I'm just speaking as a fan. Anyway, the Fripp product in question is for charity: There's a great, previously unreleased, Robert Fripp track on a new double CD released for a very good cause. The CD is called The Sky Goes All The Way Home and has been released to help Parkwood School in Derbyshire and the Down's Syndrome Association. Robert's contribution - The Sky Falls - comes from his four-day Soundscape performance at Salisbury Cathederal in 1997. It's dark and dramatic and features some astounding work by RF. The CD also features new tracks by John Wetton (an instrumental), Anthony Phillips, Gordon Giltrap, The Enid, Roy Harper, Nick Harper, Kevin Coyne, No-Man and many others, along with pre-existing tracks by Peter Hammill and Rick Wakemen. The project was conceived by BBC Radio Derby presenter Ashley Franklin, whose daughter Claire suffers from Down's Syndrome and uttered the phrase "The sky goes all the way home" on a family drive some years ago. The discs cost #13.95 and are available from Midas Music, Dovedale House, 73 Wilson Street, Derby, England, DE1 1PL or you can email them @midas.u-net.com Who knows? Maybe Robert will release those Salisbury Cathdral Soundscapes in some form one day. If this track is anything to go by, they'd made a great CD. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 13:14:12 EDT From: Goodcraker at aol dot com Subject: Makes sense to me, CUCUGROTH Hello All, Well I guess Greg Karl is a more accurate shot than I! Nope. There was a big falling out between the owner and the guy who has been booking all of this wonderful stuff at Martyr's, which resulted in said guy getting sacked. Subsequently, the Adrian Belew and Richard Thompson shows were moved to Double Door in what I'm guessing is some sort of act of retaliation. I've noticed that both Adrian and the Psychodots (formerly the Bears) have played wherever this guy has been booking, so there seems to be a strong allegiance there. Martyr's is too nice of a room to go out of business...I hope. I just got back from a bass clinic hosted by Billy Sheehan. His technique is incredible, and at one point was asked about how his style developed. He talked about always being in 3-piece bands that did songs with more than just the three (they didn't want to split the money up further!), and how he started pulling in the other parts. At one spot, he noted "We used to do 'Schizoid Man' and there's this saxophone trill during the main riff." Mentioning that the bass part by itself wasn't much, he proceeded to demonstrate how he put the bass and the sax parts together - sounded very cool. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 08:57:39 EDT From: MLavallee at aol dot com Subject: Collector's Club Nomad Stem writes "Perhaps if their was a bootleg market for Trey Gunn or Peter Hammill, we'd see a need for Club releases from those artists" Couldn't say about Trey Gunn, but there's a big market for Hammill boots, I've seen more of them available online than I have Crimson. It was also my first experience seeing any of the Crimfolk solo acts live. Due to timing difficulties (the paper said the Irresponsibles would being at 10pm when in fact it was 9pm) I missed all but the last two songs of theirs, so I can't give a genuine opinion of their performance. Belew's performance was great, and I look forward to seeing him (and the rest of King Crimson) on the next tour. Belew came up on stage commenting 'Oh, there you are. I've been looking all over for you' to the audience. The set list is pretty much as follows (as memory dictates): -opening instrumental- Men in Helicopters -two of the Belewps instrumentals- Dinosaur Young Lions 117 Valley Drive Madness -acoustic instrumental- Inner Man (acoustic) Inner Man (decked out electric) Matte Kudesai (abridged) I Know What I Know and That Is All I Know and I Know It Animal Kingdom -a song he's writing with his son on drums- Three of a Perfect Pair Man in the Moon (new acoustic version) encore: Rail Song During the Q&A sessions, he commented on mp3s, the new Crimson upcoming project, his solo work, the new Bears album, and Dust (the Crimson b-sides project). Mp3s - He's adopting a wait-and-see about them. King Crimson - This fall he and Fripp are getting together to write new material for the new Belew, Fripp, Gunn, and Mastelotto lineup. He said he likes Bruford and Levin's work, but they're too busy with other things to pursue Crimson fully, and that they may come back for later tours. The new album should be released early next year. Solo work - If you can find copies of the Bears albums, send them to him. He can't find some of them since their out of print. He jokingly said he's been thinking about bootlegging some of his own work. The new Bears album should be released soon. 