Not very good news from Paris : The tickets for the Paris-Olympia show costs between 200FF and 400FF, i.e. 20# and 40#, so it's about the same than 30 - 60 dollars !!! The Olympia is probably the most expensive place in Paris (a little less than the Opera !). Five years ago, for the "THRAK" tour at the Paris-Zenith, it was only 200 FF ! It sounds great but I REALLY cannot afford to actually join the Collecters Club! I am a 17 year old student in a poorly paid job trying to save up for a summer holiday and am really short of cash but would love to get hold of a copy of the CD. I don't know if I am sending this e-mail to the right place (I hope I am, only please don't be too mad if I am wrong!) but I would be eternally grateful if you could e-mail me and tell me where I stand on purchasing this particular CD but not joining the Collecters Club. It's not that I don't want to join the Collecters Club - I'd love to! - only I really cannot afford to at this time in my life. Please e-mail me, hopefully with some good news. Funny, I remember getting ISLANDS on vinyl in the mid-eighties and flipping for the tryptic of "Formentera Lady">"Sailors Tale">"The Letters". This combination, that took up a whole side, seemed unbeatable at the time. And then, "Ladies Of The Road"! The only apparent weakness seemed to me to be "Islands" and "Song Of The Seagull". I bought them in release order, so I had Poseidon and Lizard, before Islands. Lizard has it's moments though. The lavish artwork attracted me. Of course Poseidon is lavish, too. I love all three. Picking a next purchase between the above two CD's is a heads/tails propostion. Each offers something a little different. Lizard has Jon Anderson on it. That being said I have heard several players(Pat Metheney being one) who get the required sounds out of the boxes with the desired chops. While i like the "feel" of my Les Paul much better then the G-808 guitar i got with the early boxes, my own experience is that the g-synths are an added tool for the creative player to use, not the whole ball of wax as some might desire. just my 2cents worth "What did i ever do before i owned a MAC" Bill Chachkes ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 13:48:46 -0600 (CST) From: TheMincer at webtv dot net (Ric Wilson) Subject: A Strobe Light? Aloha, Having checked out "I Have A Dream" by itself I am totally puzzled. This is a very haunting and beautiful song. The lyrics are neither offensive nor inspiring to me. They are generally a list of events in the latter part of the 20th century. While if one gets thoughtful about each item it could be depressing, I find a list of such things to be too far away from every day life to really affect me emotionally without somehow personalizing it. You empathize when you look at a news photo of a single victim but an event is an abstract. The one hopeful phrase (Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream) followed by mention of Rodney King and OJ as symbols of our time has a melancholy note of irony. It says to me "Look were we were going. How did we end up here?" The last line being "One giant step for mankind" can be taken as bitterly cynical. Yet another irony, in that the moonlanding away from this context could be argued as one of the most positive events of the century. Without the "controversy" I probably would not have examined these lyrics one way or another. Unless lyrics are embarassingly bad I generally listen to the sound of the music with the voice being an integrated instrument and just don't pay attention to the words (although Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" can always make me cry, I think it's his loss more than the actual lyric.) I would assume the nature of Crimson music would tend to draw listeners who are more music oriented than lyric oriented. I have read some laughable reviews of Crimson and other artists where the writer was "dancing to the words" and missed a great musical performance entirely. I have to assume Adrian is right in considering the song's removal to be an editorial decision on Fripp's part more than being pushed around by the label. Even Fripp has defended Virgin as offering helpful advice more than dictating a change in the album. The idea that Crimson music could be dictated by a label is ridiculous. It is hard to think of many Crimson pieces that wouldn't scare the hell out of the average record executive if he knew what they were doing. Since the song still appears as the the end of Lark's IV it doesn't hold water that the lyrics were too much for the faint hearted critic's community. I beleive Fripp must have had misgivings about the song in the first place and was finally convinced when Virgin balked. I know it is dangerous to assume the workings of Mr. Fripp's mind because