This question is often updated to reflect everything from Collector's Club releases to what's available from Virgin, etc, so you may want to check it from time to time. Last week a new question about the presence of Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention) was added with regard to 'I Talk to the Wind'. This is now question # II.10. As far as a review goes, I made need another complete listening to make a judgement: my initial comment is 'I like it a lot". There are a lot of recent repeats (example: the inclusion of 'Schizoid Man' from the Collector's Club release of 'Live in Jacksonville'. The 'Neon Heat Disease' disc contains a lot of material from the upcoming 'Live In Mexico City'. If I do decide to create a review, of course it will appear at ET web under 'reviews' and not in the FAQ. -Steven Sthole (ET FAQmaster) "I've always thought of myself as one of the happy generation." - Albert Rosenfeld ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 10:26:24 -0400 From: nick naclerio Subject: i talk to the wind (with female singer) many years ago (10) eg records released a two cd set called A YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO KING CRIMSON with a major information booklet .its still available in the USA. among other rare tidbits is the song I TALK TO THE WIND with vocals by JUDY DYBLE (1968).i hope this helps Jochen (JRindfrey at aol dot cm) nick i work for rick ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 10:03:44 EDT From: Vicsevin at aol dot com Subject: "All the fun of the Cirkus!" Hello All, Received Cirkus Friday 4/2/99. Here's a list of titles for all who wondered, as I did, what is on it. Mexico City 1996 Dinosaur, Red, B'Boom, Vroom Vroom, Neurotica, Coda Marine 475, Lark's Tongues II Montreal 1984 from Absent Lovers Thela Hun Ginjet, Sleepless, 3 of a Perfect Pair Tokyo 1995 Indiscipline, Elephant Talk Jazz Cafe London 1997 1 ii 2 Northampton, NH 1998 Deception of the Thrush, Heavy ConstrucKtion Jacksonville 1972 21st Century Schzoid Man Orlando 1972 Ladies of the Road Fillmore West 1969 from Epitaph Box A Man A City, In the Court of the Crimson King Amsterdam 1973 from Night Watch Easy Money, Talking Drum Bensancom 1974 Improv. Bensancom Toronto 1974 Fracture Pittsburgh 1974 from Great Deceiver Starless Some of these selections are already released, some are not, some may never be. Good recording overall, nice blend of songs flowing into each other, reminds me of the 2 samplers God....... The discs are a little pricey, but as a diehard Crimson fan worth it. The miniature 'record jacket' is fun, "IT IS" a miniature record jacket, cardboard and all, even has little soft cloth sleeves inside to hold the cd's. My only disapointment, the advance listings for this release at the various CD stores online, stated this as a live cd, but one or two also said 'rarities'. I fully realize that the title is "Cirkus, the Young Person's Guide to King Crimson LIVE", but with the mention of 'rarities', I held out hope that maybe there would be one or two strange bonus cuts, either live or studio, I am dying to hear anything [if such animals exist], of non-ever released cuts from the early years of Crimson, from Poseidon, Lizard, etc. If there are any others out there who would like to hear some of this older stuff, as I say, if it exists, could we start clamoring for it, and petition the powers that be. Not to seem like I'm living in the past, I can't wait for the Projekct live cd's, what I have heard has totally knocked me out, Crimson /Projekct seems to be headed in the best direction ever. Contrary to Mr. Rauper's definitions of pirated material, there is still an infringement whether or not there is a monetary gain. He further rationalizes that pirating copyrighted materials is forgiven if in the face of "customer" demand. His arguments are specious legally, ethically and morally. To wit, there is, indeed, still an infringement whether or not there is a financial gain. I dare say, that your argument is fueled through personal love for artist's work and self-reflexive disappointment, rather than respect for another's property. There is no abridgement of ownership rights, in the free market situation in the face of scarcity and customer demand. Plain and simple, the right over control for any good (whether it be artistic or not) remains w/ the owner of that good. In the case of intellectual property like patents, and copyrightable material that right remains until statute expires (or is failed to be renewed), contrary to my opinion, whereas that right should be in perpetuity. In the age of mechanical reproduction (to use Walter Benjamin's term) there are some thornier issues artistically that we need not get into here. So much talk of the abridgment of ownership rights because the people demand it or sophomoric name-calling seems to me like situational ethics in the face of the immoral and illegitimate appropriation of another's labors. Mr. Rauper paints a picture of a tyrannical customer who plunders and rapes at will. Should this be the case with unsafe products? or free-rider goods? I know that the fruits of my labor should be controlled by me. He states, "If it weren't for the bootlegs the customer's interests would never have been identified by DGM or other record companies because they operate in acollusive non-competitive price fixed industry under the now scrutinous eye of the US Justice Department. " Is this blaming the victim? By pirating copyrighted material, and thieving one's rights the owner learns of new markets? Seems a bit tautological to me. I dare say that the creation of the DGM Collector's Club (of which I am a proud member) and other releases are a response to beat back the onslaughts of illegal recordings. I reckon that such artists as Frank Zappa and Mr. Fripp, felt artistically compromised and raped by the marketplace w/ their recourse being the release of "official" bootlegs. This leads to the ethical and moral arguments of illegal recordings. You accuse Mr. Fripp of "greed" and "arrogance." Sticks and stones! Regardless of intent or YOUR desires, these items are his to do with as HE pleases. You bought one single-use copy of USA several years ago, that makes you the