On the night of Saturday the 11th of March on Channel 5 (UK Television), there was a program called "Outthere". This essentially is a program that compiles strange things that their researchers find.. One example was a film called "Beach Nazis Must Die".. it basically contained a fat black mamma called "Leroy's Mom" beating up and killing beach nazis (I assume). It was a 30 second extract, probably the original trailer. In one clip, "Leroy's Mom" grabs a kid who's been doing graffiti on a wall... she slams him back into the wall and what's he painted? Why, THE COVER TO IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING , OF COURSE! Strange the places this band's related items turn up. Just thought it would be of interest. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 19:08:28 -0500 From: "James J. Hannigan" Subject: Prog Top Ten Before this becomes a forbidden thread: It appears that the Canterbury bands like Soft Machine and Henry Cow did not sell enough. The same for Van der Graaf and Gentle Giant. Jethro Tull albums like Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play certainly verify their "progness." Pink Floyd is surely an early influence on the development of the music. I refer doubters to "Echoes" and "Atom Heart Mother." How can one say they were "rock" but Crimson or Yes wasn't? It's all under the big umbrella of rock, isn't it? Rush was a mix of prog and metal in their heyday. A good book on this stuff is "Rocking the Classics" by Macan. Complete and without bias. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 22:58:51 +0100 From: "AILEON" Subject: Fripp "dislike" for the past and video stuff HI to everyone! Well, recently people have talked about the importance of Belew and about the statement of Fripp's dislike for revisiting the past. From my pontio of view, anyone who pays 78 pounds for 6 Cd's of bootleg quality (or so) that dates back as far as 1969, can't really think that Fripp hates his past. I do believe that Fripp has a positive opinion of Crimson's past, but he wouldn't play a single note of any past material, the closest that it's got when in 1996 KC played "21st Century..." along with 80's stuff and THRAK songs. That's good, I don't want Crimso to become a Pink Floyd or a Yes, playing "Roundabout" to death! And Belew also plays his part, to me, he looks sometimes even more "dodgy" and "dangerous" player than Fripp. On the other hand, I'd also like to see a release of KC video archives, we all know that music is the first thing, but a good video gives you the chance to see things that you couldn't watch, because you weren't even born! And we all know that in video is harder to make "cheating" with overdubs!. Cheers from Spain. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 10:55:53 -0300 From: "Gustavo Enriquez" Subject: To Fripp - Eno fans Hi Eters: If you like Fripp-Eno, you will enjoy the french prog number HELDON (w/ Guitarist Richard Pinhas). The treacle-tonsilled one is asking a whisker under half a million quid (about 7 billion Euros) for his extensively refurbished Victorian house in London's Acton Green - interested parties who fancy a nose around can arrange a viewing by contacting Foxtons on 020 8996 6000. Sounds like quite a pad. Computer controlled fibre-optic uplighting, stainless steel floor tiles & trimmings, whirlpool bath, four bedrooms knocked into a single huge loft-style space, and decking on the roof for a bit of private sun-bathing. All in all, a great place to get back to after the gig with a couple of groupies and a bag of Class A intoxicants. I was very dissapointed, although i belive there are some very good choices, there are some awful ones as well. Prog rock to me has always been a very delicate style of music. There is a fine line between taste and tastlesness. It is hard not to go into the realm of knights and castle and such. Bands like Crimson, Gabriel era Genesis, and Yes are all bands that had the taste not to become hokey. If i were to make a a list of the best prog rock bands if would go like this. 1)King Crimson 2)Yes 3)Gabriel era Genesis 4)Pink Floyd(Not really prog, but have you hear ANIMALS latley?) 5)U.K 6)Emerson Lake and Palmer 7)Gentle Giant (although they can get a bit embarassing) I can't think of any more right now. Albums? Well, my top 6 are: 1)Lamb lies down on Broadway 2)Close to the edge 3)Starless and Bible Black 4)Animals 5)U.K 6)Foxtrot I think that bands like Jethro Tull and Rush don't have the intelligence behind them like Crimson or Yes does. When Prog rock turns into tales about kings and queens, and things in space i have to stop. I just like the musicianship and the fact that songs can be longer than 5 minutes. Honestly though, prog reached it's peak at around 1973-1976. And most prog rock bands got crap in the 80's, excecpt for crimso. Prog is a genre that can bring out great music or terrible music Have you heard Spock's Beard? I'm probably not getting my point across maybe a list of my fave songs will help. 1)Fracture-KC 2)Echoes-PF 3)Close to the edge -yes 4)The gates of Delerium- Yes 5)In the Cage-genesis 6)Back in New York city- Genesis 7)Suppper's ready -genesis 8)Lark tongue part 1- KC Well if anyone agrees with me in that prog can be great or terible, write me at Richard_Lewis_Clements at Hotmail dot com Bye ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 17:33:04 -0500 From: "Jay Black" Subject: Top 10 Progressive List - Tony Levin and Yes Can someone please enlighten me as to what recordings Tony made with Yes? I am embarassed to admit it, but I am at a total loss. