TLG is a small music club that houses around 300 people. Starts at 19:30, the door opens at 18:00. This is the first time in history that KC plays in a smaller yet very attractive venue in Japan. No doubt that enthusiastic fans will fill the entire house! The club is known for its good sound environment, great design and ambience. ************************************************** Tomoyuki Ohsawa ************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 14:09:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Edgar Kausel Subject: Fripp & Eno '75 Some ETs ago, there was some "Smoking & Flashing" posts. Well, the other day I heard a tape containing some live performance by Fripp & Eno in France, back in '75. The "host" of the show, came in just in the middle of "Pipes of Bronze" -while Frippertronics were still on- to say the following words (in french): "I'd like to tell you a message that's not very nice, but we have to obbey the theater's rules. I've to say that the Police has noticed a lots of cigarrettes this evening... [crowd whistles]...I'm sorry... but, you've come here to watch a show... so you'll have to stop smoking... Thanks... And I'll have to ask the people who owns cameras with flashes...I have been asked by Mr. Fripp to request you to stop flashing. Please take your pictues with more sensitive films... Thank you very much." Back in 75! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 14:11:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Edgar Kausel Subject: Will USA be re-released in 2001? Who is the Creator of the "USA" cover? I'm asking this because it's very similar to the image of the monolith -with the mystical alignment of the Sun and planets behind it- appearing in Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" There are similarities that are important: - In the film, every time the monolyth appeared, it meant that Mankind was at a crucial point in his evolution, that Man has reached a crossroad. And, as we all know, Fripp was getting a crucial point in his life when USA was released... - Also, every time the monolyth appeared, the eerie strains of Gygory Ligeti's unearthly Atmospheres resounded. And to be honest, I hear some Ligeti influences in Fripp's creations, notably Soundscapes and Frippertronics... Even the names are similar "Soundscapes", "Atmospheres". - In Arthur C. Clarke's novel, at the end of it, he says: "Dave Bowman has ceased to exist, but he has not fied: The Star Child has been born". 'Ceased to exist". Does it sound familiar? Did KC and RF 'ceased to exist' just to reborn as "a small, inteligent & independent unit" some years later? Just wondering. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2000 21:48:57 EDT From: Milhouse60 at aol dot com Subject: Phish and ITCOTCK I don't know if this has been posted...but in the inside cover of the Billy Breathes album by Phish there is a picture hanging on the wall that looks like that funky man in the inside cover of the ITCOTCK album. I'm not familiar with the artist of ITCOTCK but I thought that I would point this out because it fascinates me every time I see the resemblance. Anyway, I would like to say that King Crimson is a surrealist band in that it unfolds a hallucinatory reality world in your mind that you had previously never known existed. In a sense, the music is sorta like a Dali painting mutated into audible rhythmic irregularities. King Crimson has opened my mind's potential and has made me more creative. Hopefully I, age 17 (CrimHead for 2 years), will be able to use this new creativity somewhere in the career world. Later fellow fans, Maybe when Crimson comes to town I'll see you all at my first show. -Ryan Cramb, GA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 00:17:21 -0400 From: "Timothy W Cox" Subject: Howe interview, Temple in the Clouds, re Heath I just finished listening to a public radio show with guest guitarist Steve Howe. He did an acoustic performance, talked about Yes, and discussed his signature model Martin. Of Crimson relevance he reminisced how Buford would constantly change his drum parts driving the rest of the band crazy. Buford-"tonight I'm going to hit this drum at this point instead and add an extra beat here and shift the time a bit etc..". Howe-" Oh no Bill, please don't, you keep screwing me up with all this craziness". It went something like that. Gotta love that Buford!!!!!! A personal story related to Howe. My friend has always been a huge fan of his playing so when he was able to meet and speak with him after a show a couple of years ago he was excited to say the least. He waited in line and finally had his opportunity, He praised Steve for his works and went to shake Mr. Howe's hand. Now, I don't remember who said it, either Steve or his roadie or whomever was at the table, but Mr., Howe pulled his hand back and sternly said, "Mr. Howe doesn't shake hands". Ouch!!! My friend was deeply hurt and has remembered the event to this day, but he still admires his playing. Just thought that might be similar to some of Bob's disciples experiences. In response to Michael W. Flaherty's review of "temple of the clouds". I just bought the album yesterday and I agree on many of your opinions. This is soundscapes light and I found much of it mildly repetitive. It lacks dynamics and noticeable movement from one theme to the next. Nothing really tugged on my ear to force me to listen though it