When you combine that with the fact that Fripp's favorite guitarist is indeed Hendrix, then that superficial division breaks down. ([ Of course, any notion of "best" guitarists is pretty silly, due to the huge number of factors that can and should be considered -- such as do we use consistency throughout one's career or momentary brilliance (eg if Fripp had only played on the finale to "Pawn Hearts" and then retired, would he still be in consideration), etc. etc.). Most influential guitarist is much more concrete -- just poll current professional guitarists (but the result might not be pretty :-) ). ]) Ken [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1993 15:45:48 -0500 From: Jeremy Weissenburger <07822 at chopin dot udel dot edu> Subject: Correction Re: Source of the Mincer... As I understand it from Tamm's book, all the tracks (minus Great Deceiver, and Lament) came from the same concert: Amsterdam, 11/23/73. Any suggestions? I obtained a King Crimson single which lists Matte Kudasai (Please Wait For Me) as one of the tracks. Does Matte Kudasai mean "Please Wait For Me"? For that matter, what does Thela Hun Ginjeet and Sartori in Tangier mean? (other than excellent music, of course) The track I Talk To The Wind on A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson sounds much different than the original on In the Court of the Crimson King, as if it was sped up or a female singer's voice was dubbed over Lake's. Does the booklet which I hear is supposed to come with the LP explain this? (I own the tape) Who is David Sylvian? What has he done previous to working with Fripp? And finally, what ever happened to Steve Hackett? The last I heard from Steve was he recently released a live album, but all the tracks were recorded at least two years ago, and there was no new material. I know he has little to do with Crimson, but I was wondering if anybody knew. Does anyone have the lyrics of 'RED'? It's well known that the album was relesed W/O words but since there's a mailing list for King Crimson someone must have the words... If so I beg that person to put them in cs.uwp.edu ftp site or send them to me (ophir at libra dot math dot tau dot ac dot il). TX Ophir. Ahem, yes, by popular demand, I'm sending these out to several places, in a few minutes I'll be putting them on ftp.uwp.edu for future reference. If you can't ftp, I'll keep them around for mailing purposes. Lyrics come from a photocopy of what was on a Japanese release of Red, I believe it was a CD, the copy is the right size and shape. Why only the Japanese got the lyrics I don't know, but now y'all have them. Enjoy while you still can... ---------- Album: Red ---------- -------------------- Artist: King Crimson -------------------- 1. Red (Instrumental) 2. At a moment like, this ladies and gentlemen, I am ... completely overwhemlmed by the sense of occasion -- in fact 'feeble witted' would be a more appropriate description -- so all I can do is fall back upon, may I say a _classic_ and _historic_ announcement from the past. This doesn't regrettably belong to me, but, ... a now _legendary_ band in England, the famous Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera and the announcement, which took place at the Marquee, was something like this: "Right. Hands up those who like it. Those who don't, fuck off. Me eyes feel like pissholes in the snow. This is the last one tonight, it's called The Seeds of Space Fly By My Face." I think you'll be prepared to admit that in the face of a message quite as _devastatingly_ cosmic as that, anything I could muster forth would only pall by comparison. Yes, I think I would be prepared to admit that. While Robert was able to extract some interesting info about Vernon and his band, he offered some interesting tidbits of his own: 1. While he was "slaving over his computer and fax machine" trying to work out problems with his former management, a couple of Living Colour CDs inspired him to keep on working. 2. There's a fascinating little story about a King Crimson concert in '73 which was crashed by a horde of angry Maoists who thought the concert should be free. There are others. I need to go back to Tower and buy this mag (I usually don't read Guitar World because of the pro-metal sleaze factor) and reread that interview. There were inevitable comparisons made between Living Colour and King Crimson (LC kind of sounds like _Red_ era KC to me). In light of the recent discussion here on techno music (and Robert's involvement in it), I should mention that both guitarists expressed support for that genre. -- ******************************************************************************** Paolo Valladolid pvallado at sdcc13 dot ucsd dot edu Discipline is not an end in itself; merely a means to an end. - Robert Fripp [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this mailing list or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The Discipline archives are available on ftp.uwp.edu, in /pub/music/lists/discipline.
