiting for me to pick them up at her home. Fragments: Sorry to bore you but I needed to share and there is nobody around. Besides I practice my English. I only wish I could be there to see it. Thanks to KC members for their hard work. Thank God for their talent. Peace to all. Pablo P.S. ProzaKc Blues: In the Prescription for ET reading overdose, who is Jack? I presume his fifth is something to be listened and get the cheers. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 10:32:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Timothy Andrew Edwards Subject: From the TOOL website 4/27/01 Tool Will be playing 7 shows in U.S. cities this August with King Crimson stay tuned for details. I believe this is the only version of Trio that has been put down on an official release, other than the one on Starless And Bible Black, and The Night Watch Amsterdam release, of course. What is interesting to my ears is that this version, recorded after the Amsterdam show, has Bill Bruford adding what seems to be Xylophone tinkles to the improv. Indeed his "admirable restraint" seems to be lost on this rendition, and IMO the tinkles do take away something from the performance, evidence that sometime less is more, and here is our comparative proof. Having not heard any boots from that period, I do not know if a version of Trio was played elsewhere (although I suspect it must have been), and I do not know how often Bruford chimed in, so to speak. Perhaps others do know. My guess is that more often than not he likely did, which is why the "admirable restraint" attribution was given to the Amsterdam performance, as it was likely an exception to the rule. I'd be interested to hear other's comments on this. Meanwhile I don't understand why people think this is a same ol' same ol' Club release. The improvs are quite different than what is on The Great Deceiver and Central Park, and the sound quality is excellent. Keep 'em coming! Sam ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 21:44:15 -0700 From: "Randy Hamblin" Subject: Good Advice Hello. I'm another first time poster here. I read this newsletter because I'm interested in anything about King Crimson or Robert Fripp. I was lucky enough to be introduced to their music when I was a freshman in high school in 1969. I had an English teacher who let certain favored seniors bring albums into class to play while we wrote essays. I'll never forget hearing ITCOTCK for the first time - a real connection was made which carries on to this day. Unfortunately, I never saw them in their early and middle versions, but have been able to see KC three times in San Diego since 1995, including last years TCOL tour. The reason I'm writing this post is to thank the many posters who recommended giving a listen to some groups I'd never heard of. In particular they were Porcupine Tree ("Signify"), Spock's Beard ( "V" ), and anything by Present ( I got "Triskaidekaphobic / Le Poison Qui Rend Fou" and "Certitudes" and am waiting for "No.6"). I have to say that I have never bought so many CD's - sound unheard - at one time and been so happy with the results. These three bands couldn't be more different, yet they have all just blown me away. All of them contain interesting, challenging music that rewards repeated listenings - just like KC or Projects - and I would recommend them to anyone into meaty music. Along these lines, I would like to recommend a couple of John Zorn CD's - 1989's self titled "Naked City" and 2000's "Xu Feng". If you're into wild improvisation mixed with killer versions of film themes such as "Chinatown" or "James Bond" - Naked City is for you. If you are into manic, although structured, improvisation, then Xu Feng should do it. Also, how many posters are into Captain Beefheart or Pere Ubu? Or Sun Ra? Or Gang of Four? I would recommend anything by these artists to the adventuresome listeners I know read this newsletter. Pere Ubu's first album - "Dub Housing" and Gang of Four's first - "Entertainment!" were ear openers for me in the late 70's, along with Fripp's "Exposure". Anyway, thanks to all. I usually find the best way to wean non-Crimheads on KC is to have them listen to "Discipline" first, then slowly introduce their 80's-90's-2K music, then concentrate on "ITCOTCK" and anything else onward. I dunno, just my humble opinion from past experiences. My wife won't let me listen to Crim while she's around the house... Album: High and Mighty (1976) . Wetton plays killer bass on all this cd, but only sings lead in the first song called " one way or another" which is worth the whole cd's price. This is one of Wetton's better bass lines ever ... you will not be dissapointed. You can get this cd remastered almost everywhere. 2) With Wishbbone Ash. LP called " number the brave" from 1981. Unfortunately i believe this record is out of print, and very hard to find even used. My own LP is in bad shape. Never seen a cd of it neither. There is a song called "That's that" credited to wetton, that is also very strong and rock and rolling. Really worth hearing. I'd love to hear from you, as well as from any other people who are interested in sharing their thoughts and feelings about music. Can anybody give me a link to a web-site where I can find useful, but simple, information and explanations on the technical aspect of music? Gong will perform in Israel, sometime around November. I don't know any of their music - can anybody help? This recent "attack" of "progressive-rock" bands on the holy-land (Jethro Tull, Porcupine Tree, Uriah Heep, Peter Hammill) had refueled my hope for a King Crimson performance in Israel. I saw it in New Haven on the Thrak tour in 1995. I think it was the night before the Beatles' version was released. Adrian Belew performed it as a solo, setting his guitar to play as a piano. It was a memorable moment in a great concert. Jeff Beck, John Paul Jones and King Crimson - that would have been a cool ticket if it had worked out... but I can hardly wait to see the tour, whatever form it takes. I just received the new Club release - Live in Mainz. John Wetton really stands out on this release. Its the first time I've heard "Dr. Diamond", after seeing it mentioned several times in Elephant Talk. Its such an un-Crimson-like song, but I like it - it could have been their Hit Single... ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #832 ********************************