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 11:15:10 -0500 From: "Brian O'Connell" Subject: British press. Not that I have anything good to say about the media over here in the states (they all suck), but after reading all the posts about the "top 10" list on prog it only seems to reaffirm my notion that the British press is overtly negative, especially when it come to any prog music. It seemed that way when I was in London last December, I read some startlingly offensive reviews in the papers. I wouldn't expect much from any top 10 show, at least you get to see some cool footage/interviews. It's just too bad that the country that produced the greatest prog rock has such a negative review of it. The Peter Gabriel site has some really funny reprints of bad reviews from his tours. Levin has quoted some really funny bad reviews in the past too. Prog rock has always received the short end of the stick in the press, but that's OK, we all know what we like in our wardrobes. - -Brian O'Connell www.unclesammy.com PS- Why wasn't Gentile Giant on the top 10? I have never heard this band, although I have been meaning to buy some music from this group of superstars from other art rock bands for quite some time now. Given my love of Wetton-Era king Crimson, my failure to learn about this group is really shameful. Can anyone offer a suggestion about a good starting point for an Asia "newby?"" Well John a good first pit stop is Asia's official website www.asiaworld.org where you can sign up for a newsletter similar to this one. Even though they been around for almost 20 years they've only done 7 original albums, the latest one "AurA" released jus recently, maybe the best with John Payne. There first album "AsiA" released -82 is a must and it sold huge worldwide but they only made 2 more with John Wetton "AlphA" and "AstrA", as you noticed all name starts and ends with an A. From the Payne era my personal choice would be "AriA" and "AurA". There where plans for a reunion with the original line a couple of years ago but as I understand it Wetton refused to enter the stage if, as Downes wanted, Payne was on it too. So first check out the website were they have sound bites and then go and buy the first album. I recently found a CD copy of RF's '1999-Soundscapes Argentina 1994' for sale. It's cover artwork featured a fragmented abstract landscape in four coloured circles on the cover. It also, somewhat unusually for DGM, featured the suffix '2' (for CD) to the catalog number (I've forgotten that particular detail). I've only ever seen the thumbnail image for this CD in the two catalog booklets accompanying DGM compilations and was surprised to find it with a completely different cover. Is this the original (deleted) issue of this disc... or the long promised reissue finally made available??? I have only watched this once before, so I had forgotten how "magnetic" this video is. I think all of us ETalkers would agree that this would be a great companion to the Deja Vroom DVD. Does anyone know if there are any plans to do this in the foreseeable future?... I also intend to get the new Sylvian: Dead Bees on A Cake CD. What's the ET reaction to this release? I had the opportunity to see the Secrets of the Beehive tour with Isham and Torn in 1988, and it was a real treat. Also, this recent chit-chat concerning the Roches reminds me that Suzzy Roche can be seen as Amy Irving's friend in the underrated 1988 film, Crossing Delancey. It also features a blurb of their music. Matthew K. Smith ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 05:31:42 -0500 From: "jesscott" Subject: Camel & Asia To respond to John Moshier in ET 810: If you have not heard Camel check out a new compilation release that should be out now, that I heard about in an Artist Shop memo. I loved their second album, Mirage. They did many others. Dynamite guitarist, Andy Latimer, and keyboard player, Peter Bardens, on the level of Jan Ackerman and Thijis Van Leer of Focus. Pity they never got any recognition in the states... The first Asia album was a masterpiece, albeit a tad commercial, but not much more than U.K. The second was OK. The rest are drivel. Greg Lake stepped in for a tour w/ them when they kicked out John Wetton for awhile, and there was a Japanese concert on MTV at the time, that would be worth relooking at if it exists. Great shot of Wetton walking down an airport tunnel with bass in hand and tail between his legs. Keybordist, Geoffrey Downs (The Buggles and Yes' Drama LP) continued the group in all their bubblegum infamy for quite awhile, but was incapable of doing anything approaching the first album... Renaissance was worthy, although a bit homogenized over time. Annie Haslam has just put out a CD I have not heard, that recently got mentioned along side KC in Sound & Vision. If you liked Renaissance you'd love Curved Air's violin/female vocal rock, and Eddie Jobson guested w/ them for a record, Air Cut. Also an American band version of this kind of stuff at the time: It's A Beautiful Day... I thought Starcastle sucked. How many ways can you do songs that sound like Roundabout? I won their first record on a radio show call in! Sat thru them once as warm-up for Todd Rundgren, that if all these other people are defining progressive, I should suppose he should get an honorable mention. As well as The Mahavishnu Orchestra. What did we expect? Hardly anything I like is on a top ten anything. Matthew K. The venue was poor, but he is a monster! I was expecting a lot of blues, but for the most part he and Alien Love Child rocked! The vocals were a bit muddled (venue), but the guitart playing was prestine and electriFRYing. VERY HIGHLY Recommended! Would any Crimsaphobe know where I could find "any" music he played with Trey? II. Since the touring with TOOL thread came out I have been listening to them. Not your regular 4/4 stuff. Metal, melodic, moshpit rock! Tool does a cover of LZ. NO QUARTERS. This being one of my favorite songs ever, I would have a high standard for a cover. Well this blisters! I swear at the end they do a fame by fame interlock, then they take off! If KC chooses not to headline this time around, I would recommend opening for TOOL highly. Though I wouldn't recommend the mosh pit. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 12:25:17 -0800 (PST) From: Robert Freeman Subject: Greg Lake a 21st Centiry All Starr Lake is going to be part of Ringo's All Starr Band this summer and will no doubt sing a tune or two.
