So I got my copy of the ProjeKct Box and gave a few listens to it, but at a generally low volume level, and listening in a passive manner. There were some good sections. I then got a moment to *really* listen to this music with headphones on. Wow! Talk about power trios! Like for others, I'm sure the P3 CD stands out, in part because it is the newest music, not previous heard in other places. But it is also the most forward thinking of the 4 CDs (along with the terrific section at the end of the ranting crowd reacting the a "flash photo" event), with the track that sounds most like King Crimson 2000: Masque #3 brings chills down my spine! It is so appropriate that the fractals all come together here as King Crimson. Robert Fripp is a musician just hitting his stride. Trey and Pat are good company for him to keep, and keep up with. King Crimson fans are missing out if they don't get this CD set. Wow! I had never heard of Molybdenum. So I searched and instantly found: http://www.imoa.org.uk/ The International Molybdenum Association of course. Dig this. Molybdenum is a metallic element which is most frequently used as an alloying addition in alloy and stainless steels. Its alloying versatility is unmatched because its addition enhances strength, hardenability, weldability, toughness, elevated temperature strength and corrosion resistance. At any rate, and to whomever it may concern, I want to know more about what B.B. consideres to be his influences. At times, his drumming seems to me to be genuinely original and not in any way related to any specific drummer or style, or even scool of thought ABOUT drumming. I have in mind, specifically, a Paiste "sound page" I got out of Modern Drummer magazine back in the 80's, which I still have and play. The entire @2 minute drum piece still touches me, in the way that it doesnt seem to be related to anything else on planet Earth, before or since. There is a particular section toward the end, where the timing of the cymbal strikes is so far out of the realm of anything I,ve ever heard, that it has always left me with the impression of the cymbals hitting themselves! If you could refer me to any specific artices, etc., I would really appreciate it. Many Crimso lovers fail to recognize that Zappa picked him as his "stunt guitarist" back in the late seventies. In his wake followed such notables as Steve Vai and Mike Keneally. And he was also an adjunct guitarist with The Talking Heads. Appearing LIFE IN WARTIME and TALKING HEADS LIVE. While Adrian's writing is notably influenced by the Beatles, a lot of his humor is directly connected to being a part of Frank Zappa's band. King Crimson's music is a continuum. I view it(much like the other Deadheads on this list), as going through many phases. I happen to have acquired a healthy appreciation for all eras. Having at one time worked for a high-end t-shirt manufacturer (Logotel), I can tell you that t-shirts cease to be "mint" the very first time they are washed -- and there is an obvious and easily discernable difference between a new and unwashed t-shirt and the cleanest washed t-shirt. For one, he's not as good a guitarist as Robert Fripp." I sort of disagree with this assessment, and will take this opportunity to offer some thoughts I've been formulating of late with respect to Belew, Fripp, and Crimson. (And Gordo, this is more triggered by, than in response to, your post). I think that Fripp and Belew's styles are so different that is is quite difficult to compare the two in terms of who is "better." Certainly Belew has his adherents. For me, the Crimsons with Belew have been the best Crimsons, because of the way his playing (and singing) compliments, offsets, Fripp and the material. If Fripp is to be criticized, it is because his playing is extremely technically proficient, at the expense of emotion and feeling. Fripp's style is full of shapes, patterns, "soundscapes", all expertly, precisely played, but frankly none bespeaking the heart and soul of the artist. Fripp (his incessant journaling notwithstanding) is a private man, and this sense of privacy-- and of, yes, "discipline"-- informs his work. Belew, on the other hand, squawks, squeals, whines, howls, yowls, yaps, flaps, makes elephant noises... he splashes emotional color across Fripp's precise canvases, and in doing so wakes them up, makes them brighter and three-dimensional ("in your face", as we Yanks like to say. Or some of us, at any rate.) Mr. Anderson quotes Brad Wilmot as saying, "Adrian the songwriter can be silly, even down right goofy." Agreed. But I've always seen this silliness, goofiness as a positive attribute, again the perfect counterpoint to Fripp's dour, dire seriousness. Crimson is a band who desparately benefits from these Belewsian infusions of squawking, silliness, and animal noises. Belew introduces a much-needed counterpoint to the racket, one that injects dynamic, makes the music breathe, makes it connect-- even the instrumental stuff-- on a more human, emotional level. So much so that, for me, the single thing that differentiates all the projekcts from Crimson (even where Belew drums) is that vibrant colorful Belew splash. After 18 years, Belew has irrevocably stamped his imprint on Crimson. And when he isn't there, for me it just aint Crimson anymore. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 13:28:36 PDT From: "Brian Barton" Subject: KC Live at Toronto 1971 As my friend Ronald Vogel reported in the last issue, I have indeed sent Mini-Disc copies of three 1971 shows to DGM - the most notable of these being Live at Plymouth May 11, 1971. I say give Fripp a few weeks to listen to it, and then let's all email ET requesting its release in one form or another, because this show should be accessible to all Crimheads. It (along with most other shows from 71) flies in the face of what people have been saying about this band - that it couldn't handle the Crimson repertoire and that it could only jam, not improvise. Among my favorite highlights are the mind-blowing 14 minute Sailor's Tale (more of a loose improv than the highly structured song it would later become - complete with flute), the majesty of ITCOTCK (passionately sung by Boz) and early versions of songs that would sound very different very soon (esp. Ladies of the Road, which is played much faster and with different lyrics). This is just one of many great shows from 1971 that were recorded by audients to whom we should be grateful. And don't assume all these shows have poor sound quality - I have just acquired a show from Toronto (Fall 1971) that sounds so good it makes Earthbound pale in comparison! - Brian Barton ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 15:07:22 -0500 From: Craig Shropshire Subject: Re: Elephant Talk #618 "Stupidity" quote >Sometimes arrogant, thrashy and misinformed posts are VERY FUNNY! Yes, he used a Foxx Fuzz/Wah pedal, long discontinued and now quite rare. However, his basses were Fender Precisions, not Jazzes. The main one seen in most pictures from the KC period has a natural wood finish with rosewood fingerboard and turtleshell pickguard, although a white one also makes appearances. Now I need some help if anyone can assist me: At some point both of the Live in Japan videos were apparently released on LaserDisc, possibly as import from Japan. I am trying to locate these. I also have a couple of questions. These can most likely be addressed by one or more of Messrs. Fripp, Singleton or Aldhal, and hopefully they are reading this and can give a reply: (1) Are there any plans to release the older live videos on DVD? (2) Will DGMLive be covering all of the converts on the upcoming tour and if so will there be a subscription or bulk discount available so that I might be able to listen to all (or at least many) of the shows? I happen to think that KC is a live band and prefer to listen to it that way. I have enjoyed the live releases, especially where the same song, for instance, Larks Tongues II, is played by the different lineups so that the styles of the different lineups can best be appreciated (IMHO) in the way that they interpret the same song differently. One additional comment about DVD: There is much on the Deja Vroom DVD that is only available to those with a DTS decoder. Dolby Digital is the standard, and due to the price of licensing and implementing DTS, is likely to stay the standard so PLEASE consider making the multiple soundtracks and the 5.1 sound available on Dolby Digital. :-) Warren Melnick warren at walrus dot com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 09:47:53 -0700 From: "Scott Steele" Subject: CGT w/Tony; MO Cheese; a low-paying gig like KC; hi Sid >One bit of exciting news that I will tell you about is our shows with Tony Levin. So far P1 is the jewel of the set for me, with P3 an intriguing second. P1: This is just beautiful music. I am quite impressed at what Pat has done with the V-drums and loops, but there is some classic Bruford stuff on here. Unlike Pat's fully electronic drumming, this is organic and honest playing. Like the 70s group, there is nowhere to hide behind technology, just the technique and creativity of the players right up front, and that's how I like it. Not only that, but BB and TL lay down some funky grooves at times. There is not a boring minute on this cd, I love it (it might be a good time to mention now that I'm a drummer). P2: Pretty much what I expected, and it's good. Adrian is a surprisingly good drummer, though he's no Bill of course, and his programming of the electronics isn't as advanced as Pat's. Highlights are the opening track and Live Groove, and I for one was pretty amused by the crowd noise following Fripp's exit at the end. P3: Very interesting...I've listened to this one about 5 times now, and it's excellent, original, etc. However, it stands out from the others in that there are few, if any, memorable themes (perhaps due to Pat's editing). Very atmospheric though, and I could see new KC music based off of this style (especially when combined with Belew's songwriting!) P4: Surprisingly, this didn't catch me right away. I absolutely love CC#7, but West Coast Live seemed to have more meandering moments and less cohesion (also due to editing). Admittedly, I only listened to this once and it was directly after listening to P1 & 2 all the way through, so I will probably have more tolerance for its harsher sound with fresh ears.
