After watching "The Noise" and a buncha recorded footage of the 80's KC, I'm pretty sure the box everyone is referring to is an Electro-Harmonix PolyChorus / EchoFlange / PolyFlange. The same device was marketed under those three names. I owned a PolyChorus, and it is exactly capable of the types of timbres and shrieks (a la "Sheltering Sky") evidenced by the footage. Also, note well that Belew also uses the Resonance and LPF Cutoff knobs on the GR300/GR808 guitar synth/controller to great effect. Ian McDonald is releasing his first solo album ever! It's called "Drivers Eye". The release date is June 21, 1999 on Camino Records in the U.K. There is no date for U.S.release. The info. that I got was that Pete Sinfield has co-written at least one song with Ian and that the album has a very crimsonesque feel to it! Greg Lake was asked to sing on some of the album but this did not come about. (For whatever reason.) Gary Brooker of Procal Harum fame will do the honors instead.Steve Hackett was also involved but to what degree I do not know.(ie:As producer, musician,or both, or neither.) Nothing else was mentioned about other musicians on the album. We'll have to wait and see. I for one am very excited about this release. Are you saying you'd rather only read whatever occasional DGM mailings you receive? That seems to be in contradiction with how I interpret your comments that perhaps Fripp is controlling the content of this newsletter. I think you can expect he will have a big say about what is sent out to DGM NEWS mailing list recipients. He doesn't control what you read in ET. I think that there will be some that will abandon ET because they believe the DGM NEWS mailing list will fill their need for news. But I think that in doing so they will miss a lot of news that has only, and will still only, be available in ET. ET will still be relevant and needed. I don't see its demise because of this. People come and go all the time. A lot of people don't subscribe any more because they can read it online at any time. I see ET as a community. We all have the ability to raise the level of discussion. And of course album recomendations like the ones you've given are always interesting. ET generally stays away from mindless worshipping and remains a place to discuss what's going on around us, and to broaden our horizons. Anyway, that's my point of view. Ex-actly. Here's what I'm saying: the DGM guestbook and mailing list are strategically designed to sabotage ET and render it an impotent, ineffectual little brother. The Fripp is a ferocious control freak, and always has been highly uncomfortable that ET rages on, outside his administrative sphere of influence. I think he'd rather it didn't exist at all. So, perceiving all the ET folks who post here with the overt purpose of "being noticed" by himself, he had the Crafty notion to create a feedback system(s) of his own, where his dominant presence would lure the more attention-seeking fans away from ET toward his own little playpen. Thus, my grumbling comment that the only way to save ET is to surrender control of it to His Frippness. When's the last time Fripp posted to ET? Do you think he ever will again? How come it would be so easy for him to post his diary entries to this list, yet he doesn't? Ask yourself these questions. This is simply not a Fripp-supported forum anymore. I've been a lover of Fripp's music (that being, of course, the music that channels itself through Fripp) since the early days. Then I got into the Punk thing - most refreshing! Loved The League Of Gentlemen's contribution to this idiom. Then "prog" guitar stuff seemed to fade into obscurity, tho Crimso surfaced every once-in-a-while to contribute to the current spirit of things. I even stopped playing guitar myself and started playing with keyboards and samplers (much influenced, mind, by No Pussyfooting). Then a younger friend introduced me to Satriani, Vai, and Zappa. Much joy! Got the guitar out again, took off the Frith-ish neck pickups, learned some technique. Learned how to play in NoPussyfootingWorld with delays, etc.. Most pleasantly surprised to hear Fripp was invited onto G3 and agreed to contribute. Didn't catch the gigs, but mightily intrigued about how the interplay went on the shared numbers! The DGM news service is just that -- a news service for occasional (note that word!) announcements of forthcoming releases etc. It's not a discussion group, and neither is the DGM guestbook - which BTW is even more heavily moderated than ET. I'll admit that the traffic on ET has been a bit boring of late (Toby, do we really need anything more about Pierre Moerlen's Gong? The KC connection is tenuous at best), but that's the way of it with mailing lists when there's not a lot of new-release or tour action happening. As for Crimso 2000, based on what I've heard of the Projekcts so far I'm picking this to be a leap forward for KC on a par with Court or Lark's Tongues. If it alienates some so-called Crimheads stuck permanently in a 70s or 80s timewarp, so be it. The rest of us will approach it with a more open mind, I hope. I was lucky enough to have attended RF's solo