These tracks should not be pleasant to listen to, and damn right they mar an otherwise great listening experience. We, the fans, have no one else to blame for these recordings but ourselves. If people respected the artist's wishes and refrained from photography then we wouldn't have such situations arise. Seems only fair to me that the band puts this stuff on the CD, just like they did on the P2 disc, so we can hear the results our actions brought about. Did I personally take a photo of the band? No. But we should all share in the responsibility of what is more than just the effect of one or two individuals, but rather the result of fandom in general. Don't blame the band for this - we're the ones to blame. Until people see that it won't get any better. This message is from 9.12.2000 - I got a new computer so it was delated: Hi! I received "Heavy ConstruKction" a week ago, and listened to the first 2 CD's all week long (I wasn't "in the mood" for the 3rd one though). I truly love it! I like the new material from TCOL, but I like it even better live. Pat Mastelotto's drums "work" better and contribute to the atmosphere (I don't know a lot about v-drums - I guess some of the effects are achieved with them - am I wrong?). I think the less heavier songs, such as "One Time" and the great version of "Three Of A Perfect Pair", make the listening experience much more enjoyable - I felt TCOL (the album) lacked some mellow tracks, especially on its second half. HC is exectly what I expect a new King Crimson release to be and more! I just hope a similar set will be available from the US leg of the tour - living in Israel, I have never seen KC live, & all these live releases are a kind of a substitute. Did you know King Crimson almost played in Israel in 1995? There were contacted to play in a "NEXT" music festival, but the organizers demanded they'll play some of their older ("more familiar" tracks); KC refused. As for the encores issue: I have recently been to Jethro Tull & Porcupine Tree's concerts. On both, the band returned for encore, went of the stage, & later (as the audience was screaming for more), came back on stage for another encore. I wonder if that's the way they normally act... Top 6 KCCC Eletalkers, I could not resist answering Brad Wilmot's last post from #794! Hmmm.... the top 6 KCCC releases I'd recommend to a friend and KC novice would probably be: 1) Marquee (I hear you Brad about sound quality, but I just value "I Talk to the Wind" Live and "Trees" too much! But a I do agree to leave Jacksonville off the list - while it is one of my favorites, Boz' singing on the ITWOP & Lizard tunes just is too horrible.) 2) Beat club (for same reasons you say.) 3 & 4) Live on Broadway (counts as two) because it is so much better than, say, B'Boom. By the time they recorded it, the double trio was in top form. 5) Live at Summit because it is the best (hands down) live recording of that lineup, PLUS the bonus of hearing "The Creator Has a Master Plan"...stunning! 6) Live in Central Park. It was tough choosing between this and the Roar of P4 - both have similar recordings among the regular releases (the GD box and the ProjeKCts box.) But this is only a provisional answer anyway - once Hyde Park is released I'd probably use it as my sixth choice, depending on sound quality. But maybe it would replace Marquee instead of Central Park. Hhmmmmm..... This is just too silly....I'm sure I'd just have said friend come over and force him to listen to all of my KCCC discs, as well as all of my copies of the regular live releases, studio albums and box sets. As well as the videos. This could take a while, but it would be more fun than I've had in ages.... Cheers, Happy birthday to Ade, and happy holidays to all! -David Vella PS regarding Deja Vrooom, I bought it last month (taking advantage of the free shipping deal at DGM), since I expected to receive a DVD player this Christmas. However, the DVD player did not materialize. So I'm just going to sit on my copy of Deja Vrooom for a while. Maybe next year? Subject: mistranslations Dear ET-ers, As far as mistranslations go, the world's replete with them, but I think I have a good one, a gem actually. A few years ago, while broadcasting "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin, some Polish radio genius translated it as "All of Lotta's Love" (Lotta being a girl's name). I bet the guy was versed in German literature. Must've read Goethe at some point in his life and got it all wrong. Robert S. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 11:15:32 +0300 From: "Andrei Turusinov" Subject: comment for Heavy ConstruKction Hi, I was at the KC concert in Warsaw on June 11, having intentionally covered all that big milage from Arkhangelsk, North Russia. The difference between the studio album TCoL (I am sure you know how it had been recorded) and the performance of the same music in concert became obvious to me already after few seconds of the show. And this was the exact reason why I was so anxious to listen to a CD with records made during the concert tour. Unfortunately, this album appeared in Moscow too late, however, I am glad it finally has made there! At long last I have listened to it! Well, the sound is truly better than the TCoL studio CD - how could they contrive to make SUCH a careless (or should I say conceptual?) recording in a studio (even if it was a home studio) that the concert recording made by a soundboard sounds better? So, if someone wants to listen to the TCoL pieces with a relatively good quality, he or she just absolutely has to buy this three disc album. Many excellent improvisations are the plus (especially, on disc three), great picture in the leaflet and a 45 minute video (on disc two). By the way, the video is dumbly password protected in a stupid way, forcing a user to somehow senselessly register at DGM web site. It's an absurd marketing effort, because one can easily watch the video without the registration. After my familiarization with Heavy ConstrucKction I am still waiting patiently when DGM will finally start deliverying the promise to release each concert of the tour on CD's and video. I made my order long ago! At the time, I did not do it seriously, knowing they were not going to play it, but it seemed that no one reacted with anything but amusement (according to my brother sitting next to me, Fripp cracked a smile, or was it a snear?). However, after listening to Heavy Construction, something struck me. Try singing the lyrics to "Catfood" along with "Sex, Sleep..." I suddnely feel very stupid and silly, "Sex, Sleep..." does seem to be a development from "Catfood." Even the theme of the lyrics is similar - mundane, commercially driven, day-in day-out drudgery. Am I really wrong, or have they been playing "Catfood" all along? The next point I wanted to hit on is make-up of the audience. First of all, I just wanted to mention that there does not seem to be a shortage of Asian fans. I would expect that the percentage of a Crimson crowd which is Asian probably comes close to the percentage in the local population, but like everyone else, I don't sit around counting at the shows. Continuing with the audience make-up, has anyone else wondered if the FBI uses the Crimson fan base to look for serial killers - highly intelligent, young to middle-aged, white males that like listening to music that makes them feel like they want to kill someone? Personally, Crimson doesn't normally quite make me want to kill anyone, but I have read similar comments in elephant talk more than once. Crimson normally leaves me elated, feeling free, often tired or drained. The only album that comes to mind which ever had more purely negative effects on me was Black Sabbath's "Mob Rules" (they keep coming up recently don't they). Finally, Heavy Construction is spectacular. Peace, Scott ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 14:35:28 -0600 From: "Tom Hicks" Subject: Re: Deja Vroom? However, upon investigation, I learned that "Fripp" was misspelled in the review. This still seems like an item that might provide enjoyment to those interested in seeking it out. Here is a brief description of the book from Amazon: "Gappers are baseball-sized, burr-shaped orange creatures with a compulsion to creep up out of the sea and fasten themselves to goats. When a gapper gets near a goat it gives off a continual high-pitched happy shriek of pleasure that makes it impossible for the goat to sleep, and the goats get skinny and stop giving milk. Since the village of Frip survives by selling goat milk, the children must brush gappers off the herd eight times daily and dump them into the ocean. Three families live there--the Romos, the Ronsens, and a little girl named Capable and her widowed father, who wanted everything to remain the same. Oh, how the Romos and Ronsens turned their backs on the gapper-ridden Capable! Oh, how they indeed lorded it over her! And, given the coldness of her neighbors' shoulders, what will Capable do about her Gapper plague, as her share of the economy dries up?"
