Although I was once a regular ET subscriber, now I only drop by (every-once-in-awhile), so I don't know if I have the "right" to post this.... ...but, I stoppe by today, via the website, and must say I find it interesting to see evidence of folks still mentioning, let alone debating, about the possible "satanic" influences to anyone's music. But anyone so concerned, in either direction, would do well to watch (study!) PBS's FRONTLINE special, APOCALYPSE!" from a couple month's back. I have watched it three or four times (i taped it). But anyone can go to PBS's website at www.pbs.org, and then on to the Frontline pages for more info. In just two hours, no longer than the average concert, they lay out the whole history of apocalytic thinking in the West. You will learn things that you probably never knew and having learned those things, unless you come to the learning with extreme biases (which would delimit your ability to truly learn), I will predict that you will no longer suffer confusion nor concern about whether ANYONE's music is "satanic". But you have got to watch the WHOLE show -- hey, wouldn't TWO hours be worth the time if it could clear up 2,500 years of misinformation and lower your anxiety levels?! And by the way, the old wisdom, "the truth shall set you free" is appropriate here. -JOHN ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 00:56:01 +0100 From: "Vannuccio-MP Records" Subject: Guest: Trey Gunn Dear Sirs, M.P. The comparison of bootlegging to rape is not an actual quote from Robert Fripp. It was a hyperbolic distillation of old edicts he has made about tapers engaging the musician in a nonconsentual act. It has been so long since I have stopped scrolling through these statments when they appear that I cannot say for sure whether Fripp ever made the rape comparison, or if that was a leap I made on my own due to the fact that it is the ultimate nonconsentual act. I apologize to anyone offended by my casual use of the word and would again point out that what I said should not be construed as a RF quote. This is hipocritical of me, but my main concern was the use of a King Crimson newsletter to preach the virtues of everyone sharing their bootlegs. It just had this sort of "Wayne and Garth neo hippie right on the music belongs to all of us" attitude that has got to drive Fripp nuts. Once again. You know he reads this. You know his position on who owns his music. You know we as a whole will be vilified because a few of us are trying to set up a bootleg web ring. I am guilty of buying bootlegs myself so I have no right to judge the action. I just don't think this is the forum for it. Any opinions on the "I Had a Dream" issue. I am surprised to see that RF is concerned about bad reviews or fan reaction. He had the stones to release the ProjeKcts. How much harm can one depressing ditty do? I think if they feel the cut is weak the band should remove it. If it doesn't fit within the flow of the album artistically and they think the album is better without it remove it. But I do not think they should remove it because the label is afraid it might be fodder for bad reviews. I don't think there are that many reviewers out there who get KC anyway. No matter what they do, you can count on KC getting slagged by most of the press. As far as the fans are concerned, Crimson is critic proof. As far as new fans go, in today's world of gangsta rappers yelling "fuck" in your face every three bars, what lyric could possibly be offensive? If the content is too grim it will probably be praised for being honest, gritty and cutting edge. I would like the opportunity to hear the song and love it or hate it. I don't believe KC would have put it on the finished album if it was no good. Maybe Fripp didn't like it in the first place but deferred to Adrian and is now rethinking the inclusion because the label balked. An old John Wetton interview added to ET interviews mentioned the UK reunion cd. Does anyone know the status of this project? It sounded like it was all but finished two years ago and then it dropped out of sight. Has it been shelved for some reason? It sounded very intrigueing at the time they were working on it. As a whole, I like all of KC's music. Some songs I liked right away--others I needed to listen to a few times to catch the nuances. My favorite KC music belongs to Fripp-Wetton-Bruford era. In stark contrast to Mr. Fripp's preferences, I enjoy the over-powering rythym section accented by Fripp's playing. I especially like "Providence," "Starless and Bible Black," and "Fracture." As for the more recent KC/fractals work--I find the Projekcts Box set very pleasing and stimulating. Some of the music is meditative--some very hard-driving--and others a tad out there in some strange universe. Make no mistake--KC/Projekcts are not "party music" designed for the casual listener (to my personal delight). But when I am alone or driving in my car--i crank up the volume and become lost in my own little world for a while. Interestingly enough, taking the ill-gotten product (the original bootleg purchased) and making hundreds of copies of it is something of a "punishment" for being a low-down, thieving bastard... Some of the Phish fans I know advocate this sort of "punishment" for the bun-wads who try to scam cash from people by selling copies of Phish performances. Phish doesn't mind giving away copies of their performances, but they really get upset if you charge for them (I may get hoist on my rhetorical petard for that paraphrasing of what they permit... but I think it is close enough for rock n roll...). Since music encoded in a digital form can be copied ad infinitum with no loss of fidelity, we could all be real "turds" to the bootleggers by buying exactly one copy of a boot and sending a CD copy of it to each member of the ET list. And we could do it with impunity -- what would the bootlegger be able to do? Sue us all for copyright violations? If the daisy chain were big enough, we could make KC boots an unattractive financial proposition for the bootleggers... (maybe) This doesn't answer the issue of putting cash into the pockets of the members of the incarnation of KC that was the subject of the bootleg... maybe we could just all send Robert a buck or two on our own -- kind of like musical shareware... >I confess I've >bought a couple of bootlegs myself so I can't say I am without blame, but to >openly call for setting up a bootleg web in a forum where you know he's going >to read it is at best insensitive to Fripp and at worst an insult to >everything he stands for. I've noticed a common thread among many entries in the digest in my short time reading them. The resistance to change and the denial of that resistance. Taking a broad overview, I really give Fripp some major props, yo. This is an artist who has made the absolute minimum compromises one can make, I believe, and remain a professional (it's his living) musician. 