Well, > at least this is my opinion, any comments? I would just like to point out, in increasing order of relevance, that: 1) That the sources were from Plumpton & Chesterfield is well-known information to anyone who looks for it before buying. (I can't remember where I read that - it may have been in the Epitaph liner notes, or in an issue of ET, but it most likely is on the Epitaph page at the ET website.), 2) In the case of Plumpton, isn't it better to purchase an official copy and give Robert & company the cash they earned from it than to buy a boot?, 3) When Epitaph was released, the KCCC didn't yet exist. However, DGM was well aware of the lesser sound quality, which is why they offered it in two versions - with or without CD#3 & CD#4. If you ask me, DGM was being more "honest" and considerate of their enthusiasts than any other record company I can think of. They deserve KCudos, not KComplaints, for both how they handled Epitaph and for later providing the KCCC. -- ==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==*==* David C. The discs 3 and 4 were sold separately at basically 2 for the price of one because Fripp considered the quality to be to poor for the general public and elected to sell it to the die hard fans who would rather have a poor recording available to them that was not up to a standard he was willing to have in retail outlets where people would feel ripped off and want to return them. That is why the retail Eptitaph is a 2 cd set. This is a variation of the same thinking that eventually led to the collectors club. It is a way of marketing relatively small pressings to a small audience that is aware of the probable poor sound quality but is willing to overlook it for the sake of the music. Also the glut of overlapping material would not be acceptable in retail outlets where no one title would find a big enough audience to make it worth stocking. It was stated upon Epitaph's release that the sound on these discs was less than pristine. > I think it would have been more honest to release these disks through > the Collectors Club. Epitaph predates the Club by about a year and a half. "Honesty" really doesn't enter the picture. You can't release a recording through channels that don't exist. > There are recordings IN the CC that sound a lot better, like the gig > with Jamie Muir or the Summit studio CD. I agree. And I'll go on record as saying that I think the KC on Broadway double CD would have made a better general release than B'BOOM. However, since B'BOOM was already out there, it would have been a bit redundant to release Broadway as such. > Those recordings are very interesting but only available to members, > while these Epitaph companion cd's are of lesser quality and available > to everyone. Now is that fair? Not in my opinion, I think some CC > releases should be made available for everybody, especially those who > sound better than the official third and fourth cd from Epitaph. Well, > at least this is my opinion, any comments? One thing that needs to be taken into account here is the demand for such releases. I agree that the Bremen and Summit performances are spectacular, but the former consists of a dissonant half-hour improv and early, rough versions of "Exiles" and "LTIA I," while the latter is a performance by a lineup which has only recently begun to receive relatively widespread respect even from die-hard fans. As much as I love both of these discs, given their esoteric natures it's difficult to imagine DGM recouping enough money from either of them to justify widespread releases. The Club makes releasing these discs a viable option for DGM. The up-front $96 fee, while prohibitive for some, ensures that DGM won't lose money on these releases (or at least that they won't lose as much as they might otherwise). So is this fair? Perhaps, perhaps not. It seems to me as fair as circumstances will allow. If you remember (or don't) this release was available prior to the CC's existance. In fact a quick perusal of the initial mailer I received (which happened to fall out of a drawer as I looked for something else) even mentions this box set. Not in my opinion, I think some CC releases should be >made available for everybody, especially those who sound better than >the official third and fourth cd from Epitaph. Well, at least this is >my opinion, any comments? Well for starters the Epitaph set is 1969, and the quality of recordings reflects the early date in the history of KC and the circumstances and equipment of the time. We're lucky so much survived. Now to address your main point about fairness re Epitaph 3/4 and Collectors Club issues. (BTW my spell checker doesn't like "fairness" - it suggests "fairies", "fannies" and "farriers" as alternatives, amongst others - I do so love this technology!!). But to continue. It's all in the chronology. The Epitaph set was released before the Collectors Club started. It was a precursor to the CC in that the more specialist (worse sounding but nonetheless IMO very valuable) volumes 3 and 4 were made available by mail order only directly from DGM while the standard 2 volume set was available to all in shops. Fair warning was given as to the nature of vols 3/4. I too would like to pick and choose from the CC releases, however the powers that be have calculated that the release of these 'official bootlegs' on a regular basis depends on a paid up in advance membership to be a viable proposition. That needs to be respected, and it does mean the releases are available to all, as long as you are willing to join the CC. It's a tradeoff. You take your choice, according to need (and ability to pay), bearing in mind that this band already releases much more music through normal retail channels than most. Despite KC being one of my favourite bands, and followed consistently with wonder since that first great 1969 album release, I found after one year that the pace of CC releases on top of general KC releases was personally unsustainable, given the available dosh and other musical paths that needed exploring ( not to mention family, literature etc [ life does exist outside KC, even outside music! ] ). This is not a complaint - it just highlights the level of service and sharing being provided by Mr Fripp & Co. Would that others gave the same respect to their audience. The original CC manifesto said that particularly successful CC items could be released 'commercially' at a later date; though I don't think that has happened so far (??). Does DGM have any way or intention of determining such items - CC member voting, or level of non-CC member irritation, perhaps?