Soundscapes show at the former Mama Kin's on said date and I have to say it was refreshing to see RF invading the space owned by the kings of corporate rock (and my former employers!) Aerosmith. The evenings performance was magical and I was taken back to the day I was a 19 year old, seeing RF perform early Frippertronics at Passim's, a Cambridge coffeehouse. A milestone in my young life. Well, life for me took several strange courses, and at the tender age of 26, I found myself in the employ of Steven Tyler and company, as a travel assistant, to said band. It was an interesting 3 years of my life, until the pressures of living 24 hours a day to fulfill the whims of a bunch of spoiled babies, distasteful, to say the very least. I had begun to spend most of my time becoming the baby-sitter to ST and his various sexual and personal idiosyncrasies, and found myself beginning to loathe and despise musicians in general. His constant need for ego gratification and reinforcement of his "rock star" status, had begun to border on the psychotic. He would delay people, his family, and his own band in the pursuit of said adulation, to the point where I had to literally drag him physically away from certain situations, especially if they involved pretty young girls. He would always have me pick him up to take him to his appointments, because, in his words' "driving took his mind away from the creative process." He would also demand I make myself available by phone or beeper, 24 hours a day, for whatever reason he desired, to the point where I would receive phone calls at 4:00 in the morning, because he was bored. I also must cite the example of Stephen King, who a friend of mine has the pleasure of being in his employ as a chauffeur when he comes to Boston. King is usually willing to make himself available to fans for autographs, but he has had to draw the line at Red Sox games, where he has season tickets. He sometimes takes my friend into the game with him, only to run interference for him, or the onslaught of fans looking for autographs would not allow him to peacefully see one pitch thrown. Now, I admit to most, my diatribe might seem unimportant, but I feel I must throw my 2 cents into the ring, regarding a topic most consider dead in this group, the RF is an egotistical creep controversy. At the November RF performance, RF, when done playing, made his way through the crowd, with one arm crossed over his chest, avoiding contact with at least one drunken individual who kept trying to shake his hand. It was when he got to me and my girlfriend, who chose to remain seated during his exit, knowing his disdain for personal contact, that he came up to my girlfriend, shook her hand, thanked her for coming and asked if she had a sister at home! I was taken aback by this uncharacteristic show of interest in my very pretty girlfriend, and chose to remain silent as my girlfriend thanked him for a wonderful performance, and he continued on. What's my point? I guess having experienced both sides of the coin, I can see why RF might come off distant to some, but I understand and can only say that performers give us enough, and that while some seek adulation, we MUST respect those who give us the joy of their musical abilities, and not seek to validate our own existence through the pursuit of autographs and the like. Life is about choices, and wouldn't we all like to have our choices respected? Seeing as how I have all three and love them and would rather rub dollar bills on my eyeballs than part with them, Let me just say that the average Crimson fan wouldn't just love them, they would be blown away by them, for most of the same reasons that we like Crimson in the first place. Next to Levin and POSSIBLY Gunn, Malone is the biggest, baddest E. Coli in the big gut of art rock/metal stick playing. Courtlandt and Gordian Knot are what Trey Gunn solos albums would sound like if they actually had any testosterone in them. Gordian Knot especially- there's enough complexity and talent there to make Anthony Robbins cry his eyes out because he's not worthy, but there's also a sense of direction and power that is usually missing in instrument virtuoso solo albums (hello? Joe Satriani?). Cynic- all I can say is DAMN! I didn't even like their album, Focus, at first because it was so brutal and immense. It wasn't just a wall of sound, but a CUBE of sound that was falling on top of me. But after many months of listening and unravelling the dense layers it is simply brilliant and oddly beautiful in its relentlessness. This band is for all those Crimson fans who skip past Matte Kudasai and crank up Indiscipline. There is a stick line at the beginning of the song "I'm But a Wave to..." that sends a chill up my spine like noone else ever has done but Levin. Awesome. I highly recommend Focus to a good 50% of Crimson fans. The other half should never listen to it, because it will break you in several peices, wrap you in a Walmart replica Shroud of Turin and throw you into a fast moving river never to be seen again. Stay away from it. The bad news is that Focus is out of print from Roadrunner, and the other two (as of last time