Please give your ET post a suitable "Subject:" line. Posts with a Subject of "RE: Elephant Talk #656" will not make it into ET, and the poster will not normally be notified. 2. Please send posts as plain text. Posts with exotic MIME encodings, or HTML/Rich Text mail may appear in ET, or may not. Play safe and send plain text. 3. If you are quoting text from a previous ET post, please use the minimum length quote to make your point. If you quote the whole of a previous ET in your post (people sometimes do!) your post will not appear and you will not be notified. I hope these few protocols seem reasonable -- and I apologise for not being able to notify posters when their posts are problematic -- there simply isn't time, usually. I am working on some new code to help automate dealing with problematic posts, but even when that's working, I'd appreciate ETers noting the points above. Cheers and sorry to sound like your Mother. However, I still think it could have made a > great King Crimson song. I wrote a long and apologetic personal note to Ian a bit earlier this evening, but also wanted to post something to ET expressing my regret at my choice of words in which to express myself, not to mention admitting to a certain presumptuousness on my part (the kind of presumptuousness that most likely led Mr. Belew to label ET a "turd"...) This is a bit of what I sent to Ian: Just wanted to state this for the record. I continue to believe myself to have been one of the more vociferous fans of this version of the band, aided and abetted in this case by the fact that, since I've been listening to boots of their gigs for a few years now, I've strongly felt for quite some time that this version of King Crimson is as worthy as any other to have borne the KC mantle. (The only thing that could have prevented me from attending the Jacksonville gig on KCCC#2, given that I actually DID live there at the time, was that I was unfortunately only 5 years old). It was very different, but it was unique and musically sound. And the release of the two Collectors Club discs dedicated to this band lend credence to my point in ways that "Earthbound," for the most part, did not. So while I feel vindicated in my high opinion of this version of KC, nevertheless I felt it necessary to share my apology to Ian regarding the post he mentions with everyone else who read my original message. And Ian, you are quite correct. "The Creator Has a Master Plan" DID, in fact, make a great Crimson song for this version of the band. Caught the Shawn Persinger/Richard Leo Johnson/CGT w/T-Lev show last night. I hope no one spoils the surprises that CGT w/T-Lev have in store for ya if you have yet to see them. Try to catch these guys if you can. Whodathunk there was room for a bass line in there? T-Lev is to go on tour for his newest, Waters of Eden, next month, so the CGT/T-Lev tour dates left are few. See: http://www.cgtrio.com/yamanews.htm for a show hopefully near you. Speaking w/Paul Richards from CGT after the show, I inquired as to whether they may be opening for Crim this year, as they had in the past. It turns out Richard Leo Johnson, another of the night's performers, will be the opening act, at least for Nashville. Richard is very talented, playing a custom dual neck acoustic, one neck twelve stringed, one neck six. His harmonics/pops/slides/slaps are slightly reminiscent of Michael Hedges, but don't get me wrong, his style is quite different. Speaking with Richard very briefly after the show, he seemed pretty excited to be the opener for them. And I know I can't wait to see him perform again. Hopefully someone more eloquent than myself will do a complete review of the show, I just wanted to pass along that info. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 02:14:59 -0400 From: "taper88" Subject: More Earthbound Brouhaha Concerning the furor over Earthbound, will it be released or not? I would say probably not, especially as an "Official" release. The sound qaulity is atrocious and is actually painful to listen to. Now maybe it would be considered for a "Club" release since the first few were of a similar quality and they sold well. Regardless i think Earthbound's importance has waned with the recent releases from that era by DGM. I write this while listening to my copy on CD. I bought the LP back in the 80s, taped it & then packed it away in the 90s when i switched over to CDs. I always kept an eye out for it on CD and it wasn't until 97, i think, that i finally found it in a New/Used Record store in Maryland. It was a quality production with all the original graphics, pics & liner notes. And only $20. In addition, it had 4 bonus tracks(filler) from the Concertgebouw show from Nov. 23, 1973. After I got it home and on the CD player i was pleased to hear the quality was just as good as the LP( i was afraid it was going to be worse). The 4 Bonus tracks on the other hand were dry, colorless and very subdued. But 2 months later "The Nightwatch" was released and that took care of that. I only mention all this because it seems they are many people who want it but can't find it. It is out there. I've seen it within the last year at least twice. The price seems to have gone up a bit but it is out there. Check out the non-chain record stores. For the price, it's not really worth it, but that is easy for me to say since i have it. If i see it again i'll grab it and post the news, but until then the "Club" is the better value. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 12:02:19 +0000 From: Pascal Sauvaget Subject: gatefold editions Bonjour, i've read that some of you could not find the three gatefold ITWOP, L, I. One day, about midday, I heard a long piece (or maybe it was a whole album?) that lasted almost an hour and which was never identified by the DJ. It was yer basic 70s progressive with lotsa keyboards, odd-meter riffs, the occasional sax/flute solo, etc. The vocals (done in English by a guy with a bluesy, David Clayton Thomas-ish voice) seemed to be telling a story (maybe a concept album?) about a guy who looks a butterfly in the eye and it takes him on a journey to meet The Butter King. Some parts kinda rocked and other parts were sorta silly. Anybody have any idea what band/artist this might be? Churn on, Peter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 11:37:35 -0500 (CDT) From: Paul Murray Subject: Reveiw: Vortexan trio rocks TX Hello all, I was surprised to see very little in ET about Trey Gunn touring with Eric Johnson and Jerry Marotta on a four date tour of Texas. I later saw it listed on the ET concert page, but the only pre-show buzz I found was in Trey Gunn's web page and diary! I attended the last two shows in Houston at the International Festival, and in Austin at La Zona Rosa. Let me just say it now--these guys kicked serious butt. For any ET'ers not familiar with Johnson, he is one of the most talented, technically proficient guitarists to ever hail from Austin, Texas. Playing everything from shuffle to boogie, driving rock 'n roll beats to amazing acoustic work, this was the best form I have seen him in. (Aside: I'd highly recommend his albums "Ah Via Musicom" and "Venus Isle" if you are looking for something outside the traditional rock vein.) Most people at these shows were there to see Johnson and had no idea who Trey Gunn is. When they came out on stage with his 10-string touch guitar strapped on, most of the audience was looking around at each other saying, "What the hell is THAT? Where's Johnson's regular band?" As soon as they started playing, though, everyone was instantly won over. Trey played a solo during "Trail of Tears" and the encore/jam ("Zap"). He got thunderous ovations at both shows. He also played a third solo at the Austin show. These were such enjoyable shows, but it was hard to decide who to watch! EJ has such amazing speed and technique. TG's playing looks effortless. His vibratos, slides, and two handed bass/counterpoint playing made EJ's music come to life in a completely different way than I'd ever heard before. Jerry Marotta's back beat and texture filled out this highly talented trio very nicely. They all appeared to be really enjoying themselves, and that energy drove the music and reflected in the crowd as well. Overall, this was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Bravo to EJ/TG/JM, a.k.a. "The Vortexan Session" for rocking the Lone Star State.
