Well, in that interview, Mr. Malmsteen was pretty confrontational. Called McL. an "asshole" when he found out that John had jammed with Hendrix (thought this was common knowledge, some tracks even got released on "Nine to the Universe") and was obnoxious in general. I think McL. in general was pretty well-mannered in that one, too, considering he was being insulted by a young sh*t who had no idea of McL.'s history or stature in the music world. Not that he should have treated him with reverence but perhaps more respect! The interview was subtitled "Mahavishnu meets Motormouth" which was about the size of it! By the way, for those who have wondered why the live recordings in the new box set were sat upon for so lomg, witness the recent release on Rhino of the 1967 Monterey Pop festival. Previously only the Hendrix and Otis Redding sets had been issued, and there is supposed out be *more* in the can that didn't fit onto four CDs. That only took *25 years* to come out! Also, in 1969 Frank Zappa attempted to issue a thirteen-LP set of Mothers recordings, Warner Bros. balked and "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" (one LP) was all that emerged. The market for large multi-album sets didn't exist in those days. I remember people being stunned when Chicago, who had issued a string of double LPs, released a live set of four LPs (sort of a joke on the double-live album concept). So, by those standards, "USA" being just a single LP was about average for the times. The G.D. box would have been about six to eight LPs in 1975! Note that Fripp FIRST re-mastered those albums for CD BEFORE starting on the Great Deceiver project. AND, there is a definite appeal to the studio style of these tracks, that makes me prefer them to the boots I have heard [excellent sound quality from live FM broadcasts] of live performances. Particularly, RED has a certain "cool"-ness to the sound that would be entirely lost in a live performance. I heard the 80's KC do a track from Red live and it was almost a different piece. So, I highly recommend Red/Lark's/Starless (especially Red).
