I realize the DJ experience is encroaching on weddings, reunions, and school dances, but, the last I heard, KC concerts are free from DJ infestation. KC is not spinning records here, waiting to take your requests. They are real human beings, playing real musical instruments in real time. And, might I add, they're pretty good at it. Since they are performing live, each performance is unique, even if the set lists are identical. For example, a lot of people go to multiple performances of the same Broadway musical. None of these people is going to complain that the set lists were the same. I've seen several musicals multiple times and I can attest that each performance, because it's live, is a different experience. I think this is especially true of the King Crimson concert experience because they improvise. Improvisation by its very nature guarantees that each performance will be unique. If they weren't, it wouldn't be improvisation. And, while you're at it, why do you only complain about identical set lists? There are a lot of other factors that don't change from set to set. How about personnel? Instruments? Staging? "Gosh, I'd like to be able to request any song with the personnel who recorded it on the original studio recording. And, while I'm at it, how about if Fripp gets off his a** and stands up this time!" Wouldn't we all. But they're not puppets at our disposal. So just relax and enjoy the performances. And if it gets to you that much, save your money and only go to one. I'm sure there will be someone else to take your place. - Tom ------------- Thomas W. Got a butt whippin' regarding your post, didn't you. Gotta watch what you send to ET enthusiasts. My comments come from neither a butt whippin' nor dictatorial mood but from personal cognitions. Yes, Epitaph is not of the highest sound quality, especially discs 3&4 but if you want to hear something really sonically bad, listen to KCCC #1. That one really sucks the big one. Live in Central Park isn't so hot and Live at the Moles in Bath isn't either, especially since the technology was a lot better then than in 1969. But here's my point; they're AVAILABLE. Ever since DGM came into being we've had the luxury of having all these releases to bitch about in the first place. Prior to this we all collected the bootlegs and had to deal with it. Who could we complain to? RF? Yeah right. Personally, I buy and accept the DGM releases, warts and all. The sonic quality, to me, is secondary to the chance to listen to them. The Epitaph release finally got me to see what all the brouhaha was about regarding the first band. ITCOTCK never did if for me. Listening to them live, with a "1969 mind" (i.e. remembering what was out there to listen to in 1969) showed me what the fuss was all about. Anyway I can understand and appreciate your complaint. Just an opinion. Another opinion while I have the floor is that I think KCY2K "lays the hammer down" as well as my favorite Crimson, the 1973-74 band. TCoL was hard to listen to at first as they seemed too have taken a left turn at Albuquerque. I expected to hear P3 with Adrian singing. The mix of the studio album didn't help either. It seemed to compressed/muddy. After listening to it about 4 million times, these guys lay the hammer down. Yeah Pat isn't Bill and Trey isn't Tony but c'mon guys, the reverse is also true. The Y2K four piece is more intense than the double trio. Bill and Tony gone creates a thoroughly different dynamic. Fascinating. Lastly I agree with Sid Smith in his interview that Trey Gunn is going to be a very important cog in the continuing development of KC. I've seen his band live and he isn't just a "little Bobby." They may see eye to eye on a lot of things but a Fripp copy he isn't. Oh yes, listen to Mastica to see where Pat is coming from. It really opened my eyes to his contribution to KCY2K. Over and out. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 15:29:31 EDT From: "Dave Lane" Subject: Re: Soundbites; Fripp-Eno Michael Flaherty wrote: >There have been some recent enquires regarding solo Fripp: > >I. It's not as simple as that. The booklets of volumes 1 and 2 list it as a forthcoming release representing the 3rd volume, but when the 3rd volume came out, it was called That Which Passes, and its booklet advertises Soundbites as the 4th volume that would only be available by mail from DGM, and it was to come in a collector's box to hold all 4 volumes. After several repetitions the numerous nuances begin to come out, but it requires the listener to be open-minded and accepting. To me Exposure seems to be at the exact mid-point of the transition from Red to Discipline: "Disengage" is on par with "The Mincer" in my book, and there seem to be some similarities between this material and what followed after ("North Star" and "Matte Kudasai," "NY3" and "Thela Hun Ginjeet," etc). Also current interviews, CDs and maybe some radio presented by the guys? I have for a couple of years been debating such issues with controllers, producers and presenters at BBC radio. Very few people take the trouble to influence radio broadcasters. Often the reticence is because it's not fully realised the BBC, as a publicly-funded facility, does adjust services according to majority opinion. Want to get involved? Or ask friends of your's who live in the UK & enjoy any kind of Rock music (you're welcome to forward this post to them). I'm currently very involved with encouraging people to debate : 1) Whether or not the government's Department of Culture, Media & Sport should allow the BBC to launch their proposed digital (+ Internet) radio service for archive sessions & interviews (1970-date) + urging emphasis on rock, more than pop by NOW expressing positive enthusiasm suitably. Deadline for submissions looms... 