when we basement dwellers do so we are almost always humiliatingly wrong. Even so, I have to think the removal, right or wrong, was an artistic decision. I will have to hear the whole album before I can make an evaluation of this decision. Listening to the song on its own and Adrian's description of its place in the overall set I think it might have been a nice touch. Maybe when they remaster it for the absolutely no foolin' difinitive version in five years they can stick it back in. For now it makes a tasty preview. Please excuse me if it not, for I am not a fellow reader of the ET newsletter (not being a KC or RF fan ;-). I have seen an "Islands" reedition in a well-known French store (the FNAC). It has a special gatefold sleeve as indicated on the ET and DGM web sites about the remastered edition, but there isn't "remastered" written on it. And when I've asked to the FNAC guys, they looked up in their computer database and answered me "no, this isn't remastered". So, what is the truth ? Is this really the remastered version or just a special packaging ? Thanks a lot Antoine Pitrou. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 16:27:22 -0500 From: "Mark Stansbery" Subject: 30th Anniversary Editions / Islands Just a short post of thanks and praise. First, Thanks to Toby, Dan, and all concerned at ET for their efforts keeping this forum up, running, and useful. Second, A word of praise for whomever at DGM has designed the packaging for the 30 Anniversary CD's. They are great even down to the smallest detail. I really appreciate that the UPC code stickers are easily removable, leaving the cover art intact and undamaged. So often these UPC codes end up just about destyroying the effect of the artist's design. Oh yeah, the remastered sound is wonderful as well! Anyone who still thinks Islands 'sucks' should get the new edition & turn it up! Mark Stansbery ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 23:07:36 PST From: "Nomad Stem" Subject: "I Have A Dream" - Another Perspective I had remembered reading Steve Ball's comments on the new KC CD in his diary and went to look it up. Here is what he said: "Thursday January 27 12:05, round midnight. My eyes are heavy, almost shut as I type these words. A quick backwards chronology of my day: A delightful dinner prepared by BillR and Frankie Sundsten for RobertF, DavidS, CurtG, TobinB, GuyW and myself. Ahh.... home cooked food is such a rare treat in my so- called life these days. During dinner, some engaging conversations about 'eye of the needle' circa 1991, the process of painting, and a particular Ballistic outburst during a recent (2 years ago) SGC weekend retreat. Much more interesting conversation than I can honorably replay here. Following dinner, a listening session featuring the new KC CD. Yikes. Another massive milestone in the history of recorded music. It left me speechless, tapping my foot, and wanting to hear it again. My only initial negative reaction: some of the words have already dated this otherwise timeless material." Now, admittedly the following is conjecture, but I think it quite likely that the negative reaction was directed toward the "I Have A Dream" lyrics we've all been discussing lately. Steve's diary entry offers another issue with them that hasn't been expressed elsewhere, but might, considering the presence of Robert Fripp at this gathering, have been discussed with RF at this playback. I believe RF and SB have a very close relationship and perhaps it was not just Declan at Virgin's response, but also Steve Ball's response to these lyrics that further solidified RF's own feelings about them. As for dating the material, Adrian Belew would have done so intentionally. After all, he was writing about an historical event, and purposely so. That doesn't mean the dating is bad, although Steve Ball's comment implies that the dating of the material was a negative. Personally when I listen to a lot of Beatles music the lyrics often dates the material, but that doesn't make me like the music any less, and it hasn't proven to have made it any less timeless. I live in Melbourne and I have observed on numerous occasions that as soon as the major CD shops stock recent Crimson material (such as Thrak and especially the ProjeKcts box-set), they are sold out within a few days (I keep missing out on the ProjeKcts). This indicates to me that there is a fairly large following of the current incarnation of KC at least in Melbourne (and also Sydney, I would think) to warrant the inclusion of Australia in the next tour near the Pacific region. Surely Australia isn't *that* far away to travel to in terms of tour costs? I'm sure I speak for many other Australian KC fans when I say I that wish to see live Crimson more than any other current band in the world.
