Caron" Subject: ITWOP/Lizard/Islands reissues hi everyone For those disappointed by DGM being out of stock of the mini-gatefold reissues: I suggest checking out major record stores. I had no trouble finding them in Montreal. In fact, I couldn't resist and picked up all 3 of them... After listening to everything, congratulations are in order. The sound of all three is stunning. In particular, Islands has a clarity and impact (Formentera Lady, wow!) that is hard to believe. On "The Sailor's tale", just when Fripp's chord (?) solo starts, you can hear the mellotron coming in at an almost imperceptible level because the noise floor is so low. A direct A/B comparison between the ITWOP reissue and my beloved german vinyl pressing (undoubtedly my most precious record) revealed that the reissue is right up there and superior in many respects (through my fair quality equipement at least). Fripp's playing and recording of the mellotron on ITWOP defines the instrument and is unsurpassed IMHO. As far as packaging is concerned, the ITWOP reissue is indistinguishable (except for size!) from the original. Anybody who has dabbled in color reproduction knows how difficult it is to achieve perfect color matching when reproducing. On the other hand, the Lizard mini-gatefold lacks contrast and definition...but hey, it sounds spectacular... Quite simply, words are unable to convey what these records mean to me. With a few chosen ones, like Abbey Road, Joy Division's Closer and Television's Marquee Moon, LTIA and Red, these are part of who I am and the music I make. aWc Antoine W. I particularly like Fernando Kabusacki's "Welcome to my coffee house" as well as material from Nilton Gappo. http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/9984/index.html The sound quality of the Elephant Tape RealAudio files is far superior to most audio streaming on the internet. I have almost no trouble receiving it through my ordinary 56k modem. Wow! Very nice, and does focus on other areas of Crimson (influences of Peter Sinfield?). Great remastering job, great packaging, all-around great. Has anyone else noticed the extra footage beginning at 10:13 of the title track? I like these little glimpses into like at Crimson; reminds me a bit of the Gil Evans footage from the Miles Davis/ Gil Evans box. Botti played trumpet on "Brand New Day" when Sting was on Saturday Night Live recently. Haven't seen many reviews of BLUE Nights here, so I thought I'd provide a short one. These guys absolutely COOK! The first CD starts with an intro from Bruford (a la Crimson), then the others join in and eventually segue into Etude Revisited. Then follows a gorgeous version of Palace of Pearls, and the funky Original Sin. Other highlights include Picnic on Vesuvius (which, as many know, began as an improv and later became a composition after the band learned it from a fan's recording), Cerulean Sea, and Torn's "3 Minutes of Pure Entertainment" (actually 11). If you liked BLUE, you'll love this. (Incidentally, the first CD is bright yellow, and the second is red, like Peter Gabriel's "Secret World Live." Perhaps Tony is anxiously awaiting PG's next tour, should the new album ever come out.) :) I'm now anxiously awaiting the Waters of Eden CD. I think Tony is going to try to come to St. Louis in June--hope to see some ETers there!! --Andy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 16:52:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Justin Weinberg Subject: Rune Song Is there anyone else out there who can't stop listening to the last two minutes or so of "Rune Song" from Trey's new album? When I first bought this CD, I wasn't fond of this track. Robert Fripp's contribution is not very noticeable due to Steve Lillywhite, the producer, wanting a more accessible guitarist for Gabriel's first album outside of Genesis. Things would change, of course, with the following ones, with Fripp producing. Hunter, by the way, was a great rock guitarist, you may listen to him in Lou Reed records, for instance ("Rock and Roll Animal" comes to mind). And most people are aware of the shocking news that the special edition packaging is practically out of print already! DGM have already run out! So if any of you out there are wondering whether or not you should get them, stop wondering and get them now!!! If you wait too long, you won't be able to get them. If you get them now and later decide you don't want them (unlikely), you'll be able to sell them for more than you paid for them, believe me! I was quite stunned when the folks at Caroline (who released these in the US) told me the day of the release that they expected all three titles to sell out by the end of the next day. They further said the situation was the same world wide. So how did this deplorable situation happen? The truth of it all will no doubt be very frustrating to all true Crimson fans. In explaining this situation, I'm assuming the situation with Caroline also holds true for Virgin. First, because Caroline still had stock of the E.G. releases of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands, retailers themselves were prevented from placing any advance orders for the new remasters. I was told by my Caroline rep that if I were to place a pre-order for these, then instead of holding my order, the warehouse would instead ship me the existing stock of the old E.G. releases. Well, I definitely didn't want that! So I actually could not place a pre-order for these until about a week or so before their release (nor could any other retailer). By that time it was too late for any retailer's order to effect the actual quantity being pressed. So how did Caroline and Virgin determine what sort of quantities to press of these limited editions? According to my rep at Caroline they made a judgement based on the amount of sales those titles had in the past year. No doubt many of you already see the serious flaw in their logic. The flaw was that they totally failed to take into consideration the strong communication channels that exist between Crimson fans because of ET, DGM and other sources online and off. The simple fact is that almost every Crimson fan has known for more than a year that these remasters were coming out! And for that reason any sales of these titles in the past year have been extremely limited. Regrettably this was errantly interpreted as a general lack of interest in these titles. How frustrating! If there's a silver lining to this dark cloud, it's that my rep at Caroline said they learned their lesson with these releases and intend to order much large quantities of the next batch - Lark's Tongue, Starless, Red. And if you're wondering when those are coming out, I've been told it will be September. Then Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair will come the following February. (ItCotCK, ItWoP, Lizard & Islands). The mini-album packaging is so well done, I can't say enough good things about it. As Mark S. mentioned in an earlier newsletter, all the upc codes are easily removable from the mini-sleeves. The great point about the Islands remaster is that both versions of the cover art have been integrated into one package. The nebula (E.G. editions) cover is used on the outside of the sleeve. And the colored blotches (Atlantic/Island) cover is used on the booklet and on the inside of the gatefold. Each release has an excellently done booklet with reprints of clippings/articles/reviews from various music periodicals along with excellent photos pertaining to that particular album's release. As far as the guy who was torn between whether to get Wake & Lizard next (way back three n-letters ago), go for Lizard. If you liked Islands, you will like this very much too. Then go out and pick up Wake. I highly recommend any of these re-releases to anyone who is loves this band as much as I do. As well as others who don't have a clue to the first. Now, I can't wait for the next batch to be released. Dominick in NH ------------------------------ End of Elephant Talk Digest #652 ********************************