72-74 was breaking, in the music industry's lingo. Here come the arenas. Industrial metal way ahead of its time. That band was awesome in the true sense of the word. However it wasn't what Fripp had envisioned. Just listen To the final chord of "Exiles" on The Bremen session, then flip to Providence. As delicate as a mellotron has ever sounded to pomp-rock bluster in less than 2 years. "Success", yes, but for whom? He was outta there. His work with Eno during that time continued his artistic vision without apeing his old band. Then the producing experience gained. Guest spots with pop stars. Frippertronics. The "rock gamelan" guitars and cymbal-less drum band. Andy Summers. Guitar Craft. The "double trio", more a concept than a reality, gamely attempted. This band recalled a bunch of Crimson past and brought it to the present in thunderous refocus. I saw them twice and when I say thunderous--well almost 5 years later my ears have finally stopped ringing! And the projeKcts! How perfectly consistent with Fripp's musical vision! " Hey guys I think I hear some music out there calling us. Let's get together when we can and see if it comes to us!" And now , music that only Crimson can play has apparently appeared. And with it change has occourred. Pat Mastellotto is a commercially succsessful drummer who has decided to persue learning to play some interesting new music making equipment in an effort to move forward- do something new. Trey Gunn-an out of the mainstream Instrument and a craftie- This is Crimson, people. No, not your Crimson,or mine. But Music's. Remember ;" Is this true?" I say yes!Of course, the quality of the music always depends on the quality of our listening. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 12:59:07 -0500 From: Warren Melnick Subject: Deja Vroom and DVD players in general I bought Deja Vroom almost a year ago and have never had a problem with it at all. I have been playing it on a Sony 300 player (stand alone, not DVD-ROM). Since many people here seem to be taking the plunge into DVD I thought I would take a small bit of bandwidth and mention some things about buying DVD players. There are a number of things to look for when buying a DVD player. The first of which is compatibility. If you can get your hands on a copy of "The Matrix" take it (and a copy of Deja Vroom) to the store when looking at DVD players. These 2 DVDs seem to test the DVD player to the extreme. If you can access 21st century on Deja Vroom and follow the white rabbit on the Matrix DVD you can be pretty sure the DVD player is going to handle most DVDs out there. Second thing to consider: What other media will you be playing? Will you want to play CDs and VideoCDs that you have burned yourself? If so be sure that the DVD player you are buying has dual lasers. Single Laser DVD players (Toshiba, some mid and high-range Sony, etc) will not play CDRs well. Burn a CD or a VCD and tak it with you as well. Do you want to play DVDs from other regions or perhaps CDRWs? This pretty much limits you to the Apex 600A off the shelf in the US. The current version which is being replaced as I am writing this not only plays CDRWs but has a "secret" menu which allows you to change the region code and defeat Macrovision among other things. Circuit City has these for $179 but supposedly the current batch has the extra menu locked out. You can find these on EBay for about $260. However I do not know if these will play Deja Vroom or The Matrix properly. I can let you know this in a few days when mine arrives. :-) There are other players in other countries that either have hidden menus or can be easily modified. I believe there is a Wharfedale in the UK that is selling like crazy since the region control was found. Remember that region locking is just a move by the movie industry to limit your choices! For information on opening up the DVD arena, see http://www.opendvd.org. Don't forget to match the DVD player to the receiver you will be connecting it to. Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS can be supplied is a digital bitstream in either or both of coax (RCA plug) or optical (TOSLINK) or they can be decoded onboard the DVD player itself and supplied as 6 analog RCA outputs. Be sure the outputs on the DVD player match the inputs on your receiver! If you are going to buy all new units, try to buy a receiver with lots of digital inputs because more and more of your components are likely to be digital as time goes on. Hope this helps! At a scantly attended press conference at the venerable Oyld Angleesh hall of justice, Stale Barley, officials representing the Office of the Inspectors of Her Magesty's Effluent accused the not famous and not even infamous musician of committing a "pattern of offensive offenses uncommonly common" pertaining to the "writing, recording and foisting" upon a gullible, partially lobotomized public "dreary music" consisting of "dismal and pathetic chord sequences," "depressing, dark and unappealing dirges" with "confusing, oblique, esoteric or meaningless titles" of a "possible titanic nature" in 10/16, 5/8. 