is good background music. The liner notes really lead the listener into believing that the ruins would provide heavenly inspiration. After listening it seemed strange that so many years and effort were put into the album. I am pretty sure that I own all of the soundscapes releases and this, in my opinion, is the least powerful or inspirational. I am not saying it sucks just that it is too smooth and passive for my tastes. On a related issue. Tony Levin's new album has become a regular on Echoes, the public radio show dedicated to ambient and soundscapes music, which has just come on in my home. What a coincidence! In ET 730 Richard Heath wrote: >Perhaps the problem is with your friends, Tim.... maybe you should >dump Beavis and Butthead and get some who are a little more articulate. If it is relevant Beavis and Buthead both hold Master of Science degrees and have very broad musical preferences. Beavis is a very talented classical guitar player, a leading member of the local guitar society, and has enough confidence to call Christopher Parkening a very dry and prissy guitarist. Butthead is a bagpiper, but I have yet to hear him play.Obviously their ears and minds are not as closed as their comments may lead you to believe. I trust their judgments (especially when they agree with mine, ha). And to defend those (including myself) who come to quick judgments about music and the sort, it is totally reasonable to dislike or find average something at first listen. If you have to listen repeatedly or look hard for the significance of a piece then it obviously isn't magic. Of course it could be to some one else. For myself, when I listen to music and it hits me like a nuke, shakes my limbs, causes my heart to pause, and gets my legs bobbing then I know I have heard something special. I must add that all this must happen without the need of high sound volumes. Repeated listening is for music which is either weak or when trying to find the little things that help to spice it up. Anyways, I only wanted responses to my two questions at the end of my original post. Obviously, anything else that was written was meant to support my own feelings and observations. Mr. Fripp commented at length in his diary but he is not an audient and I know as an amateur player it is impossible to hear your own work from the same perspective as an outsider. And yes Bob, I always know when it bites me in the ear. The blood is unmistakably "RED" (humor?). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 12:25:33 +0600 From: "Yuri Zykov" Subject: Re: Russians put USA on CD > My comment: Who knows, maybe they have Earthbound on CD. Yes, russians put both USA and Earthbound on CD. USA CD sounds very clearly like it was burned from master tape (from where they could get one?!). But it could be vinyl of excellent quality (again, from where?!). Earthbound burned definitely from vinyl, this CD contains some pops and hisses. CD 3 is just a compilation of the five best sounding bootlegs from the Plumpton gig and cd 4 is Robert Fripp's own private cassette recording from Chesterfield. Sound quality is in a lot of places disappointing. I think it would have been more honest to release these disks through the Collectors Club. There are recordings IN the CC that sound a lot better, like the gig with Jamie Muir or the Summit studio CD. Those recordings are very interesting but only available to members, while these Epitaph companion cd's are of lesser quality and available to everyone. Now is that fair? Not in my opinion, I think some CC releases should be made available for everybody, especially those who sound better than the official third and fourth cd from Epitaph. Well, at least this is my opinion, any comments? Basically, just that the Disconforme release is far superior in all the aspects my previous post covered versus the Voiceprint copy of this magnificent CD. Thanks go out to a reader here for emailing me offline and telling me this. The extra tracks are different versions than the other identical titles on the CD and the sound is from the master tapes as there is no apparent hiss/scratch indicative of the vinyl parent as was the case on the Voiceprint copy. The only minor benefit, when listening to the Voiceprint copy, as vinyl was the source, is that the sound is just a bit meatier and jumps out at you with a little more fullness. Another nice point about Disconforme is that they have released the first Keith Tippett Group album on CD(You Are Here, I Am There) and a host of Graham Collier CD's, a gentleman who plays bass alongside many alumni of the so called Canterbury and British jazz rock circles. And for fans of Brian Auger and Embryo, there are also many of these reissues as well on this label. Just staggering! >It sends shivers up the spine! Absolutely correct my friend...RF seemed to drop all convention on some of those releases and play some downright nasty guitar passages, seeming to truly be content with himself and the others musically... A fair portion of KC's jamming in the early 70's was really jam oriented in a rock way and the music just hummed right along. These are really nice gifts from the vault and not to stroke the man but also a nice gesture to the fans who crave and wait breathlessly for stuff like this. Pointing out, what I think to be an obvious fact about the Crimmers...that this is truly a band that excels live and in my mind is at their best live.
