I remember he was asked something like, 'isn't this a strange move for you after King Crimson? Wouldn't some sort of jazz-rock have been more natural?' And he replied something like: 'no, I'm really a rocker at heart, this is back to my roots. Sometimes I got pissed off playing next to Bruford, he would never play anything simple' (these aren't the exact words - I didn't keep the article :-)). He was absolutely great in Crimson, he could stay with Bruford and Fripp technically but he was really direct; I guess a disciple of Jack Bruce. The brutal rock strength of Red owes a lot to him. Can you imagine them instead with other great bassists of that time, Jaco Pastorious, or, more forgotten, Percy Jones? They'd have disappeared up their own a***h***s. But what's been said here is right, Crimson-era Wetton is gone. I'm sure he was gone as soon as they disbanded. He was only that great because that was the place for him to be that great. That said, the tales of his decline are heartbreaking. As a first-time poster, hello to all. It is a double CD and there are some amazing tracks on it,especially In The Eyes of the World,Church of Your Heart ,Circus Brimstone and the title track. I also have Flower Power, another double Cd which is good but not as good as Stardust. I have yet to get Space Revolver but I intend to. I have heard Retropolis recommended as well. Allan P.S. Also on my 'to buy' list are V by SB and Signify by Porcupine Tree Confusion will be my epitaph ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 21:07:44 -0700 From: "Brian Pearson" Subject: Univers Zero, Present Hey, anyone heard much from these bands? Both are led by the same French guitarist (sorry I don't have his name handy) and are quite Crimsonesque. Obvious Fripp influence in the guitar work, but the guy has his own original slant on things and is not just an imitator. Only two albums I have are "Le Poison Que Rend Fou" by Present and "Uzed" by Univers Zero--both found on French vinyl in a used record store. TIA for any discographic info, or info on current availability. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 00:26:31 EDT From: NCir213855 at aol dot com Subject: Would the King of Crimson accept musical suggestion? In my travels of music files (.mod ,s3m ,.xm , .it , etc.), I've come across many orignal compositions with pretty good arrangements or cleverly presented. I figured maybe Fripp and company may consider covering these songs for future releases. Of course they may Crimsonize these songs. Would these sugestions be accepted? As someone else already noted, it is "Polytown" by Karn/Torn/Bozzio: an excellent album indeed. For all those who digs the Krims ProjeKCt, I also reccomend the last efforts from mr. Torn, OAH and RemiKsis: they are under the Splattercell nickname and there is some truly incredible stuff in there... Dear David, Do you want to swap your daughter for my nephew? I was playing KCCC #14 and Mell Collins was 'skronking' away on a solo. My nephew listened until it was over and then said "I think that guy needs some more lessons." (Oh, my nephew isn't that bad, he like Adrian Belew quite a bit.) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 12:43:33 +0100 From: "Stephen P. Goodman" Subject: Sounds Like...? :) In ET #822 "Buddy Fries" put forth: >About 20 seconds ago, I was listening to the 11-23-73 Amsterdam version of Easy Money. My co-worked commented, "That sounds like James Bond music or something. Like when he just killed somebody and he's running away. Or a 70s TV show." Dracula? James Bond? just one more TV nightmare? < This brings to mind a particular issue I've encountered too many times to discount its effect - I put it to you thus: My own experience with this goes back to a piece I wrote called "Sunrise", wherein I'd envisioned the approaching Sunrise up in the San Gabriel mountains (thus a piece from the unreleased "Songs From A Tunnel"). It seemed to me at the time that this was self-illustrative, and should be evident to anyone who should listen to it. I played this piece for a friend of mine, without telling him the title, then asked him what he thought about it - and was shocked to hear that he thought it was "about preparing for the hunt, getting knife, bow and arrows", etc. In my Righteously Artistic Indignation I asked him what the @#$ he was thinking, and told him that this was the most amazing bit of crap I'd ever heard. My friend responded defensively by saying, "Well, you asked my opinion?!?" After thinking about this and apologizing, I started thinking about this effect, and put it to you thus: The less formulaic or predictable a piece is to a listener, the more likely that their interpretation of the piece will reflect what went on in the listener's mind during it, as opposed to what the composer/performer had intended. Perhaps this is because the brain fills in what it perceives as the "gaps" or "missing bits" in the song? I don't know, would like to hear what others think of this postulate (especially those who compose/perform). It's certainly worthy of becoming an ET thread.