'Dust' is a large project, according to Belew. Right now there are 90 (?!) tracks and they're working on narrowing that number down. Parducci" Subject: GIG REVIEW: Earthworks at the Knitting Factory Better late than never - I attended the first show and had a great time. I managed to quaff two pints of Pete's Summer Ale before the show at the bar downstairs, which set the tone nicely. The band started with My Heart Declares a Holiday and the title tune from the new album, A Part, and Yet Apart. The band handled the early material very well. Things slowed down a bit with Sarah's Still Life which featured an extended piano intro and Bill on brushes. I was very impressed to hear this band's take on Original Sin from the B.L.U.E. album. In fact, this show begged some comparisons to the B.L.U.E. show last year at the same venue, and suffers a little upon examination. While the musicians Bill has gathered are a talented bunch, I seldom got the sense that they were on equal footing. Each tune featured solo sections where the players stepped out. Most noteworthy was the energetic display by bassist Mark Hodgson during Bridge of Inhibition. This was good, but things really cooked when the band played as an ensemble, which was not often enough. Part of the problem may be the compositions. This appears to be the first all-acoustic outing for Earthworks: Bill played a simple Tama set; the other musicians played acoustic bass and saxophones, and the Kawai P88 was set to a classic piano sound. Bill wrote most of the material on the new album, and it follows the mood he set with If Summer Had Its Ghosts. It may be that Bill is out of his element writing for this type of ensemble. Or it may be that I don't hear this music the same way I heard B.L.U.E. and the earlier Earthworks albums. That being said, the band is very capable and I look forward to their next effort. I would also be interested to hear how they interpret other material, for example Weather Report's ballad, A Remark You Made. Robert C. I saw Adrian at the Double Door last Tuesday, and brought two friends who were complete strangers to his music. Both were blown away by his performance, and immediately grabbed his Coming Attractions CD. I told them that unfortunately his CDs are not all that accesible in stores but can be ordered through the web. Hope they start shopping soon. He is, by far, one of the most personable and likable performers I have ever seen. He is also too damn talented to not be noticed by more people. My buddies still can't fathom why AB wasn't playing a bigger venue, although most of us are familiar with loneliness of the long time KC,RF,AB etc. fan. But anyway, Ade played alot of electric, acoustic, and steel (Dobro?) guitar, covered experimental, KC, Bears and solo pop songs. An all around fantastic show. Ade took questions, requests, and told stories. A little advise to anyone wanting KC info.....(IMHO Ade is as much KC as RF, so I take his words as truth when it comes to the future of KC. EEEWWWW That outta get me some angry emails!!) Ade gave it to us straight forward, unlike RF's cryptic postings concerning his keys and doors and mice and tepid coffee and basement dwellers. Don't get me wrong people. I have always loved RF and his music, but what a refreshing performance. AB not only talked with his audience, he came out afterwards, signed autographs, took photos with fans (and God Almighty some obnoxious fans were in attendance!) and told some stories. I personally waited till the crowd thinned out, brought my Coming Attractions CD, and requested his autograph. AB asked me what I would like written, and I informed him that my girlfriend and her young son are big fans of his acoustic releases, but couldn't make the show. AB suggested that he write a quick hello to them and asked how old the boy was. I replied he was 10, and AB said that was great and that he seems to have a younger fan base. I of course stood there smiling and stammering my replies. AB handed me back the CD, and thanked me for coming. As I walked away I mentioned that I hope he one day makes it into the R&R Hall of Fame. He then called me back, and said "You don't really believe that will happen, do you?" I replied "Well I guess it doesn't matter to your fans. Does it to you?" He replied.."Yes it does. It would be a great honor, but I know it won't happen." AB shook my hand again, and I walked away. I thought to myself that meeting AB was like stopping to say hello to an old friend, not a musical genius with such an extensive background. He's a great performer and artist, and it was a truly distinct pleasure to have met him. The man gave his all for two hours and stuck around for another hour and a half to meet them. And that is a damn rare thing for performers today. Oh yeah....AB's info on KC.....RF is coming to his home in August to start writing and recording and it is definite that a tour will start around December. It'll include the 4 man line up mentioned in DGM and here, but he said that BB and TL may join on certain dates. But he did say that KC was his priority, and it will be rolling through the area soon. So if you happen to see AB coming yer way, go to the concert, show yer support, and buy some stuff. There aint too many musicians like this.
