The California Guitar Trio are getting ready to embark on their Fall Tour. To celebrate, we're launching the new CGT Majordomo E-mail List! To subscribe go to http://www.cgtrio.com/eform.htm and fill in the blanks, or send an E-mail to majordomo at indra dot com with the words "subscribe cgtlist username at yourdomain dot com" in the body of the E-mail, without quotes, where "username at yourdomain dot com" is, of course, your E-mail address. For now, this is going to be a one way list for the band to get news and tour dates out to fans. If there is enough interest at some point in making it an interactive list, that's also an option. Let me know what you think. Maybe Toby, Dan, and Mike can give me some pointers on how to do it up right. %^) Below is the latest update from Paul Richards sent out on Sunday, October 3, 1999 to CGT list subscribers. Best regards, Jon CGT Web ~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*^~*~^*~^ Hello All, The California Guitar Trio is getting ready to head out on tour again. Our tour schedule is posted below. We have some exciting new stuff in the works we will be debuting on this tour. I am going to keep most of it a secret for now, so you'll just have to come to one of the shows to hear what's new. Those of you outside our touring area, well ... you'll just have to wait! We plan on doing a lot of touring in the coming year, so hopefully we will come to your town soon. One bit of exciting news that I will tell you about is our shows with Tony Levin. There are 4 shows on the upcoming tour that will feature special guest Tony Levin playing with the CGT. Check the schedule below for details. We became friends with Tony during our 2 years touring with King Crimson. Tony is one of the best bassist / stick players in the world. We are incredibly fortunate to perform with a musician of his caliber. Check out Tony's site at http://www.papabear.com. He has the most incredible discography that I have ever seen! We are looking at the possibility of doing more touring with Tony next year when his solo record comes out. Most of our upcoming East Coast shows are double billed with solo guitar master Richard Leo Johnson. Richard has a great new album out on Blue Note called Fingertip Ship. I saw Richard playing in LA earlier this year, WOW! I am really happy that we are doing some shows together, should be lots of fun for us and the audiences. One of the highlight shows of our last tour was at the Boulder Theater. An amazing place to see and hear the CGT! The Boulder Theater has invited us back again for October 22. This show will feature both Tony Levin and saxophonist Bill Janssen who plays on our Pathways CD and is known for his amazing work on Adrian Belew's solo albums. We will continue to document the tours by posting photos on the CGT Road Cam page. So you can see the CGT in action along the way. Hideyo has begun an impressive collection of photos of his meals on the road. We hope to include this as a special feature on the Road Cam page called Hideyo's FOODcam. What is Hideyo having for dinner today? Sushi? an In And Out Burger? Very exciting stuff! Hope to see you at one of our shows! Tour dates posted below. There's a section where you can ask Greg a question and he might answer it. I think the only questions he answers are the ones that have unlimited praise for him as an artist as if he still had a strong musical career. He really hasn't written anything very innovative since 1973. Maybe I'm just pissed that he didn't respond to my question. Maybe someone else can answer this question that has baffled me for years. What the hell do those guys yell at the end of "Are you ready, Eddy?" on Tarkus. "M.O. Cheese?" Can someone help me? The man himself obviously doesn't remember. Ah, those hazy days of Tarkus..... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 17:34:28 -0400 From: Phil DeMario Subject: Recent KC Release Reviews The mailman was very high on my list last week -- both the Collector's Club #7 (ProjeKct 4 live in SF) and the 24-bit remaster of ITCOTCK arrived!! ProjeKct 4 "The Roar Of P4 -- Live in San Francisco" is fantastic. I have already listened to it more than any other KCC club release I own. Why? It is dense, complex and rewards repeated listening. A few highlights: Pat's "acid house" influenced percussives throughout. I think given his own space in which to work (out from under Bruford's formidable shadow) Pat really shines. Trey soloing over Fripp's soundscape washes at the end of "Deception of the Thrush" is sublime -- one of my favorite episodes on the CD. Fripp's solos throughout are excellent and the sinuous solo on "Deception of the Thrush" is particularly great. "Seizure" has a pulsing, static intensity that I think is quite new territory for the group. "ProjeKction" has an interesting theme and variations structure. Lowlight: The "talker" used in the beginning of "Deception of the