When I started subscribing to various prog rock newsletters and digests about a month ago I thought people would be discussing largely defunct bands. But now, wow!, it's Prog Rock Year! King Crimson are on tour; Roger Waters is on tour; Yes are touring; Keith Emerson appears at the Smithsonian; Qango do some British dates; King Crimson have a new album out; and even Peter Gabriel has a new album, after a seven year break. This is amazing. I wouldn't be surprised, in the current classic rahck climate, if ELP, The Who or Led Zeppelin rise from the ashes; and maybe even Roger Waters will appear with Pink Floyd (no, hang, on, that's stretching things a little TOO far). Wow. It reads like an action movie in a way. Our hero keeps getting heaped with abuse until he can no longer take it and decides to take a stand(cancel shows that want extra dough for BTV). Good for him. Gives a new meaning to the term "Road Rage". Next thing you know, he may start flashing the audience back. "This is your day, Arthur Puty!" I also understand the frustration of getting booked into hotels on the outskirts of European cities. Better to stay in a one-star in the middle of town than an American-style hotel that's miles away from anything. I bet it would be interesting if RF could channel his discontent into song lyrics. Hey there, I'm surprised that no-one on the list mentioned Peter Gabriel's recent appearance on Jools Holland's live music show on BBC2. Flicking through the channels, whose luminescent crown did I spot, only Tony Levin's, accompanying PG's performance of "Father Son" from his latest, "OVO". They had played another track earlier in the show (with the full band) but I missed it - anyone know what it was? [ Yes, it was "Downside-Up" -- Toby ] Also on the show were the rather entertaining Eels, who surprised us all of late, by sampling the "VROOOM" string intro from "THRAK" for their hit single - much respect to the vocalist/keyboard player, who at one point retrieved a slice of pizza from under a hinged panel on his organ, and chowed down during his performance. Hello again all, now that I am over the frustration (maybe?) of missing out on a concert or three from Crimson, I can't help but seem puzzled by the bands set list, including only 90's material (excepting Belew's TOAPP solo acoustic version). That's a lot left out from their 30 years or 12 albums worth of material, in fact 10 albums worth. That is one thing I have been watching in the gig reviews lately and even when Crimson were contemplating touring Australia, I was already thinking about all that material that you would love to see and hear. An expectation I know, but lets face it, with the awesome music the Crim have put out over the years, you would want to hear some of the classics. What defines 'classic'? Well you know what I am saying and when a band tours as little as King Crimson, you can only hope a concert can contain your favourites whilst not expecting everything. The double trio did revel in early 70's material and heaps of the 80's songs etc, but for TCOL tour, the double duo for whatever reason, have opted to go for only two albums worth and leave out the other ten? I am not saying they should play something from every album (spare the thought) and artists usually feature their new album and other material, (unless it's a greatest hits type of reunion tour), but this to me seems a little restrictive for a Crimson concert. Still, I am totally frustrated from having very few options (none at all really) for a live performance, and if they come along you must take them as they appear. Crimson touring with a restricted song list is still a gig, alas, I may never witness. The Live in Japan video/dvd has it all, classic Crimson spanning an entire career, and that is the tour that we really missed out on. I just can't imagine seeing any of my favourite bands playing only sections of their last two albums and a bit of improv (and a cover) at a concert. Looking at it from an audience point of view is no doubt very different from the musicians, and artists repeatedly playing the classics, has even had me wondering how many times can they play something before they are totally sick of it, and therefore drop it for good. Yes are now setting out on their 'Masterworks' tour with Kansas (heaven, or at least one version of what could be heaven) throughout the U.S. and the Yes setlist is apparently spanning the 'classics' (eg, The Gates of Delirium, apparently not performed for a very long time), from requests via the net as to what fans want to hear. A tribute from the band to the loyalty of the fans support over the years! A brilliant idea and Kansas are also supporting their new album (and reunion) as well as performing classics from their history! I am aware of Fripp's direction as to the past musical history of Crimson and respect that view, however I am sure there would be fans of Crimson attending TCOL concerts and leaving, possibly feeling a little disappointed as to a certain era of music being left out. The 70's and 80's, that is a fair slice of Crimson missing don't you think? Just wondering what other Eter's think of TCOL tour song list? Cheers, Tony Greig. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 23:36:13 -0400 From: "rmlinar" Subject: It's the Music... Isn't It? I was surprised he didn't mention John Wetton who joined the group after KC broke-up. He was with them 1975-76, in between Crimson and UK. Has anybody heard of anything he did with the group? Is it better than their other material which TOTALLY SUCKS! "Lady In Black" is the only song I ever liked. I think ET#695 can safely be called "The Howard Stern Issue". I never knew he liked KC. Unfortunately I can't receive his radio show from Toronto because I'm too far away(or I need cable anyway). I hope it comes up on his Saturday night Fox show, which I always watch. Finally, about the question of whether there's anyone who has friends, etc. that don't like KC. The other day I was driving my mom's car with her in the passenger seat. I was playing TCOL. She didn't seem bothered by it until "FraKctured" came on. When the intense mid-section came on with Fripp & Gunn playing like crazy, my mom turned it off and said: "That's getting annoying". The only other real negative moment I had was when I played IN THE COURT... at a friend's apartment once. He said: "Well if you like it it must be good". When it was playing everyone was talking so no one really payed attention to the music. But when the instrumental part of "Moonchild" came on he got up and skipped the song. I FraKctured live version. As you all know, I heard the Great Crim twice in Copenhagen a couple of weeks ago (amongst 999 others). I noticed something when they played "FraKctured"........ 5 minutes 10 seconds into the studio version, Crimso goes into the incredibly-fast-guitar frenzy part as the peak of the song. When they played it live, this piece was substituted with a part of Larks' IV (ID number 8 on the CD). The pieces are very similar. I noticed it because the groove didn't come in as it used to do on CD. I thought that maybe it was too difficult to play live, or maybe just possibly Pat "dropped out" by mistake.... .....but it was totally cool anyway. I'm sure they did it on purpose. Did anyone else notice that or am I just crazy? II Rieflin CDs In search of something new for my hungry crimson record collection I recently bought Rieflin Fripp Gunn: The repercussions of angelic behaviour and Bill Rieflin: Birth of a giant Fripp speaks warmly about this new material in his diary during the last 2 years. The CD's has been in the vault for a some time now, but it's worth the wait... THEY ARE COOKIN' They remind me of the ProjeKcts work, Brian Eno's Headcandy and Nerve net or Sylvian/Fripp (when Bill sings in a deep voice). IMHO they are as good as the new crim stuff. Close, at least. The drum style and sound is not too far away from our friend Mastelotto. "Repercussions" is mostly trio-improvs, very powerful, leading my thoughts to P3/4/X; "Giant" is song-oriented and has more guest musicians, very groovy. Lots of Fripp!!! Could it be better? Go get them! Now! (Rieflin is the drummer from Ministry and he has released "Ten Seconds" on DGM in 1995.)q III Re-construKction of light. A cheaper way to get new Crim stuff is to listen to the good old TCOL in random mode! Any other track sequence is far more interesting than the "normal", or maybe I just got a bit bored. The tracks come into new light and fits very well segued with any other. Often cery powerful changes. I think that's why the tracks TCOL and Larks IV are split up in parts (tell me if I'm wrong). From the bands entrance to exit a la peter gabriel in the early 80s (everyone (except Larry) on frame drums marching in from the back of the hall to the shmedley of hendrix and kc's red Tony and friends did not disappoint. Definitely the best show featuring DGM artists I've seen in a long time. Maybe KC is missing Tony Levin at the moment, but this audient was certainly glad to see him (and Larry Fast and Jerry Marotta again) as well as Jesse Gress--who can play both the Fripp and Belew parts of Elephant Talk live--no problem. They played for two hours. Jerry explained what his spring drum is and at one point, tony, jerry and jesse even sat down on the stage with feet dangling right in front of us. Tony sang a ballad in italian to us, too :) Nevermind the arguments for or against TCOL or the current lineup of KC--these guys rocked. Even the opening act--Bill Walker was great. He played 30 minutes of ambient guitarscapes. The audience gave him a lot of applause, too. At the end there was plenty of product available that Tony was only too happy to sign. Someone brought a bass for Tony to sign and I even saw a Chuck Mangione Quartet album called 'Alive!' that Tony signed, too. If they are coming to a town near you go see 'em.
