Granted its live, and Lake is in the band, but its still SORT of a cover. Its really amazing in its way, and while the group note_matching intense part of the song was shortened, the song still has the amazing wall of intensity (IMO) which is what really gave the original its power, moreso than note frenzy. If you get a chance at the tape thats floating about of the Lake band, pick it up for this song (and there are other crimson live covers and Lake stuff on there too). -Lewis lewis at tacky dot cs dot olemiss dot edu [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: 23 Oct 1992 00:38:00 -0500 From: MOONLIT KNIGHT Subject: Crimson worries Folks, I'm worried. Reading the excerpts from 1984 interviews (thanks are due there) I realized how much I've been living with the expectation of the new band. I'm like, "OK, that was then, a long time ago now!" Folks, it's hard to imagine Gabriel going on the road with other than Tony Levin, and that's going to happen soon and it's going to go on for a long time. I mean, in 1982 he was furiously dividing his time, one assumes, touring with both ... but the Gabriel tour is going to go everywhere, Third World as well as Japan, starting in November. When the hell is Crimson going to get together? Did Belew ever finish his tour and take his vacation and get together with Fripp? We know that once it happens it can happen fast. I guess the last thing he said was that he would like to tour Japan as Crimson in spring '93 before recording or touring elsewhere. Belew went to Japan (I asked him myself if he was going) so support there must be really strong. I found Fripp's complaints from 1984 really interesting and I could understand them. I mean, he sets the parameters and then is letting the other guys go. The thing is, he is a bandleader; but not quite in the same way that Miles was. He is caught between being just one of the guys and being like Miles, who was older and brought young musicians up and though he let the band play, he was always teaching them and letting them grow, but was always in a clearly superior position, an elder. (I'm talking especially about 80's Miles). I think that the big frustration with Bruford and Fripp is simply that Bruford is his equal and isn't afraid to pull in the opposite direction. The other guys developed alot and of course ganged up on Fripp, but they were more willing in a way. Bill can sound a little arrogant when talking about it to Anil, but it's true: the band has become more and more "smiling Americans". I mean, Jerry is a great drummer, but like Tony he won't emerge from the sideman role completely. And as we know, Ade certainly felt like he had to grow into equal status with these more "intellectual" players. I could see it very clearly in his performance: despite the fact that he wants to push his solo career, he's really got a dual nature. Though he loves to be the center of attention, the screaming of the people up front seemed to wear on him as the show went on. Clearly there is part of him that is going to be more comfortable in a band. All of this is not to enforce the cliche of Fripp as evil controller; but one can see how he and Bill simply can't exist together. Bob doesn't insist on control, but he does insist on boundaries, which Bill was always breaking. He describes himself as the most schizo player because he has to break up into pieces the rhythms coming >from three schizo guitars -- so it's no wonder Bob feels threatened by Bill's refusal to just keep time, or at least keep time compatibly for Fripp's playing. Enough -- where is the best place right now to write to these guys? Care of what, Virgin? Would a reformed Crimson play old tunes? I would like to see them continue to do "Larks Tounge II", in addition to "Sheltering Sky". You know, when I think about how they usually abandon the old material, I realize I can live without seeing "Elephant Talk" and stuff like that. There are only a few tunes I really couldn't stand not seeing. Maybe "Waiting Man" and "Sleepless". God, I used to be such a Discipline freak, but now I'm getting more interested in the other two. Yet all the songs I've mentioned except "Larks Tounge" are unimaginable without Bruford. Sigh ... going back to the beginning of this ramble, nothing will satisfy me until we hear the new sound which will save the world and predict music to come ... I hope they can still do it. I was watching MTV a while back, and they had a half-hour documentary on Jimi Hendrix. They had asked a lot of guitarists their opinion on Hendrix (i.e. Clapton, Vai, Beck) and strangely enough, the first musician interviewed is... Robert Fripp! He discusses a time in '69 (I believe) when they first met. Before they shook hands, Jimi insists Robert to "Shake my right hand... it's closer to my heart." At the closing of the "rock"umentary, they talked to Adrian Belew, who idolizes Hendrix, it seems. He was one of Adrian's inspirations to experiment with the guitar. Belew mentions this after raving about Hendrix's use of feedback as part of the guiar, not a bad thing. Anyway, it was an interesting half-hour. Thought you'd like to know. --Jeremy "Timshel!" Here's some info provided by Michael Sheehan, from both the Genesis newsletter "Paperlate" and the King Crimson newsletter "Discipline": >From Paperlate: Also, I wanted to clarify something I said in my recent post about Levin--don't anybody think that I'm real chummy with the guy, or anything. It ain't like we sit around discussing hair-tonic formulas or anything, but he does live in Woodstock which is near Albany, NY, my hometown, and he plays in a bar band called Uncle Funk--they played at a small bar here in town and I got to talk to him for a while, as well as Jerry Marotta. I also know a woman he used to date and a musician friend of his. I wanted to clarify so I didn't just sound like a name-dropper :). >From Discipline: Hello all. Since there's been all this talk about Tony Levin, I thought I'd chime in with a personal reminiscence or two. One is, Uncle Funk is an assortment of fellas who live in and about Woodstock, New York, which is where Levin makes his home. They played up here in Albany, New York about a year and a half ago in a small bar, at which time Jerry Marotta was playing drums! There wasn't even a very big crowd, so after the show I just walked right up to the stage and chatted for a while with Tony, and bought Jerry Marotta a beer (!). Needless to say, as a rabid Crimson and Peter Gabriel fan, I was hard put to contain myself. Sad to say, Uncle Funk is a not-particularly-noteworthy band, despite its famous members. Pretty much an area bar band, and Tony (and presumably, Jerry) plays with them when he's got the time. Another aside... a woman of my acquaintance dated Tony for a year or so, and a friend of mine has his bass from the ToaPP tour (the yellow one withe the logo). His dad knows Tony and Tony gave it and a small amp to the guy for his birthday one year. You should see it... under the E string the wood is worn away a good 1/8-1/4 inch, under the other strings also, but not so deep... must be from all those "Sleepless" nights! Well, enough about me. Jeez, you'd think with all these odd, random connections, I'd at least have been able to score backstage passes by now-- I'll never forgive my friend for breaking up with Levin! :) The bandleader of Uncle Funk is named Joe Beismer (sp?), and Levin and Marotta fill in when available. *note 8 - Armando Gallo's books on Gabriel (titled "Peter Gabriel") and Genesis ("I Know What I Like" and "From One Fan To Another") feature pictures of Levin on tour with Gabriel from 1977-87. Levin was also featured in some magazines, including "Electronic Musician" from around 1987 concerning The Chapman Stick, and the Dec. 1982 issue of "Musician", where Levin interviewed himself. *note 9 - I've tried to stay away from bootlegs due to the amount of them, but this release, "Games Without Words", from Gabriel features early studio demos of several songs from Gabriel's third LP. Levin's contributions are much different than what actually ended up on that LP, thus the mention here. Tony Levin fans may be interested in some of the tracks on this bootleg that have never appeared anywhere else to my knowledge, and the raw version of "I Don't Remember."
