He was doing the washing up. Thrilling, eh? Nice house, though. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 09:28:26 -0700 From: Eric Kirchner DDPIL Subject: Pat M. Sighting and more I switched away from the Cubs home opener to VH1 where they were doing a "where are they now" segment -- Mister Mister was the band in question. While they were spending loads of time on the washed up pretty-boy lead singer, they did spare a split-second to say that "Pat went on to play with his favorite band, King Crimson". Not often you get to hear King Crimson on one of the so-called "music TV" stations! Other note: I've cringed seeing on the DGM site and E-T the torturous explanations for Bob being crotchety from time to time with fans. The point is old, and after initially feeling that Uncle Bob was naughty, I've figured out that "that's the way he is, deal with it" (I don't need to love him to love his music). What disappoints me with my fellow man (and woman) is the overwhelming, almost sick sycophantic way these folks continue to try to justify his actions. The bottom line is, he's rarely excited about mixing with fans, and can be rude about it. Whatever the reason is, rude is rude -- it can't be justified. If your brother/friend/lover did some of the stuff he is alleged to have done, you'd call it like you saw it. I'll never find out; I have no intention of ever approaching him -- I'll just enjoy the music and buy the records. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 07:15:01 -0700 From: "~" Subject: KC MIDI files Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows where to find some better MIDI files of the Crim other than those that are available on the ET Audio page. I'm using Wingroove and YamahaXG Softsynth as wavetable synthesizers but I'm still finding "Frame by Frame" kinda weak on the instrumental timbre's it appears to be programmed with (particularly the percussion sounds). Out of all us thousands of technically inclined ET'ers I'm hoping to hear something that can do a little more justice to what Fripp & Co. deserve. Unfortunately, I'm too busy with my own music to delve into this wholeheartedly, but I'd love to hear something more recently made. Any takers? Ok, that's pretty cool and fun but look ; now, we all have the opportunity to express ourselves to say "do it", "don't!". shall i say that if what we have to say is less beautiful than silence, we just have to keep our mouth shut ! JUST LET THEM BE. KING CRIMSON IS. AND THAT'S THE AIM. To respond to serious people, Trey and Pat have shown great ability so there is no way to worry. I can't say i prefer Bill and Tony, they're great, but that's history. In my mind, KC always looked forward, that's why i love it, that's why they're so apart from the prog genre. As another great band said (PRIMUS, wich guitarist, larry LaLONDE, is a great Crimfan) : "To Defy the laws of tradition is a crusade only of the brave". I trust them. There is two distinct world wich never collides. Let's be realistic. What needs KC ? What is KC ? This is strong, i mean strong, music, rough with gentle sides. We have already the best guitar players, with maximum sensibility, ability and intelligencia, so why would we search for others ? fred Frith will never do it, Reeves Gabrels will introduce great ego conflict on the band, Vernon Reid would be put out of edge, Bill Frisell will come up with a smile on his face. The rythmic part, well i loved the concept of double drumming, nevermind. The pair we had was very good, but if one get sick, just call up Tim Alexander, just too much brilliant... And the bass ? Guitar/BB in Gong/Mellotron Madness/Live Red/TOTP/UK The following has apparently been hanging around in my out-box since 18march99, so it's a little old, but . . . < lurk mode off > A few random musings regarding ET #577: 1) Daevid Allen did not teach Syd Barrett his Glissando Guitar technique...it was more the otherway around - Allen adopted it after having his consciousness altered as one of the 10,000 or so watching Barrett & Pink Floyd on stage at the Alexandra Palace on 29 April 1967, "The 14-Hour Technicolor Dream." Allen has so much as 'admitted' this in numerous interviews, but I for one am glad he did, since Barett went down the tubes so quickly thereafter that the sound may have been forever lost if not for Allen. 2) Bill Bruford played with Gong in 1975 (after Allen's departure in 1974) as a _replacement_ for Pierre Moerlen; another replacement was (ex- Nice + Refugee drummer) Brian Davison. Gong did not become "Pierre Moerlen's Gong" until 1979, with the release of the LP "Downwind." 3) How even the most wayward mellotron could result in an entire parking lot being "submerged in miles of tape" makes no sense to me. As I appreciate it, in a mellotron, the tape used consists of 15-inch (1+7/8 ips * 8 seconds = 15 inches) strips that are dragged across stationary playback heads and then snapped bacy to the starting position; there are no reels (and the amount of tape implied) involved. Any true authorities out there wish to confirm/deny? 4) As far as I know, none of what was to become Side 1 of the "Red" LP was ever performed live by the 72-74 KC. RF and JW were apparently writing at least some of it while on the road just prior to recording, but it wasn't fully worked out until at least 8 July 1974, one week after the tour was over and the trio of RF/JW/BB entered the studio. 