The 1971-1972 lineup of Boz/Fripp/Wallace/Collins played "Pictures of a City", and "Cadence and Cascade". Also, "Cat Food" was performed live on "Top of the Pops" in 1970. "Devil's Triangle" is obviously a reworking of Holst' "Mars - The Bringer of War", which the original Crimson lineup performed (and mercilessly elongated as evidenced on bootlegs!). Therefore, the only major piece of music not(?) to have a live performance (from "Poseidon") would be the title track. I've always wondered if Greg Lake felt a sense of deja-vu while recording "Mars" with Emerson Lake & Powell ;-) Dave White -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Dave White | Lake Shore Cryotronics | | Software Engineer | 64 E Walnut Street | |__white at geo2s dot mps dot ohio-state dot edu___|__Westerville, Ohio 43081_____________| [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 25 Sep 92 16:26:36 -0400 From: Randy Alley Subject: Poseidon Live Concerning which cuts from IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON were ever played live, I've heard several things: 1) Pictures of a City - Gawdaful Boz vocals with great backing instrumental work. Boz almost ruins it. From a radio station broadcast in Denver, Co. 1971 I think. 2) Mars - Named differently on IWOP, but played live in 1969 (on Frame By Frame live cd.) 3) Catfood - On a boot from 1973 in Germany, Wetton singing. Almost laughable. I'm sorry. Good playing, though. Catfood was also played on one of the British (?) TV Hit Song Shows (Zoom maybe? - with Keith Tippett & Greg Lake). 4) I think other examples exist, but I relating this from memory. I have another 1984 Live in Japan video that shows little bits and pieces from soundcheck. One bit has Fripp practicing "Fracture" on his Roland GR Guitar, unplugged, with a metronome at some UNGODLY tempo. He also pulls a Nigel Tufnel with his whammy bar at soundcheck. Bruford makes mention of wearing the "same Jacket that brought Lark's Tongues in Aspic to you, tonight". Belew just screams "no" a lot. The rest of it is the same footage from the previously described concert, but Bill is the one who is smiling and joking a lot and essentially freaking out. Incidentally, Fripp plays a MONSTROUS solo on "Sartori in Tangiers", one legato line is truly unbelievable. Still, I wonder how he plays his stuff night after night, hour after hour. His crosspicking is flawless. And Levin! He was great: some Japanese woman was rubbing his head with a pad or something and he was going: "Feels Nice!", then, they show him with his bass/moog bass and stick. Upon perusing the Discipline archives, I came across a comment by one reader that some of his favorite Fripp solos with King Crimson were "Indiscipline" and "Three of a Perfect Pair". IMHO, these solos were more likely played by Crimson's *other* guitarist! The lead guitar in "Indiscipline" has many of Adrian's touches; like the use of artificial harmonics, tendency towards density ( short bursts of 16th notes as opposed to long flowing succession of notes at high speed ), and other aspects of phrasing familiar to Belew fans. The "Three of a Perfect Pair" solo sounds like it was done with a Roland GR700 guitar synth ( I know, because I have one and am well acquainted with the GR700 sound! ). Robert's guitar synth was the GR300, which was less sophisticated, but had special properties of its own. Adrian had the GR700. Therefore, its a pretty sure bet that Adrian played the "3oaPP" solo. BTW, my favorite guitar work by Adrian with KC ( besides "Indiscipline" ) is on "Thela Hun Gingeet" (incredible feedback mastery), "Neal and Jack and Me", "Neurotica", "The Howler" (one of the most demented guitar synth solos in history),"Nuages", and who can forget "Elephant Talk" (Fripp's rhythm guitar, Tony's Stick, and Bill's drums set up the solo perfectly)? Outside of KC, "Big Electric Cat","Adidas in Heat","I Am What I Am", and the exquisitely moving "Ballet For a Blue Whale" deserve special mention. Also BTW, I like Robert's solos in "Sartori In Tangier","Distributed Being", "21st Century Schizoid Man". The "Two Hands" solo is *perfect*. Cheers, Paolo [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] The following is the latest version of teh Fripp discography. An unbelievable amount of King Crimson has been issued on LP and now re-issued on CD under various titles. Unfortunately, most of the material stems from the 1973/74 U.S. and European tours, thus drawing on ever the same music. Boring. Track listing will help to identify CD-re-issues under fake new titles (cut directly from the LP, probably) and help avoid the umpteenth version of 'Lark's Tongues..'. (I have been putting this together for sometime, and I have referenced many of the posts from rec.music.misc/cd and others. That is why some of the ghost writers may have their names on the list w/o actually contributing directly -ms) I should mention that I try to give the CD catalog number as much as possible, since many of the above CDs may be hard to find. I give the US number, because that's the side of the pond I reside. If someone owns the European versions and would like to contribute their numbers that would be great. NOTES: *note 1 - On the back of the video, there is a picture of Cooper, along with a few members of his band from 1975. Featured is a bass player that looks like Levin, but is not bald. *note 2 - Birdy contains recycled versions of songs from Peter Gabriel (1980 and 1982) which feature Levin on bass and Stick. *note 3 - The Peter Gabriel CV is a collection of Gabriel's videos, *not* a "live in concert" video. *note 4 - Levin appears on the album only on the song "In Your Eyes", an extended version from the album So. *note 5 - This CD is a very small subset of the "Frame by Frame" box set, issued, according to Fripp, so "collectors would not have to wait" for this promotional CD to get into their hands. It contains edited tracks of 21st Century Schizoid Man, In the Court..., Elephant Talk, Heartbeat; full version of Matte Kudasai, The King Crimson Barbershop, and "medley", a 1:20 with many of the "trademark" riffs from over the years. *note 6 - The bass player is listed as "Tony Levine", but that is close enough for a mention here. *note 7 - Uncle Funk may be Levin's own band. Does anyone know about this group and any possible recordings? *note 8 - Armando Gallo's books on Gabriel (titled "Peter Gabriel") and Genesis ("I Know What I Like" and "From One Fan To Another") feature pictures of Levin on tour with Gabriel from 1977-87. Levin was also featured in some magazines, including "Electronic Musician" from around 1987 concerning The Chapman Stick.