Thrush" is pretty silly -- and not in a good way. Luckily it only makes a brief appearance. Sound quality is very good. The 24-bit remaster of ITCOTCK is superb. In comparison to the "Definitive Edition", I found the instruments to have more weight and presence, they sound richer and fuller. Greg's bass and Ian's woodwinds benefit the most from the added weight, though there is more visceral impact throughout. Clarity is also greatly improved as I was able to easily hear background parts that I had to strain to hear on the "Definitive Edition"-- all parts sounded more "continuous" and smoother, even warmer. Gone is the cold electronic sheen of the "Definitive Edition". The soundstage is also wider, less congested. And the packaging is swell -- like a miniature LP record, with better cover art reproduction than other releases have had. One (minor) complaint: the cleanup has made the mellotrons sound a bit too polite -- I like the rude screech of a mellotron. That was one of the reasons I always found this album so involving -- when those mellotrons kicked in on the title track, or in "Epitaph", they had you by the throat! Anyway, well worth buying (again!). Can't wait for the rest of the 24-bit KC remasters. -Phil demario at erols dot com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 17:03:05 -0700 From: "Scott Steele" Subject: Mogul Thrash quality; good evening hippies; Centipede; Night >On a personal note, I was delightfully surprised by the quality of music on Mogul Thrash. The comparison to a progressive Chicago seems quite apt. Unfortunately this CD seems to have been mastered from vinyl - OUCH! But at present, this is the only official release available for this album. So for it's historical value and the high quality of the music, I do recommend it. It's a pity I can't equally praise the sound quality. Gary, thanks for your candid assessment of Mogul Thrash's virtues (and otherwise). I'm a major Crim-inal I guess, because I would hate to do without either. Even the phantom four minutes on Night Watch. I repeat, which four minutes do you slice? I can't think of any. >Another point about Fripp and that is before I listened to Great Deceiver and heard Rob's antics, I always thought that this guy was a super serious individual with nothing but a stone face but in listening to these crowd intros, it seems to me that Mr Fripp is indeed the jokester and that maybe this cold exterior is just that, a facade of sorts... A big hoax. Hahahahaha. Well I don't know what you mean about "Rob's antics" but I would love to have a CD of the interesting things Fripp said when speaking to the crowd between songs lo these many years ago. Some of them were quite hilarious, and sound systems being what they were back then, I could never quite make out what he was saying back in the day. >Tony is the greatest casualty here. Just today I picked up at my local indie shop a 3 CD Japanese Import supposedly done by PolyCanyon, Japan for DGM. It contains the first 3 collector's club releases: 1. Marquee '69 2. Jacksonville '72 3. Beat CLUB '72 (included are2 booklets: one in Japanese and the other English...nicely boxed. Are these Legit releases?) If they are.....then Real KC Music is very very hard to get for the true collectors. Trust me...I have looked ALL over for anything like this stuff. I have wanted "Earthbound" on CD for a decade and a half. Still can't find it........ I wanted the "Jacksonville '72" since I knew it existed but could not find it anywhere. When I contacted DGM I was told it was sold out with no re-pressing date..what fun. Same thing with learning of KCCC volume 3 with the Jaimie Muir lineup. No one could tell me anything at any record store purveyor. (And you can't get it if you're not a member.) I love Crimso and have seen them 3 times, Projeckt2 once and Belew once and have grown up on them since 1974. I support the bands I believe in. I have ordered various items thru DGM, have all the box sets and assorted stuff before the collector's club. I have all their recordings (thru the 80's version) on vinyl and even an ancient 8-track of "LTIA". There is a problem with all things Crimson getting to the fans who LOVE them, and the NEW ears who NEED to hear them. But hear this message please...PLEASE. It's way too difficult for many people to go this way, and very confusing. (Thru the collector's club) Not only that but it alienates many young people who do not have the cash to show up front to join the club without knowing what they are getting. Remember, young adults are skeptical and that's how it is. It's also difficult to those without net access or even know that the KCCC (or even Crimso itself) exists or what it offers. By the time people are aware that it exixts, the product is gone. I have paid $86.00 (including tax) tonite to enjoy 3 CD's I have wanted for a long time. I am enjoying Jacksonville as I write. I only hope that the hard earned