A link to the timeline is on the ET main page and menu, or bookmark here: http://www.fringedigital.com/fripp (note: requires the Flash plugin) The RFT is a chronological, interactive representation of Fripp's recordings. It's meant as a supplement to the other great resources already available on ET, particularly Dan's King Crimson Timeline. For more about what it is and how it works, click on "Read Me". It doesn't yet include compilations or singles, but please let me know if you spot any other omissions or errors (both of which I'm sure there are many), and I'll include them in a future revision. I just listened to the sample and it sounds mighty fine! Here's text from their website: PROJECT PU, the first official CD release from MAGPU, is now available! This hour-long CD is derived from two days of completely improvised jamming in October 1999, expertly mixed and edited by Terry McIntyre. Various extra goodies and studio wizardry are woven in between the jam segments, resulting in an uninterrupted sonic experience. The full band tracks were recorded in October 1999 at the Remote Rok and Roll Research Laboratory. This music was created without any specific plan or structure; we just started recording and played whatever occurred to us at the moment. The best excerpts were then selected and assembled. The extra goodies include altered but lucid radio interference, a loopy collage, malfunctioning synthesizers, and an ambient track created by Kurt and our friend Erich Schriefer. It'll take you places. For information, go to << http://www.magpu.com >>. Project Pu track listing: 1. The Reverend Ben Wah's Sermon Through The Nanoverb: Introduction 2. The same tune? The first time I heard Fripp's "Elegy: for Mothers and Children" (on Fripp's "Radiophonics" CD) I thought, "Hey... I know this tune!". And then it came to me... It is almost exactly the same tune as David Bowie's "Subterraneans" (from his "Low" album)? The succession of notes in Fripp's (looping) melody even seem to follow the same order those in the Bowie tune's. By the way, I love "Elegy", and the rest of the Soundscapes CD's. And I don't mean to denigrate Fripp at all. (I have utmost of respect for him.) But, knowing his value for crediting artists and composers where credit is due... I was surprised not to see something regarding the influence of Bowie's tune. Or: Did the tune simply well up from Fripp's subconscious... (with only me noticing a similarity with Bowie's tune?). Or: Am I simply wrong about this? Is the tune different enough to be called an original composition? I know there this is a fine line that I am treading here. But have a listen. Did anyone else see the news item at Krimson News about Greg Lake being the one who is opposed to the Club release of Hyde Park? This is the first I've seen where a name was provided, although I guess it doesn't take much thought to eliminate the other band members as the potential dissenters, so I guess I am not surprised. The article doesn't provide any reasons for Lake's stance. Does anyone else know what they might be? For my part it seems very strange. After all, perhaps more than any other Club release from DGM, this one was truly a DGM vs. Bootleggers battle, as the bootleg of Hyde Park surfaced last summer, and the DGM release would have certainly squashed it with a better package and better sound quality. Doesn't Lake want to make some money off this release, or does he prefer the Bootleggers do? Comments anyone? Although the vinyl itself is worn and a bit shoddy quality, my guess is that the recording is from the sound board as very little audience noise is heard,, and certainly was not recorded by somebody with a portable tape player. So, with that in mind, has anybody heard this bootleg, and more importantly, I was hoping that Fripp himself would have a recording of this concert and will consider it for release thru the club. As only one other musician is involved (Eno) I doubt it would be hard to get the clearence/permission from him to have this relesed..." I have a bootleg of this same concert, titled AIR STRUCTURES, issued on LP by "The Impossible Recordworks/Route One/Legerdemain, USA" -- IMP 2-06, which was probably made in Holland. --TW (Dr P) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2001 14:12:23 +1300 From: Jonathan Newton Subject: Nigel Gavin At 22:37 28/01/2001 +0000,"Geoffrey Balasoglou wrote > Today I bought Gitbox's Touch Wood Album from a local cd store. >On Reading the CD booklet I noticed that one of the guitarist in the group >was none other then the Nairobi Trio's Nigel Gavin. If you can imagine Jimi Hendrix on mandolin then you're getting close to the kind of sound and technique palette Nigel is drawing on. In the context of that film, having "Iggy Pop" do the Fripp solo to "David Bowie's" "Baby's on Fire" with the Ronson/Bowie guitar "fellatio" routine thrown in for good measure is priceless. I give Todd Haynes credit for telling the David Bowie story without using either his authorizartion or music. But speaking of Eno music on film, I have a vague recollection of a movie from the early 80's, possibly filmed in Ireland, starring Patrick McGoohan and Lee Van Clef (?) as two spies/assassins out to get each other. There were at least two Eno pieces from "Music for Films" used in that film. So the album's title ended up being a self-fulfilling prophecy. The music ranges from full-tilt rock to jazzy to spacey and is excellent throughout. This stuff is worth checking out by any fan of Tony Levin's style.
