Personally, I find these relationships quite fascinating - - - it's fun to see the connections. I've been following KC since 1975, but maybe I'm not worthy enough because I don't know the 6 degrees between a piece of lint in Robert's vest pocket from 1969 and the hair dryer in a Japanese hotel room from 2000. Jim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2000 19:19:32 -0500 From: "ccoulterwsc" Subject: On flashes, encores and Fripp On flashes and encores: Laurent Masse wrote in ET782: "Why such disproportionate answers from the audience to what is basically the same problem: a physical impossibility from the players to go through the whole set due to internal (Adrian's sore throat) or external (Robert's flash aggression) factors." We know singers can't sing with a bad throat. We have seen Robert play beautifully after a flash. It is not the same problem. If it is, so is a power-outage and an alien visitation. "The basic unverified (at least for me) assumptions behind this whole thread are that Adrian is generally considered a not so great musician..." Hold on. What fool believes Adrian is not so great a musician? Stand him up in front of me with a mic and guitar so I can laugh my guts out. My belief is that people were upset because they thought they might miss some or all of a show because Robert hates flashes and some jerks take photos during concerts. That simple. The King Crimson fan might feel cheated out of some great tunes through no fault of their own. Is this so hard to understand? Some have written about being cheated out of an encore: I don't think any audience is "owed" an encore, even if they play it every other night. That's up to the band and how they feel that night. Just like how they act on stage. As to the oft-quoted "No fetishizing, no worshipping" - Do you "like" his guitar playing and quote him? That's a form of worship. Do you "watch" his performance and participate in a newsgroup? That's a form of fetishizing. As to the possibility of "engaging in an equal/equal relationship" - Gee, I remember the last time a rock star sought ME out to engage in an "equal/equal relationship". All this justification for aloof behaviour is Mumbo-Jumbo. It may be well-considered and heartfelt, but, really, it's only Talk. Robert Fripp does not like flashes, photos, or smiling at the audience after sitting down. Fine. He's a great player, I'll indulge him while in "his"(?) house. But follow the Venal Fraggbert in his philosophy of stage manners? I think not. One has to be quite worshipped and fetishized to get away with that behaviour. I am rather surprised at the angry tones of some of the letters regarding Fripp. A difference of opinion is one thing but the RED anger is strange, perhaps a function of typing a letter with no one around and hitting "send" before hitting the bong. It seems to me, that for all his idiosyncrasies, Robert Fripp is a basically a talented musician who tries incredibly hard to do what's best - for his music for himself, and for those around him - including his fans. Okay so we get no smile or wave at the end of the show. (I actually don't find acknowledgent of the audience to be condescending to the audience). But do we EVER get a glimpse into the Mindfripp with his diary. Other than the occasional wave, I don't know any other professional musician who's willing to share so much. - - - Christian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Dec 2000 17:19:32 +0100 From: Ola Torstensson Subject: Re: Shakti Waaaay back in ET #767, Craig replied to Toby: > > [Remember Shakti's] > > new live album is "The Believer" and comes with a free video CD. > > -- Toby > > Mine didn`t have the video CD!!! Although I can't remember the name of the Honeymoon Suite album, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull had guested on one of their albums, either their second or third album. Eddie Jobson was a guest on Jethro Tull's A album. Prior to this Eddie Jobson put some violin overdubs on the King Crimson USA album.