money I spent goes to the boys in the band and not some digital boot-ster, and that this is a true DGM import. (If this IS a true DGM release, then Robert, you should make it easy to get in the States, cause God knows you can't find rarities of quality, and I know of several people who would gobble up the collectors club stuff if available in record outlets.) Let alone all the posts I see on the net. (and you do too). "Can't get U.S.A..." "Great Deciever is unavailable..." "What's Earthbound???...." You don't see that on e-bay...tons of Crimsoidness there. And unfortunately K.C. and Fripp and DGM dosen't make a buck from this. (The box set I bought tonite is available there on auction as of last nite at $60.00. and I'm sure it'll go to $80 or $90.00) PEOPLE WANT THIS STUFF. Make it easier to get. While I don't intend to defend any of the band members (it's unnecessary!), I do think the vast majority of the readers would be well served by being spared the cruel and hopefully thoughtless comments of some. I understand the need for criticism. I think it fits in nicely with the audient motif Robert holds before us. I enjoy the understanding which results from the dialog, diatribe, discussion (these are words with a "D" this time ;-) I understand the sanctity of one's own opinion (kind of like enjoying one's own farts). I do not understand the willingness to damage an ego which must occur after venting such noisesome (look it up, it doesn't mean what you might extrapolate!) effluent. The criticism of a performance, a mix, the interpretation of an old standard, clothes or even the funny haircuts from the sixties should all be fair game. The criticism of a person, especially in front of such a large and expansive forum, should only be undertaken with great care & concern, IMHO! Certainly, person-oriented criticism has its place, but I question whether or not that place is a public mailing list, such as this. I have, as I expect most of this list's readers do, a great deal of respect and appreciation for King Crimson, in its various forms and incarnations. Let's enjoy whatever they offer. Let's discuss what they offer. Let's not rip holes in their egos. Flinging about coprolalia benefits only the flinger and never the flingee. So let's keep our unconstructive criticism to ourselves and in the word's of that hippie on stage at Woodstock ('68): "Keep feeding each other!" At the end of the remastering process, I found myself strangely attracted to several / many parts of the album. But where it fails for me is in the inability of the (attractive, eguiling, amusing, peculiar, wobbly) parts to express the sense of a coherent whole. When Simon (demon mastering engineer) & I parted, he kindly expressed support for the albums we'd been working on, with the exception of "Lizard" which was (exact word escapes me, but this is close enough...) awful. He then said, but it "wasn't (Robert's) fault". Robert replied: "If it wasn't >my fault, then whose was it?". The creator has lost his objectivity, of course...........(what does he know, anyway? ;^) "LIZARD" is nothing less than an unqualified MASTERPIECE. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 09:24:03 +0200 From: POISSON Thomas Subject: Night Watch CD length Some comments regarding the double vs single CD debate for the "Night Watch" release : please consider that 13 UKP (the DGM list price for the NW) is the price for a single CD release, not double. I'd agree, it will making a good mark from which we can gauge what the DD are aiming at but recently I've been thinking.... (Although I haven't actually heard it yet) How about the Double Duo doing a revamped, recycled, reworked (etc) version of the old fan favourite Doctor Diamond. Some reasons for this: 1) There hasn't been a studio recording of it yet, 2) Seeing as Fripp is the only member from the particular incarnation that wrote this song still in the King today it would/should not sound stale and put them in any risk of non-progression but... 3) It would be keeping with the KC tradition of keeping with the KC tradition, that is; even though the band and Mr Fripp believe in progressing they have strong roots and pride in their past which is something that I respect, 4) Even if it was crap/rejected by the band I'm sure it could be stuffed onto a later CC release and still be enjoyed by the band. Just a thought, onto my next one: What about a "Best of CC" (or something along those lines) CD/download released for our poor, our huddled, . Some of us just don't have the money to join the CC (I'm still in school for God's sake) and what about the lesser fan, I'm sure there would be a market for it. Just a thought, onto my next one (whoa, deja vu): In reference to the ETer talking of Belew playing the blues; As I understood it it was not to literally be blues that came out of the amp but more Ade would be playing with the passion of a blues player. I hope I