5) The Top of the Pops 'performance' of "Cat Food" was just a "lip-synch" affair, I believe, so don't expect any startling new musical ground broken, but it would be fun to watch, no doubt. 6) UK fell apart for a number of reasons. One, Billy-B wanted to play jazzier stuff (heard that one before?) and had his first solo LP "Feels Good to Me", in which he was able to do just that (with Allan Holdsworth, among others), charting at the same time as the first UK LP. Secondly, on a related note, the band soon split into two factions. BB+AH (jazz) vs. Wetton/Jobson (rock). I recall reading an interview with Wetton around 1979 wherein he was quoted as saying something along the lines that he rememberd Bruford from their days together in KC as "one of the best rock drummers around" and recruited him for UK for this reason but, once the group came together, he realized the Bruford had "moved way out in left field" (or something similar) in the intervening years. I never understood Wetton's logic - I've never heard the 72-74 KC play "rock". The songs for the second UK LP that had already been completed before BB+AH left ("Carrying No Cross", "The Only Thing She Needs"! , "Caesar's Palace Blues", and maybe more) as well as Bruford's "The Sahara of Snow", were performed live by the original quartet lineup . . . and I think it's a shame it didn't hold together too. At the time, despondent that KC would never come out of hibernation, I thought this was as close as I was gonna get, and it wasn't bad at all, lemme' tell ya! I don't think Steve Howe would have helped the situation, though. In fact, it would probably have been worse. Holdsworth and BB were a perfect musical foils to Wetton and Jobson, and some very exciting music came out of this conflict. Asia, OTOH, was little more than a money-making proposition, IMHO. It was nice to see them all getting some recognition, but I saw it as simply a pay-the-rent gig. Perhaps the members feel differently, but no Asia fan I ever met had even HEARD of KC or ELP, and only knew about Yes because "Roundabout" was still getting airplay. And Geoff Downes? Hey, wasn't he in the Buggles? Right around this time, I started to feel real old . . . and I was only twenty-one! Now, listening to KC, RF, the ProjeKcts, etc., I feel young again! Really! < lurk mode on> ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 11:24:06 EDT From: Entreri187 at aol dot com Subject: Two Crimson Dream Line Ups 1st. Thanx, Fretus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 18:12:48 PDT From: "Dick Ross" Subject: Pat " the provocative" Mastelotto Dear ET, I've had the pleasure of seeing Pat Mastelotto play live here in Austin six times in about two months time, twice with his band Gum and four times with Projekct Three. For those who are only familiar with his playing before the projekcts surprises are ahead. Pat is opening doors, with his playing, unthought off. A suggestion was made, here on ET, that Robert Fripp sack Pat and get Terry Bozzio to drum for King Crimson. What a fine example of planing a landscape from the basement window. For Projekcet Three's tour of Austin Pat played the V-Drums supplemented with other pads, D-drums, an electronic hand drum and one electronic cymbal, set high in the front of the kit for both right and left hand riding, a total electronic drum set. Every improv was approached with a whole new set of voices. He could set up loops then play on top of them. He could stop some loops by laying his arm over the pad. It was amazing to watch. Pats drumming provoked. I found myself provoked to slap my knees and clap my hands to the music. I looked over the crowd at the Cactus and saw five women seated separately in the crowd all bobbing their heads back and forth together in time. Pat's playing provoked Fripp and Gunn to play some of the most on fire music I've ever heard. At times Fripp became an organic live wire, ripping like I've never seen before! Terry Bozzio was at the first Cactus show and came back for more to catch the last improv of the next night. HE was knocked out by the performance and was enthusiastic and talkative. I watched as Pat showed Terry his drum set after the show. As Pat began to take down that electronic monster I asked Terry if he was thinking about going electric. He told me of some of the nightmares he encountered playing electronic drums, like having first the right kick go down then the left kick, then the snare going dead leaving him with only toms to play while the crowd loved it, all making him wonder why he's doing this. He then told me acoustic drums are more forgiving and to do what