I'm fairly certain that the flute sounds are generated by a mellotron. In addition to the familiar string sound (e.g. "Epitapth"), the mellotron also had choirs (e.g. "Entangled" by Genesis), and flute sounds (I think these sounds are utilitzed by Tony Banks on the "Seconds Out" version of "Supper's Ready" to cover Gabriel's flute and oboe parts). Your mileage may vary. Fripp didn't start using the tuning until after the last Crimson. There's one tune on the Fripp and Summers' BEWITCHED album (the one word title beginning with M that makes me think of "mucilage") and everything after that, including David Sylvian's GONE TO EARTH and all Craftie stuff. wayne [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 18 Jan 93 09:22:33 EST From: dmandl at shearson dot com (David Mandl) Subject: Trio/Mellotron > From: cs163wel at sdcc8 dot UCSD dot EDU (Paolo Valladolid) > Subject: Re: Fripp's tone on "Trio" > Date: Fri, 15 Jan 93 10:03:27 PST > > On the _Starless and Bible Black_ track "Trio", I heard a flute improvising > along with the violin. Interesting how a couple of folks brought this up - I've played with one of these before and it was fun, but it had a limited high end, maybe 10-12K? What was really cool was you could reverse the loop in memory on the fly, making it posible to mix backwards and forwards stuff very easily. It did function a lot like a two-reel frippertronics delay system in it's degenerative delay/echo feedback loop capabilities. There was another Electro-Harmonix box that was pretty fun, and I still have one - the POLY-CHORUS pedal/box. Both Fripp and Belew use(d) one of these, according to a profile I saw in Musician or Guitarist mag back in the early 80s. But Electro-Harmonix boxes were sort of poorly made, and Belew mentioned in an interview that he had his remounted in a rack mount by a techie friend of his. Sounds like a great idea. I've had to re-assemble a faulty switch on mine at least a half dozen times. I have a hard time imagining Fripp putting his name on a box that would make other people sound like him. But Fripp never ceases to surprise and perplex me. The drummer is likely to be Marotta, who I think lives in upstate NY. There was a post on alt.music.progressive a month or two ago where a band- mate of Marotta's had said Marotta was due to work with Fripp and Sylvian in the near future, which led to some speculation that Sylvian might be in the new Crimson line-up. Was the Japanese mag saying that this was a new King Crimosn lp or just another Fripp related project? I've heard a live tape of a Fripp/Sylvian/Gunn show in Japan last March. I didn't recognize any of the tracks they played, but the majority of the show appeared to be mostly instrumental ambient frippertronics type stuff. They did do two very upbeat rock pieces that seemed a bit like possible Crimson material. One had Sylvian really belting out lyrics in a much stronger voice than I recall hearing him before. It was sort of like Belew but I actually found myself liking his voice better than Adrian's. The recording was muffled enough that it was hard to make out the lyrics. The other "upbeat" number was I think possibly a rendition of Lark's Tongue in Aspic Part IV. It was a very complex instrumental, and I suspect that it will be a new Crimson piece as soon as there is a new Crimson to play it. >As for the new Crimson lineup, Fripp said something to the effect of, "the >new Crimson would be a quintet; four have experienced past King Crimson, >and one hasn't." He didn't mention exactly what the lineup was going to be >like, though. Interesting news. I was ready to take bets on Sylvian & Marotta joining up with Levin and possibly Belew, but saying there'll only be one new member and 4 returning throws me curve ball. I sort of liked the idea of Belew and Sylvian together - I thought that could make for some pretty interesting tensions to pull the band in different directions, but if we only get one newbie this time round it looks like that would be the drummer? Who's the other mystery returning member? Sounds unlikely to be Bruford. Probably not Greg Lake at this time. Cross? Haskell? Someone on keyboards? - Malcolm [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: 19 Jan 93 17:32:01 EST From: Michael Sheehan <70373 dot 3423 at CompuServe dot COM> Subject: Marotta >>According to an interview in the Japanese magazine Rockin' On, Robert Fripp >>started recording an album with David Sylvian, T. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 20 Jan 93 17:45:55 GMT From: Toby Howard Subject: The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp (re-released) I saw this on sale in Virgin here. There were two versions, one a Decca re-release, at normal CD price (hm... are UK CD prices ever NORMAL??) and the other was a Japanese import (at import CD price!) with different track listings. I haven't heard this album. (It has a *gruesome* end-of-sixties cover photo of Fripp & the Gileses grinning horribly!) What style of music is it, and is it of anything other than historical value? Is it worth getting for Fripp's playing? Thanks Toby [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: 20 Jan 1993 16:26:26 -0500 From: MOONLIT KNIGHT Subject: Quintet? The revelation that KC will go to a five-piece, which is a first despite the fact that Sinfield was considered a memeber, is quite a chunk to mull over. If only one member is new, and one assumes it's Moratta, then you have about 15 people to choose from as to who is the fifth member. One would assume they would add someone on keyboards. The really scary thing is getting this revelation along with that Lake interview. Somehow, I cannot imagine Lake joining a Belew/Fripp/Levin/Moratta lineup. I suppose he would just sing, but I don't know if I would count that as his strong point these days. He is not a real forward-looking musician -- ELP has been completely (and in a way admirably) unapologetic in their reformation by simply perfecting the old sound. Other possibilities include Bruford's coming back to the fold, leaving the fifth musician to be a new one. It's not impossible in my opinion. Those who have plays keys/sax/violin are Ian McDonald, Mel Collins, and David Cross ... can you imagine an acoustic instrument in Crimson in the 90's? I can't. Well I suppose life in the Crimson watch is never boring with Fripp always dropping a word now and again.