2) Seeking a Radio 2 rock show. I'm told the only hold-up is a curious belief women wouldn't enjoy this - I would! What about you & your female friends? Please urge them to join in (via snail-mail, if without 'net access). Both projects would certainly help musicians such as King Crimson, Led Zep, Yes & early Genesis members + new talent. The idea is also to feature some musicians as "presenters" - useful fees for Rick Wakeman, maybe?! Useful performance fees, also, for numerous song-writers whose archive sessions are repeated. Helpful publicity for tours & releases current at time of being on Radio 1.5 (working title) + Radio 2's rock show. Rock enthusiasts have, for 7 years, not had any BBC national radio show, apart from Radio 1's nocturnal Thrash & Death Metal show. Many BBC licence payers wish to hear music by Led Zeppelin, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, and so on. When would you like to hear a rock show? Monday evenings (approx 10 o'clock) is a common suggestion for a Radio 2 rock slot. Saturday & Friday evenings are less suitable, because that's when gig-going most often occupies Rock fans! Likewise musicians are more available for live interview on Monday evenings. Who would be best as presenter? Many people have suggested Fluff Freeman, who certainly seems to be universally adored. Another idea is Nicky Horne, whose stand-in slots on Radio 2 since last December have been much praised. (He even plays Led Zep, Meatloaf and Marillion - in the middle of the night!) His interviews with McCartney, Bowie & Hucknall were widely considered superb, when on Talk Radio. What ideas do you guys have for a rock show title? Would "Radio T(w)o - Rock To" be sufficiently witty - or too suggestive? A jingle could be created with the BBC's formal voice (maybe Sally Bausman) enunciating the first "Radio Two", whilst a male voice (ideally Fluff Freeman) finishes with "Rock To". Anyone have other ideas? I'm a woman who enjoys rock music. Would women feel alienated if rock shows take 2 - 4 hours per week of broadcast time, or do they enjoy rock on radio as much or more than men? RockOnRadio is what's needed! Simply put, what the situation shows is product improvement. You have had the "misfortune" of being first. For whatever reason the band has found that the show did not work as well as they would like and have made adjustments. Originally, as a matter of principle, and to underscore the identity of the band,(my theory, possibly, make that probably, wrong) they banned all pre 1995 (pre Trey and Pat) material. Apparently they found this to not be the strongest possible set and decided the quality of the show was more important than the statement of identity. Similarly, the band was to use v-drums exclusively to improve stage noise levels. This was a brave experiment that put Pat through the wringer. I'm sure he learned a great deal working within this limitation but now has added acoustic drums to improve the quality of the sound. The experiment proved unweildy in practice. Onward and upward. Judging from the diary entries this will probably improve the band even more than the added material. I have had similar regrets that the new 3 cd will be made up from the European tour when it appears that the Japanese and American shows will be a vast improvement. I will gladly buy, it but my regret is that its existance may delay any release of the new improved set. On the other hand this may be an incentive to order shows from bootleg tv, assuming they are working the new tour. One more item. I would like to offer another take on Fripp's decisicion to stop following (for now) the Guest Book and ET. I think it is fantastic news. So much of what is written here (my posts included) are given a purile fanboy slant because Venal Leader is reading and we are going "Oo, oo, notice me Robert. I am the true fan, I mean enthusiast." We should be talking amongst ourselves without trying to get divine notice. It's a fan site. Also, the emotional wear and tear on the band should be obvious. Fripp's relationship with us via the web has become more and more antagonistic. While I can't resist reading the diary because I want the inside scoop on the band and I am glad to learn what will be expected of me at the next concert, the venomous tirades against us dopey posters makes Fripp hard to like. That's fine. We're not going to hang out together. I just enjoy his music. I think the move should greatly improve Bob's life. He doesn't need this shit. I personally feel that if he had never begun this dialogue TCOL might have been about the third studio album since Thrak. And if the time and energy didn't go into Crimson at least he could spend more time with Toyah instead of us. Hopefully you won't read this, Bob, but if you do, "Move on."
