I don't think Fripp's 'audio verite' suited Gabriel best. -good starting points for Hammill cd's : everything by VDGG (Fripp plays some guitar on 'H to He' and 'Pawn Hearts), Fool's Mate (also with some Fripp), Over, Enter K , X My Heart, This, and everything from the 70's. I must admit that I was stunned by the quality of this music, it seems that they've made significant progress since Wild Opera. Their new music is characterized by unique simplicity which is, in my opinion, the quality very hard to achieve for many contemporary bands. And those trumpets and double bass sound so beautiful... Don't overlook this album. I still believe in miracles and hope that one day they will play a concert for us :-) Joanna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 09:38:06 -0500 From: "Colin Beaumier" Subject: Crim stuff on ebay Hi! Would anyone with a considered opinion on the LTE releases care to give us their feedback on those albums?"---- I really don t know if my opinion about LTE and BLS qualifies as "considered" but I ve been listening to that stuff for like about 2 years by now, so I will tell you what I think of them. Anyways, they are worth listening no matter what I say... I mean, don t trust MY ears, just trust yours... The first LTE CD is more like a "Dream Theater with Levin" CD because you have Portnoy following Petrucci all the way (both from DTheater), Rudess (former DTheater) and TLev playing "at their band". Is very prog-heavy metalish. You can expect thousands of notes per second in guitar and keys, "odd" timings, "endless" solos and also beautiful melodies. The opening track just blowed my mind away at the time (don t recall it s name). A good point is that there s no singer. I happen to dislike Heavy Metal singers except a few forgiven ones, here and there. :o) The second CD (LTE 2)... at first I didn t like it at all. Now I think it s far better than their first. We now listen to a "new" band, with a new sound, not just DT playing with TLev. I like that. The songs are somehow darker and somehow sicker. There s still Heavy metal floating in the air, but it has been "poisoned" by the prog!!! hehehe What struck me was the time that took them to make those cd s... I can t remember exactly how many days where, but I think it was no more than 10!!! When you listen to the compositions you ll understand why I m so amazed at this. They are really gifted musicians... All in all, two CD s worth listening and giving them a try, although I think there are too many notes for one to digest them (specially the first one) in just one quick listen at the music store. I hope this qualifies as good feedback to you... my regards, Ezequiel Guerrero ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 21:40:11 -0300 (CLST) From: "Miguel Farah F." It would be the other way around because Tool, has a much larger following, and would bring more people. I see this as a wonderful opportunity for KC to expand it's audience to a younger crowd. I am 18 myself, and am sure there are other people like me that would like KC but because of media exposure have never had the opportunity to hear them, and Tool's audience would probably be the most receptive to let KC in a grow. On another note, I highly recommend Tool's latest output Salival to anyone that likes textured drumming and guitar. The CD showcases their talent performing their complex arrangements live, and also their quirky side. It also has an improv on it titled Merkaba, that has shades of KC in it. Check it out. I couldnt accept that so because I pleaded they have requested in addition KC's "In the wake of poseideon" "three of a perfect pair" and "red". I will check on that porn movie that eno admittingly was in- must be something along the lines of Liquid Sky- couldnt image eno being in an ordinary sex flick. On a misc. note, I must recommend a local band which is only exists in the recorded form "Caveman shoestore" or "caveman Huescore( with Hugh Hopper that fuzz bass virtuoso playing and guest composing and arranging)" the band consists of fred chanelor on lead tweaked out lead bass elaine defalco on lead vocals and keyboards and drummer henry franzoni my second fav next to buford on the skins. they play conplex and beautiful music. also check out "Tone dogs" another defunct band that fred chanelor was in with special appearences by fred frith. I picked up the 30th anniversary remaster of ITCOTCK the other day, and noticed how the music was copyrighted to Fripp and licensed to Virgin. I assume Greg probably thinks the first KC was the only true KC and that Fripp does not have the right to release recordings without their specific consent; Fripp is, in essence, bootlegging his own band. As a fan, of course, we don't see it that way. I am happy to have all these remasters, reissues, and live KC discs, but that's purely a self-serving ideal. Greg may have some good points but we'll never know until the issues are aired openly by both DGM/Fripp & Lake. This was the second date of the tour, the players were laughing, and joking, and the choice and mix of music was just hysterically funny at times. The mix included some songs I recognised from the Robert Fripp String Quintet CD (which features CGT/Fripp/Gunn in '93), songs by Levin and Mastelotto (I bought Waters of Eden and Mastica at the gig, and I think I recognize some of the tracks), some King Crimson - notably Elephant Talk and Discipline. But the real fun stuff was the mixed in surf music, Apache by the shadows (with the synchronised stage walk), Beethoven's Ode to Joy, and Bohemian Rapsondy - with the audience doing the singing, and a long instrumental Yes track whose name escapes me. Most of the time all five played, Levin played 5 string, fretless, stick and accoustic bass. While pummelling the bass with finger sticks two strings broke! Pat had a large V-drum based setup, and its a funny reversal to see an all accoustic front line with an electronic drummer. The CGT played a few tracks on their own (including Bohemian Rapsody and Ode To Joy), but most of the time it was a powerful five piece. Afterwards the band were mingling and signing CD's. Don't miss this tour! Adrian p.s. the Crimson inspired band that came together in the San Jose area recently now has a name "Fractal" and is working on getting enough material together to start doing gigs. The lineup sounds like Fripp/Wetton/V-Bruford, plays every saturday afternoon and is interested in auditioning for a "Belew" 2nd guitarist/singer/keyboard or whatever to expand things a bit. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 18:05:21 -0800 From: "Dave Gaither" Subject: GIG REVIEW: California Guitar Trio with Levin/Mastelotto 1-28-01 This show was excellent. The Inn of the Beginning is a small place and it made for a intimate show. They played for about 2 hours and I finally got to see Robert Fripp's sister, who was completely behind CGT and their merchandising. The Encore (#2) was Bohemian Rhapsody and the audience sang the final few lines which made CTG smile. Tony sang Elephant talk .Sonoma County has limited places where you can see groups willing to play to smaller crowds. I just read that Trey Gunn will be there next week and so will I.