owner of that copy (which I am sure is plainly stated on the packaging). You did nothing to create, market, develop, manufacture, sell this product. Regardless of the fact that it is "art," it belongs to Mr. Fripp or whomever has that copyright. ( if that copyright was attained legally). He is entitled to exhibit his good in a way he sees fit. Your comment about the "Department of Justice [DOJ]....and collusive price fixing" opens up a quite different can of worms. First, whatever pitfalls the current make-up of the recording industry--not to mention shady dealings in the past, I do not believe that their sales techniques contribute to the desire of rabid fans to acquire illegal recordings. Second, I assume you refer to the DOJ's efforts begun over a year ago to examine certain sales methods NOT unique to the record industry, namely "Minimum Advertising Prices" and "Co-op Advertising payments. For the most part this examination was initiated by retail practice of these tools, NOT distributors, like Best Buy whose actions help lead to the demise of many independent record stores. Suffice it to say, the DOJ has engaged in no action whatsoever, and it appears as if there "investigation" has fallen into desuetude through lack of evidence. It seems that when goods associated w/ fan culture are involved, a different set of rules apply in the minds of well-meaning people. I wholeheartedly endorse fan-dom ( I am one) , fan culture and "textual poaching." (Serious students of the phenomena should seek out Ethnomusicoligist Daniel Cavicchi's seminal work on Springsteen fans, "Tramps Like Us"). However, we should not allow our love for an artist, musician or even a sports team interfere with what is (copy)right. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 14:41:21 EDT From: "Dave Lane" Subject: Re: Bartley Buttsford's new Opus Chris Van Valen wrote: > Five points to anyone who finds the spelling error on the > album (Hint: I doubt he was referring to a former Governor > of New York) Well, you don't suppose it's a punned reference to a famous sax player, it being a jazz album and all? --Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 12:50:20 -0400 From: "James Patton" Subject: A Clockwork Orange I was watching one of my favorite actors, go through it's paces in "2001: A Space Odyssey", HAL9000. It is with a face redder than the ol' Schizoid Man that I return here to say that Gary Weimer was indeed correct. The Nuge did play on Michael Quatro's version of ItCotCK. I should've known better than to trust my shaky memory before opening my (virtual) mouth. I finally located my copy of the LP the other day and had a listen to it. Nugent's contributions are rather minimal, being mainly atmospheric sounds here and there, with a load of twang-bar noises at the end. I was also premature in blaming Mr. Q for the vocals. It was in fact the highly memorable... um... er... Well, whatever his name was, ok, so they weren't exactly flat, just badly done. Add to that the deliberate liberties taken, such as: "... the choir's softly sung, Three lullaies in an ancient tongue, For the court of the Crimson King." which totally throws off the rhyme. I could forgive such a thing once, but he proceeds to compound the felony in subsequent verses (except, of course, for the one that is omitted entirely!). These transgressions are not confined to the recorded sounds, however. Credits on the sleeve are given to "I. McDonald and J. Sinfield." On the label it is "R. McDonald and J. Sinfield." That's about all from me for now. Back to the shadows again... Jim Bailey ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 12:15:13 -0600 From: Greg Picklesimer Subject: RE: New Tunes Only, Please Greetings, I couldn't agree with David on this subject more. After seeing the Yes touring oldies show several times over the past 2 years, I have resolved not to see them again until they begin showing some advancement in their musical development and be willing to take the risks associated with promoting that new music. Love Yes, but can't justify spending concert fees to hear the same (great) stuff again, even if new personnel are involved. A tremendous contrast to this was the anticipation I felt when preparing to see P4 in Boulder last fall. I had no idea what to expect, the set lists weren't posted and even if they had been the names of the compositions wouldn't have fed any expectations I harbored regarding KC material. I could only rely on my experiences with the musicians involved that I could expect provocative and experimental music. I found myself concentrating much more during the performance than if I had been hearing familiar songs. Even though there were some unpolished areas, it was overall an extremely satisfying concert experience. I would like to express my appreciation to the members of the band for their willingness to take the risks associated with such an undertaking and encourage them to continue, even in the guise of King Crimson. I wouldn't mind being surprised by hearing an updated version of older material that wasn't exactly as I expected it to be, though. Particularly, if it's something outside the AB/RF repertoire. In any case, I'll line up for tickets immediately. Greg Picklesimer ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 04:53:59 +0900 From: "onmay1st" Subject: Cirkus (info from Japan) Hello? I have been subscribed for more than a year to this newsletter, which I find very informative and interesting. I am a guitar player, and needless to say I've always been interested in Crimson's guitar sounds, whether they are from Fripp or Belew. The following questions are thus regarding Fripp and Belew's sounds: 1. What kind of effect did Fripp use on "Asbury Park"? It sounds like some kind of synthesizer - and how does he get such a LONG sustain? 2. This question was posted some time ago, but I never saw a response: What is the effect that Belew uses on the "Three of a Perfect Pair - Live in Japan" video, which is setup on a stand, and Belew manipulates with his hand, especially on "Industry"? Thank you very much in advance! Carlos Najar kam6 at tcel dot com ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #583 ********************************