I checked) are only available through mail order from The Laser's Edge. I'd give you the URL here but my product placement rates aren't cheap and I haven't gotten anything from them for it. Very, very worth it for those of us who really seek out these things. Since Focus is out of print, I feel ethically impuned to dub it for trade for anyone who writes me. Bummer! These your have been the first shows in the USA in five years. The band has been in existence since 1984. Anyway, this postponment will give all you crimso freaks (I am one) and otherwise progressive heads the opportunity to check out this apparently little known (outside the UK) band. If you like King Crimson, Robert Fripp, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, ELP etc. etc., you'll absolutely flip out over these guys. They sound like none of the above except only occasionally (does that make any sense?). The album art would blow Roger Dean's mind, yet it is very different from Roger Dean's style. Albums I've heard are: Jurassic Shift; Curious Corn; Erpland; Pungent Effulgent; Afterswish. All are really great but Erpland is just absolutely unbelievable. There are hints of crimso on a few of the tracks on this CD. Specifically track 6: Crackerblocks starts off with a chimes type of sound that sounds reminiscent of Lark's part I. Track 3: Tidal Convergence starts off with what can only be described as the closest thing I've ever heard to Frippertronics/Soundscapes with the band eventually kicking in and playing above it all. If you like "The Talking Drum' check out track 5: Mysticum Arabicola. No, it's not a rip-off of 'The Talking Drum", but if you like that, you'll love this. Additionally, many DGM releases, particularly Mr. Fripp's brilliant soundscapes could be presented to this vibrant , young audience via remix and i'm sure that numerous "stars" in the remix community would be honored if presented w/ the opportunity to work with Mr. Fripp....any thoughts? paul ill paulill at earthlink dot net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 13:19:39 +0100 From: Peter Clinch

A strange reaction... according to the spiel, the point is to provide news of tour dates by DGM artists, releases, and the like. Is it better to get this information, which is plain and factual, from the most authoritative source, or via a discussion list where opinions and unsubstantiated rumour are not unheard of? If ET provides nothing but dry fact on current DGM activity, then its replacement by a DGM bulletin would be obvious and welcome. If that's all you read ET for, it does you a service by editing out all the other stuff. I don't see, however, that the DGM e-bulletin in any way treads on the feet of people who wish to opine on matters Crimmish, trade stories and releases, or whatever. Also any info on the bass rigs they toured with would be greatly appreciated- I'm looking to purchase a new bass very soon, and can not stop wondering what Wetton used to get such a distinct tone. Also as a side note- I purchased a single for "sleepless" the other day, and it has two remixes on it- very interesting listen. I also got a near mint copy of earthbound for $10. Is that a good deal?(I'm not sure how easy it is to come by) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 23:47:00 +0200 From: "Alexander Off" Subject: "Indisciple Mining Rocks" - Bootleg Hallo friends of the 80's-era of KC, I own the bootleg recording Indisciple Mining Rocks. Here's the tracklist from John Relph's Discography-page: Elephant Talk [1] Red Sheltering Sky Thela Hun Ginjeet [1] Turkish Tea (The Howler) instrumental [untitled] Larks' Tongues Pt 2 Recorded live at Stonybrook University, NY, 2/28/82, except for [1] recorded live on the Fridays ABC-TV show 12/5/81. Made to look like an official promotional release. The tracks of this recording are particulaly interesting because a) they are played fearlessly and with power b) two songs were recorded at a TV-show (!) and Thela Hun Ginjeet is a shortened powerversion c) you can hear the prototype-version of The Howler without lyrics and a song that never saw the light of day officially Now, why I'm writing this? Please make the suggestion (I'm announcing the ET-crew) to R. Fripp to publish a Collectors Club Edition that contains perhaps these two special concerts/shows and/or recordings of prototypes of songs and sessions that show the way from the idea to finished product (is a song ever finished?). And: Does anybody out there have a video of that special TV-show from 1981? The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at . But here's all the Crimson related news for your dining pleasure ;-) On our DGM page you'll now find King Crimson/Cirkus - Young Person's Guide to King Crimson Live the US release of which is anticipated towards the end of May. Cirkus comprises 25 tracks, 15 of which have never been released! All have been completely remastered by Robert Fripp exclusively for this collection. For this 2 CD set Fripp has personally selected what he considers to King Crimson's best live performances covering all the band's line-ups from the original formation all the way to the present