Hmm, my email about Brufords last Yes appearance didn't seem to make it to issue #624 probably in favor of the above response. In my unposted post I mentioned that 1991's Union album and tour was the last Bruford Yes appearance. And this indeed was his last Yes appearance. While the Symphonic Music of Yes is a great album with Yes songs and other Yes members, it is by no means a Yes album. It is simply another orchestral rock album that happens to be spearheaded by then-former members of the band. Somehow they got Jon Anderson in on two songs ("All Good People" begin the second). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 15:49:56 -0500 From: mike coffey Subject: Canadians in DGM club Yes, we are here. It is expensive (with the exchange rate), slow (usually 6 weeks) and the duty is a killer. When I ordered 7 disks, roughly 15.00$ U.S. each, the duty was 35$ Canadian. I use the postal way, because you're going to have to pay duty any way you get it shipped. With the Canadian dollar worth about .66 U.S. dollars, it's better to go to somewhere like HMV, if you live in a big city like Toronto. The downtown store carries the DGM line and the prices are reasonable. But if it's something you really want, the Club is a good source no matter what the price, and Amy has always been a great help. Anyone know anything >about a connection between the two? Did I dream this? If so, I must get >more of a life... > Robin Trower was the opening act on the Great Deceiver tour. According to a contemporary interview, he was taking guitar lessons from Fripp at the time. This was fairly evident in his next release, "For Earth Below". Fair listening, but not as good an album as "Bridge Of Sighs" in my opinion. I really think that was Trower's peak, in the studio at least. Sad when you consider "Bridge" was his second album. Don't get me wrong, I really like the guy and I've seen him several times, it's just most of his albums are forgettable to me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 18:54:07 -0500 From: Dave & Racqui Subject: Ps,Flea, joke,ESC&TG,flash,Ted Hey gang~ 1-Sounds like the consensus is that P1 & 4 are the favs. Must agree. 2-Who is Flea? jeesh 3-As far as the back of P4 being a joke, I think you're reaching. You can see another (black) cord going from the floor toward the wall behind the obvious wallplate w/the white plug. 4-There is no 4 5-I have recently seen Europa String Chior w/Tony Geballe in Baltimore. Tony Geballe is always the consummate professional, imho. He's studied music/guitar on more continents than most of us have set our foot upon. So smooth. The ESC was great as well. I had only ever heard the music from them on SGH, which I enjoyed greatly. The last piece of the gig was all of them playing together. At the end, the crowd stood SILENT, unsure if they had ended, for approx 45 seconds. Not that 45 secs is a long time, but for the band to stand quietly watching the audience, was a bit weird. The music's fantastic. Markus must play Warr guitar in his sleep. And Cathy's electric viola....like an green acrylic shell of a viola. Pretty crazy. I'm not much of a reviewer, but check this out! 6-Flash photography....People are still talking about this? I haven't read ET for a yr or so and that thread is still kicking. I was really bummed to find out I can't get a copy of "Live at Jacksonville -1972" anywhere. I was even willing to join the DGM collectors club but was told that they no longer have copies and aren't sure if they'll be making any more. Can someone please help !!! I'm willing to pay or trade for an original or copy (CD-R or mini-disc would be great). For example I myself own bootleg copies of ITCOCK, In the Wake of Poseidon, Starless and Bible Black, Red, all 80's Crimson, VROOM, The Night Watch, Epitaph (CD 1 & 2, the rest wasn't issued), P2 Live Groove (the only projects issued in Russia are Space & Live Groove) and some Fripp bootlegs. Sometimes i feel sorry for stealin' from Fripp but non-bootleg releases are pretty hard to find (especially if you do not live in Moscow, and I live in Krasnodar). Bootleg CD's and videos are in common use here. Most of people listen ONLY bootleg. My CD-collection (about 250 CDs) is halph consists of bootleg. The high price of B'Boom seems very strange. In Krasnodar such stuff costs about $2 for 1CD (and it's even cheaper in Moscow). But Vladivostok is VERY far away, so I don't know. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 11:37:40 -0800 From: "Stephen Goodman" Subject: Millennial Inquiries Per the post by Russell Whitworth in ET #624.. > There is currently a debate going on as to the most > suitable music to perform in the Millennium Dome > during the closing minutes of the year/century/millennium, > at the celebrations being hosted by the Queen. Who's going to the Dome - besides the Queen that is - for New Year's? I understand that they're having trouble selling tickets to the thing, possibly because it attempts to offer so much in one location? I have noticed in the Dome promo page that there's going to be some sort of Cirque du Soleil aerial show inside, billed as having music "by Peter Gabriel,"... interesting since he's reportedly going to be playing with Genesis live for the first time in years (well, Phil's gone!), in Fiji of all places! (Is it possible that The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway could be finally produced as a movie, much less performed in toto??) I and my sweetie are going to the Royal Observatory party, just down the Thames... Brian Ferry's going to be playing there, amongst others. As a side note, I've found Phil Manzanera's own site (http://www.manzanera.com) which, like DGM, is offering new releases with extra tracks, of classics like "801 Live", "Listen Now!", and "Primitive Guitars". "Phil Express" informs me that, while Phil is not currently billed as playing with Brian Ferry at New Year's, adds that "you never know!" so I might be in for a real treat! Nonetheless, it might be interesting to note how many of us in the London area are going to which party. Probably best to reply privately on this last one... I have been a photographer of musical events for many years, and attitudes differ from one performer to the next. Fripp has every right to control the recording of his image on film. Fripp's introduction to Tony Levin's book "Road Photos" is insightful, and shows that he understands the nature of the medium quite well. Fixing images is serious business that often has little to do with the subject of the camera, but instead the agenda of the person making the photographs. A good photograph is a transaction with the subject, and transactions made in good faith with the trust of both parties convey a sense of truth. Stolen images tell us little other than the physical resemblance of the subject projected through an indeterminate level of interaction. Fripp and Levin share a communication and trust that will not be matched in casual audience photography, and he has every right to prohibit the intrusion. There is no conflict, or double standard involved. As for the photography of the audience by Tony Levin, you paid to see him, he did not pay to see you. He has integrated his stage photography with his performance, and it is fairly common knowledge that the possibility of being photographed exists at a show. If you have difficulty with the photographic aspect of Levin's involvement with the crowd, move to the back row or out of the line of sight. However, judging from the "transactions" that Levin has recorded of audiences moved by music, I would have no difficulty trusting him to record my image. Only one performer ever asked me to not photograph a performance. It was James Harmon, who I talked to at length before the show, taking a few photographs of him and the promoter. When the show began, there were PA difficulties and he waved me off, clearly irritated. I stopped taking photographs, respecting his wishes, and enjoyed the show once the problems were sorted out. If it interferes with a performance, as Fripp feels it does, then it is to everyone's advantage to refrain. Clearly Levin's photography does not interfere as far as Fripp is concerned. I believe it's a matter of trust. Usually I take photographs when I think I can do good work. I've only seen Fripp once, in the early eighties, and I did not take a camera. Without access to, or conversation with, the subject of a photograph (particularly performers) you might as well buy a fan magazine with photographs taken by someone else that they did have some sort of momentary relationship with. Most performers who allow photography openly and without qualification do so because it satisfies a need with them, not you. In the case of extroverted performers, constant photography from the audience can spur them on to perform better. I suspect that it gives them an ego boost that they may need; it clearly makes them the center of attention. I don't think Fripp needs the ego boost that audience photography provides; perhaps he prefers applause to blinding lights in the eyes. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Dec 1999 20:32:44 -0700 From: "Gustavo de la Vega" Subject: Centipede, BLUE For anyone who is interested in the following titles check out Gary Davis at the Artist Shop web site: Centipede-Septober Energy (2CD) $22 something.