Pat was doing takes perfect time that he said he did not have. Terry Bozzio holds Pat Mastelotto in high regard for his playing, his timing, and for his presents of mind on stage and before performance for the programming involved. Terry's plans are for a live performance of his "Chamber Works," with an orchestra here in Austin at Bass Hall! When dates are announced I'll let you know here on ET. You may want to come down to Austin for that. When I saw Pat play with Gum he was playing acoustic drums over loops and programs. Making that seam on the loop right in time is the only way to do it. The bass player for Gum, Mark Williams, would set loops of his electric upright bass being plucked then bowing on top of that. Pat and Mark sound so good together and with Mark's wife, Monkey, on sax Gum is a trio that you've got to check out! The word from Pat is that he likes playing the electronic kit for this stage in King Crimsoning. There is a lag time in the middi voices and at tempos of 160 and 180 bpm it can get ruff. Also at times the drums respond to loudly when he's trying to play with a softer feel, but Pat's on top of it. He is truly the man for the job. >From what I saw and heard from Projekct Three's tour of Austin the King's in good hands. I've read that many fans are apprehensive about the "new lineup" (which I basically consider a crystalized fraKCtal). I can only say this: I saw ProjeKCt Two in May 1998 and the only thing disappointment was that some buffoon snapped a flash and ended the show about an hour early. I was truly excited then, and I'm sure most fans who aren't already excited will be when we all hear what this group has to put forth. Since P2 was 3/4 of the "new lineup", and P2 was great in my opinion, my opinion is that P2+Pat will not suffer in any noticeable way. Here are a few excerpts for Crimson fans! Let's start with IRC Chats. We've had quite a lot of chats recently and I've finally gotten off my duff and put up the chat logs for them. So if you go to the IRC page you'll now find the chat logs posted for Adrian Belew. Check out our Camino Records page for the impending release from Steve Hackett, Darktown, which features King Crimson founding member Ian McDonald (Ian's own album, Driver's Eyes, will also be coming out on Camino in a few months). On our Fie! page we now have a graphic and soundbite up for Peter Hammill's forthcoming live double CD, Typical. Recently released from DGM is Bill Bruford & Earthworks/A Part, and Yet Apart. Bill Bruford has a habit of working with only the most incredible musicians even if we haven't heard of them yet. He's been touring with a brand new Earthworks comprised of saxophonist Patrick Clahar: a terrific young improviser, highly thought of in the London scene, played with Steve Grossman, Valery Pomarov, Incognito, among others; keyboardist Steve Hamilton: trained at the Berklee School of Music, Boston, U.S., played with Van Morrison, Pee Wee Ellis, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Burton, and others; Bassist Geoff Gascoyne: one of the most in-demand London jaz players, has played with Sting, Van Morrison, Georgie Fame, US 3, Tommy Smith, Guy Barker, and others. Bruford fans will definitely love this one! From Magna Carta the eagerly anticipated tribute to Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Encores, Legends & Paradox - is finally out! This great tribute features performances by Peter Banks, Martin Barre, Robert Berry, Geoff Downes, Jerry Goodman, Glen Hughes, Igor Khoroshev, James La Brie, Pat Mastelotto, Doane Perry, Simon Phillips, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, Derek Sherinian, John Wetton and many more; and features many of the great ELP classics! On our Papabear page we have a very neat new item from Tony Levin, his new book, Beyond the Bass Clef. An early review: ".... a fun melange of wisdom that could have come only from someone who's logged as many road miles and studio hours as Tony Levin. At times whimsical and at times profound, the book provides a unique glimpse into the life of a top-echelon working musician. Nowhere else can you learn as much about bass and life--we all benefit from Tony's decades of experience with both." ------Karl Coryat, Senior Editor, Bass Player Magazine This is an absolutely wonderful book! I can't emphasize strongly enough that you don't need to be a bassist or even a musician to enjoy it thoroughly! I can't play a note on anything! But I found it very difficult to put this book down. Beyond the Bass Clef is highly recommended! Also, on our import preorder page there is an impending release of the new Bruford with a bonus track. Please note that the release schedule for the King Crimson Japanese remasters have been bumped yet again (!), this time all the way back to July (fer cryin' out loud!). BRUFORD,BILL EARTHWORKS-A PART AND YET APART + 1 Japanese edition of the 1999 outing from the jazz-rock band Yes/Crimson drummer has been leading since 1987. Includes an undisclosed bonus track.