am right because I hate blues. I like the (VERY) distorted reference RED makes to it but I just don't see how people can put up with virtually the same chords, same cliched guitar 'licks', same gravely voice singing about the same time their dog died/wife left/etc without getting extremely pissed off. I know I am. I'm sure KC's take on the blues would be more interesting but still... blues is blues is blues is blues Finally (whoa, deja vu) (nope, I was wrong), Are we going to get some other diaries on the Norbet Fragg page eg, Platter Canonn, the Tankk Guitarist/Stoneist? Yeh, that was crappy I know, but I'm tired. (I think I'll go to the NF page now, save you all from an epic novel) Stuart "____ahhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh________" - Person sreaming on a roundabout. "BRRRRRrrrrrrrr______rrrrrrRRRRRR" - Ade's relationship with KC, metaphorically, assuming KC was a room/roundabout, etc and Ade was playing Elephant Talk (how do you write that sound anyway)........... With all due reverence to your fairly encyclopedic knowledge of Jazz and other musics, you have shown a Fripp bias in your analysis of King Crimson's influences. Although I've never seen it written, there's no way Tony Levin could not have been greatly influenced by Mingus, and I'm sure you'll acknowledge that without TL, the sound of KC would have been quite different. Another interesting thing to note (and I have no idea if Fripp is aware of this) is that, like Fripp, Mingus started his own label, made his own records, and even distrubted them himself (Dr P, can you confirm this?). A lot of Mingus' stuff was so damned experimental for its time, I guess he didn't want to bother with the hassle of trying to get it past even fairly open-minded record Co suits. I think he also had other artists on his label, but i can't remember right now. -Emory ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Oct 1999 15:55:43 -0400 From: Ted White Subject: Re: KC meets Mingus Not?...NOT! We're speaking of different eras here. When I spoke with Fripp about Mingus's influence (or lack thereof) on Crimson, it was, as I said, in *1979*. Tony Levin was then playing in Peter Gabriel's touring band and Fripp was assuring me that King Crimson was over and done with. The post which started this discussion also refered to the seventies Crimson. You know, I thought when I started to read your letter that you'd caught me out. What if *Ian McDonald* had been an intense fan of Mingus? But then I read on. And in any event I have never heard a trace of Mingus in the first KC album. On the other hand, more or less contemporary with that album (within a year or so) there was Mannfried Mann's two CHAPTER THREE albums. And they certainly did sound like they'd been influenced by Mingus. Indeed, I used them as a hook on which to hang a piece about Mingus for CRAWDADDY magazine in 1970. > Another interesting thing to note (and I have no idea if Fripp is aware of this) > is that, like Fripp, Mingus started his own label, made his own records, and > even distrubted them himself (Dr P, can you confirm this?). I think he also had other artists on his label, but i can't remember > right now. You're thinking of two different labels and two different decades. In the fifties Mingus and Max Roach owned the Debut Records label, which released a bit over two dozen albums, more than half as 10" LPs. These included the debut albums as leaders for Paul Bley, Kenny Dorham and Thad Jones, as well as albums by John La Porta, Teo Macero, Hazel Scott, Miles Davis, Ada Moore, Alonzo Levister, and by Roach and Mingus. The label was eventually sold to Fantasy, which has reissued over half the Debut catalog on CD. In the sixties Mingus had a series of Bad Experiences with record labels. United Artists shafted him on his Town Hall concert of 1962. Impulse looked at first like the White Knight, but ultimately washed its hands of Mingus after he accused them of losing tape. At that point Mingus started a mail order label, Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. It put out four albums (two were double LPs). Fantasy subsequently reissued two of them on both LP and CD. Mingus's "experimental" period ran up to about 1955, and is best captured on the Savoy JAZZ COMPOSERS WORKSHOP and the Fantasy/Original Jazz Classics JAZZICAL MOODS. There is nothing particularly experimental about the music he released on his own albums on either of his labels. By the sixties in particular Mingus was a mature composer. Mingus's problems with other record labels had nothing to do with his music and everything to do with his personality, which could be both prickly and paranoid and usually led to mutual distrust between him and the record companies. --TW (Dr P) dc-et #6 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 20:55:30 EDT From: Hocow at aol dot com Subject: Belew/Fripp Lennon MacCartney Good Evening Teamies, I just