Seven of the tracks have never been heard before on disc, while many of the rest appear now in re-mixed versions, with most pre 1984 recordings featuring new vocals. The collection concentrates on Sylvian's output as a singer/songwriter, includes work with Japan and Rain Tree Crow while also drawing heavily on his solo output, alongside collaborations with other artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Robert Fripp. Limited edition includes three gold CDs, one of which is a four track bonus CD with the following tracks, 'The Scent Of Magnolia' (Edit), 'The Blinding Light Of Heaven', 'The Scent Of Magnolia' (Portobello Mix) and 'Brilliant Trees' (Version 2000). Recently released from Voiceprint Tim Bowness and Samuel Smiles/The Way We Used To Live ....import CD $15.99 This is a direct to CD recording of a performance at The Cambridge Folk Club on the evening of December 3rd 1999. What you get is what actually happened, there really are " no overdubs ". After hearing it back for the first time, the band hastily scrawled into their respective notebooks, 'some magic, some fluffs'. The band are influenced by the timeless sensuous late night ambience and doomy atmospherics of John Martyn, Arab Strap, Blue Nile, Nick Drake, Mark Eitzel and Leonard Cohen. In fact two Nick Drake covers are featured in this set, 'Fly' and 'Black Eyed Dog', as well as four cuts from last year's debut album ' World Of Bright Futures '. soundbite - Various Artists/Hidden Art Sampler ....import CD $12.99 Hidden Art was founded in 1995 as a vehicle for the more ambient and atmospheric side projects undertaken by various members of the bands Porcupine Tree and No - Man. Hidden Art Sampler is primarily a collection of tracks taken from each of the first seven releases on the label. In addition, this specially priced compilation includes over twenty minutes of unreleased material and rare performances from the likes of Richard Barbieri (Japan), Geoff Leigh (Henry Cow) and Robert Fripp (King Crimson). With a consistency of musical vision that echoes such labels as ECM, All Saints and EG, despite superficial differences, the releases on Hidden Art possess a distinctive filmic quality and a seductive rarefied atmosphere that suggest a strong label identity. soundbite - Available now from Crimson opener Richard Leo Johnson Richard Leo Johnson/Language With Fingertip Ship Richard Leo Johnson proved he could sound like a whole band with just a solo guitar and no overdubs. On Language he brings the band on board - and what a band! Guests on Richard's second outing for the prestigious Blue Note label include Paul McCandless (various wind instruments), Glenn Moore (double bass), Andy Reinhart (accordian), Matt Wilson (drums), Cyro Baptista (percussion), James "Worm" Wormworth (washboard), Warren Haynes (acoustic slide guitar), Reggie Washington (electric bass) and daughter Tess on cello. Can't wait for the next album! soundbite - I'm happy to announce that we now have a new corner in The Artist Shop for David Torn David Torn is one of the most celebrated guitarists in the worlds of rock, jazz, fusion, progressive, ambient and probably a few other styles that have skipped my mind at the moment. But much more than a guitarist, he is a gifted composer, well versed in all aspects of production, a loopmeister extraordinaire, a sculptor of sonic mayhem. When not working solo he's collaborating with some of the most exciting musicians around today like Tony Levin, Bill Bruford, Mark Isham, Terry Bozzio, Mick Karn, Andy Reinhart, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto. The man is a true musical chameleon. So much so that he's had to create a new alter ego for part of that musical expression - Spattercell! Splattercell/OAH Splattercell/Remiksis:::AH "Strange, beautiful, raw, haunthing...four of my favorite qualities for a record to have!!!" - Charlie Clouser/Nine Inch Nails. OAH and Remiksis::AH are the latest releases from David Torn in his new guise as Spattercell! With results like these, we can only hope he decides to pursue as many alter egos as he pleases. OAH is a major new release for him as is Remiksis::AH. Remiksis::AH finds him collaborating with such artists as Tim Bowness, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Charlie Clouser, Yoshiro Hanno and much more. A full length CD, Remiksis is much more than your standard remix album. It basically uses tracks from OAH merely as a starting point from which to create whole new works. No Torn fan should believe that if he has OAH, that he doesn't need Remiksis::AH! soundbite - soundbite - Gary ************************************************************** Gary Davis The Artist Shop The Other Road http://www.artist-shop.com artshop at artist-shop dot com phone: 877-856-1158, 330-929-2056 fax:330-945-4923 INDEPENDENT PROGRESSIVE MUSIC!!! ************************************************************** Artist Shop Radio Check out the latest Artist Shop newsletter at http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 16:44:34 -0400 From: Dave Subject: GIG BIZ: crim audients connection page Hey gang... Is it about to hit the market, 24-bit re-mastered or whatever? Is it only available to Club Members or are general acolytes given the privelege of purchasing too? If we all remember, that show was scheduled (unofficially), canceled (again, obviously unofficailly this time), and restated, finally officially. The first time around, I called there and they said they weren't sure how it work (seating). I, too, thought it would be at thje tables. But, you know, it probably would have cut the attendance by one half - minimum - and, I think that wasn't cost effective, which I can't knock. I have gotten pretty opinionated via ET recently, but I don't don't entirely hold only the promoter resonsible, and don't fault the members of KC either. Though the music is KC/RF's passion, it is certainly their livelihood, and during a tour, staying several days in one city has to really be worth ($$) the time. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 19:01:57 -0400 From: Spike Subject: new t-shirts Hey, I'd like to see DGM put out a shirt that says "I'd walk over you to see Belew" and should probably have foot prints on it. -Spike ------------------------------ Date: 23 Oct 00 17:00:26 -0700 From: "David Voci" Subject: Yeti's Coming(not Prince Kajuku) this pulled into the station on 746: >as for Yeti - were you referring to the album Yeti by Amon Duul II? >if not >it is an incredible Kraut Rock album...a must have in any prog >collection. probably mine and many other amon duul II fans favorite sonic blast by these 'krautrock' spacers...but no, not that Yeti but another band from Texas that by virtue of the very name of Yeti, made me feel compelled to check them out...and I did. It was, IIRC, recorded BEFORE the two C&E releases proper, in 1975, when Cluster was part of an alliance with ex-Neu! Michael Rother. That project was called Harmonia, also IIRC, and so the release is truly a Harmonia & Eno release, but was released under the title "Tracks and Traces" and credited to "Harmonia '75". I happened to get a copy at the last show on Cluster's 1996 US tour (their first of the US) which was in itself an unbelievable evening of improvised music. I have seen it at the Virgin Megastore downtown, however, so it has obviously gone through the major distribution channels as well. Honestly I haven't listened to it too intently, although there are a few tracks where Eno does some vocalizing which I recall to be pretty nice, and in general I remember it to be a pleasant-enough sounding batch of tunes, although nothing jumps out of my memory as a "must-have". I will email the list with specific label & release information if the interest exists; I am at work now without the CD for reference. 2) To the best of my knowledge, Conny (Conrad) Planck began his career in the late 1940s as Marlene Dietrich's sound man, and by the mid-1960s had become a sought-after engineer & producer by just about everyone that was recording in West Germany, particularly the pool of younger experimental musicians that had begun to form around that time. That he had his own studio space was apparently a plus as well. By the admission of the musicians involved, he made crucial contributions to the early careers and musical output of such important groups as Kraftwerk, Neu!, and the aforementioned Cluster (originally Ensemble Kluster) - I don't know if he ever worked with Tangerine Dream. Towards the end of his life his name began to crop up more and more as an official collaborator (i.e. in relatively bigger print on the front of the cover as opposed to begin in relatively small print on the back!), seen by many as a validation of the "unsung" contributions he had made to the German musical scene over the previous twenty years. He did, of course, work with many other more rock-oriented acts as well. I believe he died in the late 1980s, 1989 in particular comes to mind. This is all I know, but his name always seemed to show up on German releases in the 1970s just about as much as the phrase "Made in Germany" did. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 15:41:40 -0400 From: hwhitman at scte dot org (Howard B. Markus: I'm not aware of Adrian working directly with any of the Beatles, but he certainly has been around some of their close associates. If we play "Six Degrees of Adrian Belew," tracing the relationships, we could go: Adrian played on Paul Simon's "Graceland." Paul Simon played on "Saturday Night Live" with George Harrison. (He also appeared in "The Rutles" movie.) Adrian has played many times with David Bowie--"Stage," "Pretty Pink Rose," tours, etc. David was a close friend of John Lennon's, and the two wrote and recorded "Fame" together. Adrian's first "big break" was playing in Frank Zappa. Lennon was a major Zappa fan in his Avant-Garde-Yoko-wailing-in-a-bag days, and the two jammed together on a bonus LP that was included with "Somewhere In New York City." To date, Adrian has yet to play in one of Ringo's All-Starr Bands. But one can only "Imagine" what would've happened if he and Lennon could've collaborated. A member of King Crimson has played with a Beatle, however--Tony Levin played bass on "Double Fantasy." Regards, H.B. The few frail remaining brain cells insist that for instrumentals Tony Levin put down a rock solid metronomic rhythm on bass, and you could equally well keep time with RFs guitar (arpeggios ?) both of them remained fairly immobile. But Bbruford was moving like a wild man and seemed to be trying to do the melody on percussions. And since the others were keeping time, he had the freedom to improvise between the beats. In France they have something called a discotheque - no not that - it is a library where you can borrow CDs, records etc. No royalties there either.