and including some of the ProjeKCts One and Two live performances as well! The initial pressing of Cirkus is packaged in a uniquely eye-catching, limited edition deluxe gatefold, cardboard-stock sleeve specially imported from Japan! Because the US and European releases are occuring simutaneously, those who have pre-ordered the European release of Cirkus will get the less expensive US release. If you intend to get this, it's best not too wait too long so you can be sure to get the initial special edition pressing! There are some impending releases from Steve Hackett's Camino Records most notably Ian McDonald/Drivers Eyes!!! Due in late June, this is the debut solo release from Ian McDonald, one of the founding members of King Crimson and the main composer for the incredible Crimson debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. Guests on this album include Steve Hackett, John Wetton, Lou Gramm, Gary Brooker, John Waite, Mike Giles, Peter Frampton, and it includes a co-write with Pete Sinfield (the first since King Crimson and McDonald & Giles days). According to Ian at least one track is purely a McDonald and Giles track! I should also mention that Ian turns in a powerful sax performance on Steve Hackett's new album Darktown. This is an incredible album and simply the finest thing Hackett has done since Voyage of the Acolyte! We have great new live concert releases from Renaissance Records on their new Concert Classic series. Of special merit is the live release from UK from the tour of their debut record in 1978. This is the first official live recording featuring the original quartet of John Wetton, Bill Bruford, Eddie Jobson and Allan Holdsworth. It is especially significant that this recording includes three songs - Carrying No Cross, Ceasars Palace Blues and The Only Thing She Needs - with this quartet (oddly the latter song is missing from the track listing)! Fans will recall that these songs originally made their recording debut after Bruford and Holdsworth departure from the band and therefore lacked their presence. These performances are significantly different from what appears on Danger Money! Coming next month from Magna Carta is Liquid Tension Experiment 2 featuring more incredible work from Tony Levin! Well, let's just cut right to the chase! I know you're all wondering about LTE 2. Did they continue to live up to their potential? Or did they hit the dreaded sophomore slump? Well, I've listened to LTE 2 several times already and I can tell you quite honestly that Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Tony Levin and Jordan Rudess definitely did not hit a slump! In fact, IMHO, I think the second album is much better than the first! It shows that these musicians all know each other much better this time around and that much more forethought and planning went into this album to make it a deeper and more diverse work. Of course, I don't want to give you the impression that the boys don't just cut loose with some great jams! There's plenty of that to satisfy any LTE fan! Levin fans will simply adore his work on this album. We have some new labels in The Artist Shop including The Laser's Edge and Sensory . Among their latest releases is Gordian Knot. Gordian Knot was conceived as a project to demonstrate Sean Malone's abilities as both composer and performer. Although primarily Malone's project, Trey Gunn plays a significant role as peformer on almost every track and also as co-producer of the album. Another new label to The Artist Shop is Strugglebaby, home of the Psychodots! The Psychodots are guitarist Rob Fetters, bassist Bob Nyswonger and drummer Chris Arduser, all of whom are songwriters for the band. They began life as The Raisins before joining Adrian Belew as the other three quarters of The Bears then metamorphing into The Psychodots. They are definitely one of the most energized pop/rock bands around and when they get together with Adrian, it's an event not to be missed! Because the Psychodots and Adrian Belew are so closely intertwined, I decided to put up a joint Adrian Belew Presents & Strugglebaby page which you'll now find at . On our Fie! page we now have Peter Hammill/Typical, a new live double CD from Peter Hammill. Performances are all from '92, around Europe. Interspersed with his band/trio/duo activities, Peter has been performing purely solo shows on a regular basis since 1968. Several of these have appeared (in the usual predictably scrappy form) on various bootlegs. This collection of songs is the first official version of, "...whatever it is I do, wherever it is I go, alone on stage." This wonderful collection features over two hours of music and a 12 page booklet full of commentary from PH. On our page for new imports releases . YES-CLOSE TO THE EDGE Documentary of the band's 30 year career via interviews withall of the band members both past and present. 280 page hardback book illustrated with black and white photos. 6" x 10". This book was put together from extensive interview with all members of Yes past and present. I've already read this from cover to cover and can tell you that Bill Bruford has a lot to say in this.