wanted to throw in some ruminations on recent comments about Adrian's place in the band. I believe Robert and Adrian's musical relationship is remenicent of Lennon and MacCartney's in the Beatles. Lennon by himself was too ascerbic and his music too unrefined. MacCartney by himself is too saccarine. His music is more polished but minus Lennon's edge it's, to paraphrase David Letterman, too damn perky. These are generalizations and, of course, both musicians had great solo moments. The point is, as a team they were great 90% of the time and as solo artists 30%. The balance and contrast of these styles fused together to create magic. I know this is blasphemy here but up until Fripp/Sylvian The First Day I always found Fripp's solo material dry and unlistenable. During the years the band was broken up I would sit through it just to get a six bar taste of soloing remenicent of Crim. Why the old Crim songwriting appealed to me and Fripp's solo material did not I can't explain. Yes, Bob, I even liked Lizard. Listening to the ProjeKcts I find it is Crim but not Crim. It has the dark mood, the intensity, the chops. The fun just isn't there. That crazy squealing tortured horse sound that Adrian (the guitarist) would add is missing. It's great stuff, but it isn't Crimson. A good example would be the original Red vs live Red with Adrian scribbling over all the dead spots in the song. When I listen to the original now it sounds like a rough edit that still needs the solos dubbed in. Adrian the songwriter can be silly, even down right goofy. But when he's on he's terrific. He's an excellent vocalist. The problem is that so many Crim fans have locked onto one early phase or another and can't move on. Is the early material majestic or pompous? Those of us who get too serious seem to be embarassed by the poppier material when we're trying to convince the neighborhood head bangers that King Crimson are heavier than Megadeath. Give up. If they don't get it, they don't get it. In its own way Elephant Talk is as great as Epitaph. Enjoy excellence wherever you can find it because there is so much out there that is crap. I don't think you've been following the diary long enough to have a clear idea of what has been taking place. Do you really think all 5 other guys were standing around with nothing to do while Fripp contemplated Crimson's future? Crimson didn't remain in active duty primarily BECAUSE of Bruford and Levin, not the other way around. These two are busy guys with limited time to spend on a low paying gig like King Crimson. Fripp couldn't even get all 6 people together to PRACTICE let alone write and record an album. The ProjeKCts came into existence due to the fact that Fripp could only get 3 or 4 guys together at any given time. Its Fripp who waited around for something to happen. In the end he had to decide to go with the 3 people who really wanted to do the next Crimson. Loyalty is worthless unless compromise is a part of the deal. If someone like Levin will accept the Seal and Gabriel tours over Crimson then that's the way it is. Seal may have been something to pay the bills but Gabriel WILL go on tour in the next 6 months to a year and I don't think Levin is willing to not be a part of it Crimson or no Crimson. Fripp wants Crimson to progress and part of his vision for this (and really it always has been) is the use of the most advanced cutting edge technology available. Bruford seems to be currently into the exact oposite, a retro accoustic jazz mode. Personally I get fed up with people (including Fripp himself sometimes!) wanting Crimson to be a democratic band. I WANT to hear what Fripp's clear uncompromising vision of Crimson is without the others trying to bend it to their own ideas. The double trio Crimson WAS a democracy and the person we seemed to hear the least from was Fripp himself. Like he has said before, if a lot is going on, he tends not to play. Fripp is the person I want to hear the most! To conclude: To me Fripp did NOT cast aside either Levin or Bruford. THEY made the decision not to be a part of the group by doing other things and tying themselves up in scheduals making it impossible for the 6 piece to regroup. And as for Belew, he obviously does want to do it, but was overburdened to move forward this fall. Fripp isn't stupid. If Belew goes, so does performing most of the music that KC has done for the last 18 years. Fripp is willing to wait, but I think it to be the right decision to move forward without Levin and Bruford. For Crimson to last more than 1 year it needs members willing to make the band the highest priority in their lives. I don't think Bruford or Levin are willing to do that anymore. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 18:03:19 +0200 From: masse at geocean dot u-bordeaux dot fr (Laurent MASSE) Subject: a few responses/reactions Some reactions on et#616 >He (RF) also said about Lizard: "I'm not 'identified' with 'Lizard' " >" 'Lizard' lovers must be strange" >" I listen to to the work of these young men with good humour" >" very few of those ideas works" >" 'Lizard' is unlistenable" After reading these comments from Robert, I know that at least one person in the world faces the same problems as me trying to find something pleasant in Lizard... >?What about david torn and sylvian to fill the empty space? That used to be the domain of software companies. But we are approaching the new millennium, and the lines are blurred: every company has to have its time to shine. I finally downloaded winamp to listen to the mexico city show. I know it's late, but for obvious reasons I'm leery if installing new software on my computer. It shouldn't have mattered -- what kind of moron would release an album with a time limit? Winamp tries to load up a now nonexistent licensing page, which has been taken off the web. So I think DGM should change their name to 404 Records. I was hoping that winamp would be smart enough to ignore this step and just play the file, but it's not that good a program, and I am not a good enough programmer to write a crack. Anyway, this means that if you have the mexico show, and you ever get a new computer, or ever have a hard disk crash, or ever windows decides to corrupt your license files and you have to delete them (we all know THAT would never happen), the album becomes worthless. Be warned. If you want to keep this music, you have two options. Encode to another format, such as mp3 or an audio cd, or backup your hard drive. The space savings on wma are impressive, are they not? God help anyone who decides to pay for a download. Personally, I wouldn't buy CDs if they only lasted until I replaced my cd player or had a power outage, and had a negligible chance of working in the first place. Anyway, I wasted days downloading this, and I'm a bit ticked, but the real upshot is this: I hope that DGM decided to release this microsoft show as a beta test of the format, not as a promotion. By looking back now at the results of the test, DGM will understand that this is not the format to use, and try something else. mp3 perhaps, or vqf, or the new mpeg. I know Fripp is smart enough to know not to continue with this partnership, but I'm afraid that he might have lost his mind. I've been very pessimistic lately when it comes to businesses. If he has lost his mind, I personally can't support the company, the same as any other company that shows blatant incompetence. The thing that sucks about it is that King Crimson is such good music, as are the other bands on DGM. I suppose my only options are either used CDs, which only indirectly support music companies, or, more attractive yet, burning cdrs from mp3s, until DGM ends its partnership with microsoft. DGM used to be a top label, but it might become a death sentence for artists who decide to go with it. Here's hoping it doesn't. -- http://www.crosswinds.net/~dtreview : new Dream Theater review. John and I had had tea together at my home in the country to discuss working together. I had plaice because I'm a fishatarian. I stopped eating meat partly because I had reached the point where I loathed blood oozing from the meat so much that I'd have it blackened and without nutritional value whatsoever. Occasionally, though, I've eaten liver pate and chicken because it seems to me that manners are more important than one's dietary requirements. John and I found we had a lot in common: he was out performing with his father when he was 16, which would have been my probable morphing had I not gone into the family firm. Like him I played at bar mitzvahs and weddings in hotels, but I was still a provincial, aspirant player when John was in the centre of things in London, influencing my fellow musicians in Bournemouth. With my wife, one of our treats is eating out together. When we lived in Wiltshire, we often used to go to a pub along the Chalk valley. We would sit on a grassy slope overlooking a beautiful view. I'd have their fish bake or vegetarian lasagne. Toyah loves lamb: watching them or eating them. It was appallingly difficult in the early Seventies to get decent vegetarian food. I remember wandering around Preston at 2pm on an early closing day with the drizzle beginning, trying to find a vegetarian lunch. When I go to Nashville to visit Adrian Belew, my pal from King Crimson, we go to a vegetarian Mexican restaurant called Loco Lupe. They have a Margarita called 'the Monster' that comes in a 52oz glass. I've got a sweet tooth. I've been going to The Polly Tea Rooms in Marlborough for 25 years and I often buy two or three dozen cakes. They now give me bulk discount. This basically means that I set up the collaboration between UK synth ace Boddy and Europa String Choir Warr guitarist Markus Reuter. I met Markus at a Guitar Craft course in German and saw him perform a solo concert on the Warr Guitar.