20/32, or Howdy Doody Time. The assembled were then inflicted with a three and a half second sample from "I'm So Bummed Out I'm Going to Make Art, Run It Up the Flagpole and See if It Flies!" (lyrics by Mondrian Bayou) from the new Qing Conniption record, the EruCKtation of Spite, after which a respected member of the music press not named Garbarini quivered and quaked and clutched at herself while her sister made a joke about her mental health. More shocking was that two ET'ers were called as witnesses in Fragg's offense, which, according to the quaint rituals of English justice, required them, when not answering questions, to be bound, gagged and imprisoned in a wicker cage that would be set afflame by a bewigged incompetent if Fragg was found innocent. Excerpts from the transcript, found in the jammed paper dustbin attached to the Stale Barley photocopying machine, follow: Honorable Lord Justice Fantod Wigglesworth: "Mr. Fragg, this pattern of yours has been traced to your first recording, The Inimitable Slag of Piles, Piles and Fragg, in which you appear in a photograph that, when rubbed with a solution of down market instant coffee and badly steamed milk, reveals the words aHoy, hoy,' a vile Kabbalistic chant attributed to Hermes Thrice-ridiculous. Did you believe, even for a minute, that Her Magesty's Inspectors would let you could get away with such sordidly morbid mumbo-jumbo?" Sir Planks Constant, for Mr. Fragg: That was only in the specially printed American edition, your Lordship, and all five copies of which were specially printed in the expectation of vast and effortless profit, a generous portion of which, your Lordship, would have been paid to Inland Revenue, if the recordings hadn't been purchased in error and used as shotgun targets by a right-wing militia notable for their imaginative violence and eccentric sense of humor. (What was that? Mr. Fragg, t you're not permitted to speak in these proceedings but if seek my attention you'll have to...What was that? Fudge? They caught you licking fudge? What does that have to do with easy money?) Sir Avagardros Number, for Her Magesty's Effluent, questioning witness Jiffy the Affluent Shrew, an occasional poster to ET: You expect this court of old, dodgy, stupid old Englishmen to believe, even for a minute, that you, an extremely wealthy and influencial manufacturer of genetically altered transplantable kidney pies, enjoy the accused's simpering soupcon of salacious swill? Jiffy: Yup. Sir Number, interviewing Zed Night (Dr. Z), "You maintained a radio program of questionable music on a non-profit station that was obliterated due to a lack of funds while you were simultaneously editing a science fiction magazine that published dubious fantasies based on Grateful Dead songs, and yet, you persist in expressing incorrect and dangerous opinions on the accused's torpid tunes, dismal drones, soporific symphonica" Night: People said the same about Miles Davis. They said the same about the works of Bartok, Stravinsky, Scriabin, Polenc, Beethoven, Schuman, Brahms, Berg, Webern and Schoenberg. And, despite what you want to believe, words can hurt. I consider Rick Astley a personal friend, and many, many, many times, Rick and I have discussed how people who want art to please them can become angry, and seem foolish, when they blame the art or the artist for doing something they don't like. Sir Number: But we are speaking, sir, of Norbert Fragg. Night: Is this Courtroom XIV? His Lordship: Know by all men present that this is Courtroom XIII. Will the bailiff direct the witness to Courtroom XIV, where I believe Mr. Astley is accused of being too puny. Bailiff: Pardon, Your Lordship. Mr. Fragg is being accused of not being Mr. Astley. aE might make piddling announcements between songs, but ol' Fraggy woddn't play the songbird. His Lordship: Are you saying that this man isn't being who and what we say he is? How perfectly awful! Bailiff: Precisely, Your Lordship. His Lordship: Court is hereby adjourned so the Court may obtain Mr. Astley's autograph. You know, my daughter adored him before she went on anti-depressants. Made her lose her libido, thank the Lord.... A bootlegger caught in the UK?. As far as I know, the BPI are in London and it is UK news not USA news, BPI not FBI. A vast hoard suggests the bootlegger is (was) a major dealer in Krim boots, maybe lots of other artistes too?. I've seen the odd dealer at record fairs and cassette sellers behind market stalls, they seem to offer a good range of what people call prog rock. Music magazine articles I've read state that Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles etc are the most bootlegged artists. If the bootlegger lost all stock, do you have all of it Robert? What other artists are there? Are there bootlegs of your solo career, projects and string quintet for example? Like most fans I hope we get lots more CC releases, especially now. At least the BPI bust resulted in the vast hoard going to the rightful owner. The BPI and bootleggers related to Krim seems to have been in the media an awful lot recently. I remember posts on the guestbook and one guy complaining that he'd been spammed by what he thought may have been some boot dealer. Only a month or two ago there was a long letter in Record Collector magazine and before that there was a documentary on the television about the BPI working to stop the bootleg industry, seems they have recently cleaning up!. I guess Robert you must be pleased and surprised at the delivery of such a vast hoard (as you put it)?. This has to be the communication mentioned in your diary recently?. So, for us real enthusiasts that don't burn Robert, this must surely be the best news collecting wise since the inception of the club. Over to you Robert, Great Deceiver box set 2 perhaps?, or more 1969 shows?. Please share your news and good fortune with us all. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 10:30:19 -0500 From: Carlos Pacheco Subject: Screensavers Hi crims: I"m looking for screensaver about KC in Internet, the covers of cds are amazing and originals look like paintings May I help in this subject Bye Carlos Pacheco Raguz ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #637 ********************************
