Just thought you guys might get something out of this I have recently started a new band and have been asked by our guitarist to compile for him a tape of King Crimson so that he could get an idea what they are like. I spent a few hours pondering it and this is the list of songs I finally decided upon to introduce him to the band: Lament (SABB) Heartbeat (Beat) Cadence & Cascade (ITWOP although I used the remixed version sung by Adrian Belew) Cat Food (ITWOP although I used the single edit) One Time (VROOOM) Into The Frying Pan (TCOL) In The Court Of The Crimson King (ITCOTCK) Great Deciever (SABB) Book Of Saturday (LTIA) Trio (SABB) Dinosaur (THRAK although I used the album edit from my Promo single) Three Of A Perfect Pair (TOAPP) Ladies Of The Road (Islands) 21st Century Schizoid Man (ITCOTCK) VROOOM (VROOOM) Starless (Red) That's the list I came up with I'd be interested in what songs you people would have used (perhaps you've been asked for something similar by friends or colleagues). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 21:45:51 -0000 From: "mike mclaughlin" Subject: forming local ET'ers group Hi (again) ET'ers I've just been browsing the website (cause that's what I do when I can't think of stuff for my own site) and I noticed that the only ET'ers in the British Isles is in Wales, are there any ET'ers anywhere else in the UK? if so is there a chapter local to the North of England (and if not is anyone interested in forming one?) You should check out "los Jaivas" from chile. They did a mix of prog rock with folkloric music from the Andes. (they have been playing since the 70's). Hell, The Replacements > made a career out of doing that. Most real working musicians are not > necesarilly the tea totalling saints that fanboys want them to be, even in > the most hallowed so called progressive bands. When I pay money to see a musician, I expect them to be able to be functional enough to perform that show. I've seen too many shows (including everyone from Root Boy Slim to Jaco Pastorius) where I've gotten a refund because the performer was too messed up to play. As Mr Fripp has noted, there's an implied contract when a ticket is purchased; that contract does not entitle the audience member permission to shake the musician's hand, converse with the musician, or do anything other than hear the performance. That same implied contract obligates the performer to do the best job he or she can do that evening, and that the performer should be as prepared as possible to do that job. If I hire a carpenter to build some shelves for me and they're crooked because he was drunk when he made them, I would not be expected to pay for them. My expectation is that the musician or carpenter or any other person hired to perform a job will wait until after the job's done to get messed up. > Prog rock although requiring more technical ability is > still not the Philharmonic... Heh - Frank Zappa had a story about recording with the London Symphony Orchestra, and finding at one point that a large portion of the orchestra had gotten drunk and was unable to perform. It ain't just rock'n'roll that attracts drunks! > Lighten up and get a grip, the guy was probably having a good time. Let him do it on his own time; I'm unwilling to pay money to watch someone be drunk. If I'm invited to see the show for free, that's different - but somehow I don't think John's playing for free these days. -- ====================================================================== Joe Hartley - jh at brainiac dot com Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform. - Mark Twain ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 15:36:46 -0400 (EDT) From: dhosek at w114 dot web2010 dot com Subject: T-Lev and current Crimson recording No Tony's not recording with them. You Never Know (7"), released November 1975 Hello Krimsonites - Hi - I was wondering if any ET readers in the UK has a copy of this little gem. I'd love to hear it some day. *Charlie Drake. You Never Know (7"), released November 1975.* Written by Martin Hall and Peter Gabriel, produced by Gabriel, credited on the label as Gabriel Ear Wax. Robert Fripp had the following to say about this rather interesting session: "...When Peter Gabriel left Genesis (1974) one of his projects was to write a single for Charlie Drake, a well-known English comedian. The group for this session, at George Martin's Air Studios over Oxford Circus, was Peter gabriel (writer & producer), Phil Collins (drums), Percy Collins (fretless bass and later a founder member with Phil of Brand X), Keith Tippet (piano) and RF (guitar). This was arguably the strangest sessions of the entire era." Dear Sirs, Is this our first fight? I would never suggest any"musical covers". I was merelely responding to the findings in your FAQ reguarding the subject of Beatles songs. Of course as a fan of both bands I have fantesies of KC releasing their "Beatles Songbook"(ala Arthur Feidler) but better yet perhaps Paul George and Ringo could return the favor and do a KC tribute Ablum. Now that's something I might even install Napster to hear! Cheers and my best to boys in the band. Dale Hoyt ps Pardon my ignorance but HAS there been a KC trubute album. If not it seems long overdue. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 03:03:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Karl Maybach Subject: CK Covers; Neal and Jack and Me A recent poster suggests that Crimson's last cover tune was done 30 years ago. However, a cover of David Bowie's "Heros" appears on their absolutely most recent album! (Heavy ConstruKction). Even though Fripp did play on Bowie's original, I still think this counts as a cover. Another poster responding to the same thread is looking for KC Beatles quotes. Again on Heavy ConstruKction, we hear an improv that combines "Thela Hun Gingeet" with "Tomorrow Never Knows". A strong John Lennon influence, to me at least, is easily heard in Adrian's singing on several tracks on "Thrack". As for "Free as a Bird", I have not noticed that anywhere. Another recent thread focused on classical quotes from KC. Nobody mentioned their, to me, most obvious quote: "The Devil's Triangle" from "Wake of Poseidon". This is nearly a remake of "Mars" by Gustav Holst. This "cover", however, IS 30 years old. By the way, does anybody else see "Neal and Jack and Me" (from "Beat") referring to Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 13:03:35 +0200 From: "Arnaud Laimay" Subject: USA re-release Hello, I have a trivial question but as I suppose the people who write in this forum, check as well the release page of the elephant talk web site, I did not see any comment about the re-release of the USA live album, so I just wanted to know wether it is true or not? As well is it just the remastered version or will we have the chance to hear some bonus tracks? Thank you ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 13:58:17 +0100 From: Peter Clinch

Subject: Re: Trey Gunn = Jeff Beck In ET 827 Josette Caruso wondered: Does anyone else hear the similarities? > Does anyone else hear the similarities? Well, they can both go very fast when the fancy takes them and they're both IMHO very fine axemen (and neither has a big career in singing awaiting them...) but that's hardly the same as equality... TG tends to have a rather grungier tone when making Extreme Noise, JB uses sustain and bending of single notes far more, for example. But those are just isolated instances from numerous factors that go to make up each musician's style: I don't think I could ever mistake one for the other, though listening to both sets of albums just to double check will be fun... It's been a while... But despite the scarcity of public announcements in recent months CENTROZOON (a.k.a. TouchStyle guitarist Markus Reuter, and synthesist Bernhard Wostheinrich) have been working towards bringing last year's 'The Cult Of: Bibbiboo' sessions (now fully formed) into the public domain:- Canadian Producer (and 'Crafty' guitarist) Derek DiFilippo has completed the final mixes, and mastering is now scheduled for May 2001 in London with Simon Heyworth at the helm. Renowned sleeve-artist Russell Mills has also shown interest in the project, and may ultimately contribute the final artwork for what promises to be a very special release. Friends, enthusiasts, and random 'passers by' are invited to sample Bibbiboo's wisdom by visiting the all-new interactive Oracle Of: Bibbiboo (Flash) site at http://www.bibbiboo.com. Let Bibbiboo be your guiding light, (or simply ask her "does my bum look big in this?") It's inspirational / It's 'wacky' / It's - probably not what you're expecting! ;-) Amidst preparations for 'The Cult Of: Bibbiboo' CENTROZOON have found time to record and released 'Sun Lounge Debris' - a stunning new album of impromptu ambient works. This salient collection (whilst further marking out their own sonic territory) is surely the kindred partner to Fripp and Eno's early collaborative works. Hop over to http://www.mp3.com/centrozoon for further details, audio samples, and purchase information... As always, the latest news and developments can be found at http://www.centrozoon.de. This is music of the very highest quality. You can only make stuff as radiant as that if (1) you're brilliant, and (2) you've been making music for some time. These comments come a propos something in the Paperlate digest, where Brian Morrow was admiring Fripp & Eno and their early albums. Those tracks on 'Evening Star' are extraordinary. Much as I *totally* adore Genesis (and Hackett), they didn't create anything that can quite compare with Fripp in full flight; he soars above everyone else. ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #829 ********************************
