Just because John Wetton got a little drunk and played a sloppy show or two does not mean he is in some type of decline. Hell, The Replacements made a career out of doing that. Most real working musicians are not necesarilly the tea totalling saints that fanboys want them to be, even in the most hallowed so called progressive bands. Yes I'm a musician, I play out a lot. I drink when I play, sometimes a little too much, though I'm basically in control. Yes I blow a bass line here and there, it happens, but it's rock and roll. Prog rock although requiring more technical ability is still not the Philharmonic, and a good percentage of the players are rockers at heart, I'm sure Wetton is a rocker and that his career is not close to being over. God, some of you guys make him out to be one step from the gutter, or having Alzheimers or something. Lighten up and get a grip, the guy was probably having a good time. I would love to watch this video on my home theater and I can transfer an .avi to a .mpeg and then re-encode the .mpeg to a SVCD and bingo I can now play it on my home theater. I have tried to re-encode with many of the tools found at www.vcdhelp.com and can't get the audio right. The picture no prob...I tried a program called virtualdub and it will not open it to re-encode to a useable .wav...I think it is because it is a protected file...So if anyone has had luck in re-encoding please either post here or please email me on the side. I would love to hear from ya... Many thanks in advance...... Peace and catfood to ya all........ Hello everyone - I've got a snippet of information that someone will love to hear about.....somewhere ! I used to have an edition of the N.M.E. music paper from sometime in 1972 - in this edition they had a pull-out poster with the heading - "The worlds' best guitarists pick the worlds' best guitarists" There was an impressive list of great guitarists who picked their favourite top three - RF was featured - and his top-three at that moment in time were...... a) John McLaughlin b) John Williams c) Allan Holdsworth Just for the record - Steve Hackett was also featured and his top three were - a) Bob Fripp b) Pete Banks c) Jeff Beck I still wish I had this valuable piece of parchment !!! Hope it provides food for thought ! cheers - Tim Jones ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 08:15:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Adrian Pajakiewicz Subject: Latin progressive groups Hello everyone! I'd like to tell to the Crimson fans that you should listen "Childhood's End" CD from Tempano (www.tempano.com), a prog group from Venezuela. And I like to know more about other latin-american groups like CAST, EQUINOX and TEMPUS FUGIT. If anyone knows something, please tell me! Regards ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 14:03:35 -0400 From: "Pablo Velasco" Subject: David Cross's "Exiles". I recall having read here a comment like "David Crosss Exiles: Why?" It was quite a long time ago. Someone came across with an answer arguing how good a musician D.Cross is, but I think nothing was said about the record itself. I bought it because of D.Crosss performance in KC and Noisy Records overseas shipment deal. At first "This is your Life" caught my attention but now I tend to skip it. The version of the song "Exiles" has clear and solid anchors to the original in overall and, specially, in Wettons voice, but the sound is fresh, the pulse is powerful and incredibly moving. The fresh sound makes it fully compatible with the original also present in the recently spinned discs shelf. Even more intense are "Slippy Slide", "Fast", and "Hero" which are the skeleton of the album and great pieces of music packed with power and dynamism. "Troppo" is also a great song where Hammills vocals highlight. I feel that pulse falls back in "Tonk" which pretends to be too heavy (it is the second song in the disc and at this point my wife quits listening). "Cakes", with DCviolin and RF-guitar, is kind of a bonus track with a very different character. The album keeps growing after each spin and I had to post this comment. I hope the three producers keep efforts together. Peace to all. The e-mail address is www.prog4you.com. I've only had a few minutes to check the site out, but it is absolutely amazing. It has info on virtually every "Prog" band you ever (or never) heard of and includes links to what looks like several hundred band websites. Enjoy. Subject: KC and literature Dear ET-ers, For some time I was going to open the literature thread myself, but Carter Kaplan did it in his very interesting post in issue #825. Well, what prompted me in this direction was that the other day I was rereading bits of Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow" and just on its first page I suddenly came upon some words that struck me as a most appropriate definition of King Crimson music: "No, this is not a disentanglement from, but a progressive knotting into". These words come from a book famous for its incredible openness and polyphony of style and narration techniques, horror and comism in one, complexity. Doesn't it ring a bell in relation to KC? The ability to leave you baffled when you read or hear it for the first time... And when you just get used to a particular voice or style, here comes another. One more test of your discipline. "Knotting into" (perhaps in the form of Celtic knot) is the only way to appreciate the stuff. KC being neither pop, nor high-brow and elitist (at least not purposely)... It's like going beyond the Puritan distinction between the elect and the preterite. Not a band of corporate men, not a band of dodos, either. All the best, Robert S. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 08:57:11 -0500 From: "Snyder" Subject: CHICAGO GUITAR CIRCLE Chicago Guitar Circle Opens Website: The newly founded Chicago Guitar Circle is pleased to announce the launch of its'website.
