The volume is almost everything i would like to hear from Muir's live gigs with KC. Almost because there is some more material from such live performances to be included. Better 44 fantastic minutes than nothing. Hearing the quintet one should imagine how would it be if Muir had stayed together.. There is a strong balance, as Fripp one day said, between Cross and Muir, contributing in a totally different way to KC sound if compared to the stronger future melodic (??) lines of the 73/74 quartet, that almost left Cross's violin out of the songs, leaving him some mellotron and electric piano shy participations. What a marvellous idea was the Collector's Club creation. I am positevely feeling that 2 months delay between the release of the volumes is too much time. Couldn't they do it monthly. The monthly expense would be for sure very worthful. happy easter to all of you. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 19:06:39 -0500 From: "Schroeder, John (San Diego CCC)" Subject: KC live in France 82 King Crimson live in France 1982, DGM release I am also interested in this disc, if anyone is willing to part with it. JHS ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 04:06:33 -0400 From: Manuel Subject: The new formation Welcome back, KC! IMHO the best thing that could have happened to the King is precisely this! Give the so-called "underdogs" a chance to shine instead of playing second fiddle again. Sure, we all love Bill and Tony, and they will probably be back, so what's the big tragedy? And sure, some (including me) are a bit nervous with the current emphasis on electronica; but I'm sure many followers will be surprised in a positive way with the outcome. Meanwhile, let those Crims with the most enthusiasm Crimsonize! I think they will rock the house. We all know Tony's tight schedule, and his fondness for the spot he holds on Peter gabriel's band. After all, Fripp doesn't take him mountain climbing! The problem With Bruford in relation with King Crimson, I can only guess, must be lack of enthusiasm. His heart is not currently into playing "rock" music (I think we all agree that KC plays "rock" music, or a highly mutated form at least). This seems to be a natural evolution for many aging rock musicians. Take Mark Knopfler, or ...gulp! Phil Collins. They were once imaginative rockers who brought innovation into the genre by drawing from external influences. As they grew older and, supposedly, more "sophisticated" they reverted to those influences and stopped innovating. One is playing mostly country music and the other is playing mostly crap. They have gone on record saying that they were no longer interested in "rock" music, and certainly don't listen to it for amusement; but they kept "working" on it; for the buck, I suppose. At least until they couldn't stand it anymore, and this is the main difference with Bill Bruford. As much as he has historically respected and coveted his stool, he guarded it, even fought for it! Now it seems his interests have changed, and he follows his own muse. good for him! Better that than to have him "working" in KC just for the fame and money. Maybe he will regain his enthusiasm when/if he grows tired of Jazz, and come back with a vengueance. But now, the important thing is that the King is alive! (And with a lower age average too!) As people are weighing in on what they hope KC will / won't include in repetoire in future shows, I'll throw my hat in and say: "I'd be very happy if only new tunes -- from 1999 -- are all that are played on any 1999 tour." My reasons: 1) This is a new "team" (PM, TG, AB, RF). It has new music to play. 2) Playing only new tunes concentrates attention on NOW. 3) Playing new songs only would possibly allow a wider range of new material to be come through. 4) It's risky, and this is the group to do it. Skipping the audacity of Reason Number 4 -- what I'm trying to get at is, this is a new time for KC, let's hear the musical spirit of THIS moment vibrate fully, freely and without reservation. But I suspect the difference between Projecks and King Crimson is that King Crimson is weighted with the responsibility of playing past KC compositions, whereas Projects don't have that requirement. Pity, though. Thanks for your time. David Kirkdorffer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 18:32:37 -0500 From: John Ott Subject: Pro vs No Pro, USA bootlegging. I do not think the Fripp and Gunn quotes are in conflict. Robert is saying don't send tapes to DGM unless you are an "Established" performing musician. It is the job of the musician (amateur, pro, hobbyist) to find and establish an audience, not DGMs. Trey is talking about the theory that you must be a full time professional musician to be a "player". He says that Percy Howard contradicts the theory. So the theory is not proven for all cases. Where is the conflict in any of this? Fripp does mention becoming a pro because one "has to" But Gunn is talking about something different. You can ask why doesn't Percy Howard "have to" become a full time pro if he is a "player". But there are many good players that are not full time musicians. If they can do it in their spare time, why not? And to the dude ( bounces by the way.) that says bootlegging USA is OK because USA is out of print: I thought USA II was announced as a possibility on the DGM diary? So are you competing with a future legitimate DGM release? And where is the greed in Mr. Fripp objecting to the copying of copyright protected material that is out of print? Is Fripp is getting rich by not releasing USA? and objecting to copying it? What a concept! He truly is an evil marketing genius! I am not going to release any records or sell them, But I object to you copying them. So everyone please send me your money. If it works for Fripp maybe it will work for me! That is correct, and it is still available. I have the cassette version of "A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson" which has the song. Look at the ET KC discography. Brandon George talks about the song in his review: "The inclusion of a rare and rough (although sprightly) Giles Dyble Giles Fripp version of I Talk to the Wind from 1968 AND the accompanying scrap-booklet, however, are the best features of this release. This sounds very similar to a technique used by Paul Dresher, a San Francisco guitarist whose Ensemble performed music for a number of modern operatic works. He used a tape-based system to record a number of different loops which were then used as backing tracks, gradually building up layers of guitars and bass. He also used it to record layers of vocal parts (though he was not the vocalist) which he then could mix live to get different effects and sometimes, different phrases. Subject: Music Improvisation Co. record offered Hello, the following is of a 'commercial' type nature: (With the mention of this record recently): I have the LP 'The Music Improvisation Company' (ECM 1005) which I am offering for a trade. The line-up is Derek Bailey- elec. guitar, Evan Parker- soprano sax, Huge Davies- live electronics, Jamie Muir- percussion, and Christine Jeffrey- voice. Track titles (worth listing these names!) are: "Third Stream Boogaloo", "Dragon Path", "Packaged Eel", "Untitled No. 1", "Untitled No. 2", "Tuck", and (my own personal favorite) "Wolfgang Van Gangbang". It was recorded Aug. 25-27, 1970 in London, and released by ECM in '74. The record cover has a small 'cut-out' tear in the upper left-hand corner, and the cover itself does have some major creases along the upper and lower right-hand corners (looks like it had been bent slightly around where the record lies). The vinyl itself is in Excellent condition (scratchless and very clean). I'm sorry I can't be specific in what I am looking for in return but my tastes are broad and will consider many different options & formats (tapes, other LPs, etc.). Please make an offer and/or send over your lists to choose from--preferably in the U.S. to keep shipping costs down. If need be I could sell it for $15. (My copy really has only value musically as the outer cover is pretty creased-up as I've said.) Now back to something more applicable. -- "I don't want to spend my life explaining myself.
