The soundscape sample library. Soundscapes, available on the net, in some compressed/decompressible format like mpeg layer 3 (sacrificing quality for bandwidth), which are free for any musician to use. Because a lot of people would like to include soundscaping in their music and this would spark creativity is musicians worldwide. Obviously, this is not as good as making your own, but few can afford the echoplex(es), synths, effects, etc necessary to even *learn* how to make music in this fashion. And if people just want to listen, they can do that as well. Public domain would be a bad idea. People would repackage them and try to sell them as their own (though how big a market there is for straight soundscapes w/o a big name attached is unknown to me). Some sort of freeware type copyright license would be in effect, so that it could only be distributed if credited and not unmodified (how's that for a twist?). A lot of crap will be made. Not as much as you will hear on the radio, however. Of course, the big down side to this is if you want to have complete control over your work, not letting anyone else get their grubby fingers on it, re: the bootleg argument, you can't. That would have to be sacrificed in giving something to help and expand the musical environment of the world. Frankly, it's a tremendous idea, but no way am I going to approach Mr. Fripp with it. I do not feel like getting flamed with the somewhat familiar dry wit of one of my musical idols. But I say it, so you can hear, and maybe one day after I win the lottery and get down to some serious practicing, you will see my sample libary. - "Maybe I'm paranoid, yeah, that's my problem. Instead I ask him what's his favorite color. Musicians intimidate me; the whole "I'm not worthy!" deal. Dumb It Down. With all that has been going on about what is relevant and what is not on ET (a good 90% from what I've read here and sites such as Innervisions the last few weeks), I'm reminded of the quote by Richard Thompson at his site: "The only thing worse than professional critics: Amateur critics!" California Guitar Trio. "Pathways" arrived yesterday, via the California DGM office. I'm knocked off my feet and off the ground by the fine arrangements of Beethoven, by all the recording. I'm not sure that the arrangement here of Barber's Adagio are as strong; but I've just been listening today, and music takes time to filter past all the roadblocks in the mind; so I'm sure my reactions to "Pathways" will continue to alter with new listenings. I've written about this disc on classical boards, where I feel the wide sweep and precision of the playing will find an additional home. Great artwork also; a top-notch recording in every aspect. My first time and so on. And thanks for everyone involved with the newsletter. And just to piss all of you (almost) off, I'd like to say I'm listening Damage while writing this. David Sylvian can sing. And so does Trey. And now, something completely different... I went to see the John Wetton trio in Helsinki 12.9.1998. Nice show. Actually, it was a "prog-night", with Swedish Ritual, Finnish Ageness and finally John Wetton and company. They all played for at least an hour or so and as the concert started at 7.30 pm, it ended just before midnight. Ritual wasn't very progressive, but it certainly was loud. And so was Ageness, who displayed a bit more creative efforts towards making something really progressive. Anyway, I'm sure some were a bit stunned by the volume level since most of the people became to see John Wettons acoustic gig. I wish I had taken some earplugs with me. After the "support bands" had boiled the audience up, the quiet music played by the JW trio was welcome. Two guitarists and a keyboardist can't make a lot of noise. All the songs were soft ballads, as I expected, but still it was very nice to hear Wettons strong voice live. At times I felt a bit like an outsider, because I had never before heard the UK, Asia or JW tunes. Fortunately, they also played some KC. The second song was Book of Saturday and somewhere in the middle they played Easy Money. The last two songs were, of course, Nightwatch and Starless. The songs naturally differed very much from the original versions. The only common denominator between the two decades was Wetton's voice, which was worth hearing. They naturally didn't play the full version of Starless. Only the opening section and then some bars of the guitar stuff after that. About 5 or 6 minutes in total. The guys certainly had fun on the stage, especially Wetton. He was all the time joking with the crowd and his friends. In the end, before the two last songs, Wetton asked the audience what to play. Someone shouted "Schizoid Man" and after that "Nightwatch". Then the keyboardist said something like: "Hey John, let's play Red", and John replied: "Oh yeah, an acoustic version." Then he played something with his guitar and after a few seconds I realized he was playing Larks Tongues in Aspic, part II. Well only the main riff: dodadii dodadii didiii... thrang...thrangthrang...thrang... Everyone was laughing their heads off and once again Wetton got huge applauds. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it felt almost as if he had played it just to have some fun with Fripp's "authority". This was my very first KC-related live experience, and it was worth the money (10 dollars for 3 bands!). Although I found it a bit hard to realize that this was the guy who had played those powerful bass parts with King Crimson in the 70s', it was wonderful to see (and hear) him sing those unforgettable parts like Starless and Nightwatch. If you can, go and see it. I find this a nice little statement. It is obvious that ETers picked up on the statements earlier by both Fripp and Gunn that got down on ET a little (due to many posts often dealing little directly about Fripp/KC). ETers responded by posting their concepts of the value of ET, and what the ET Newsletter means to them in quite a sound and straight forward fashion. We know that Robert read these responses (perhaps understands ET a little better), and probably feels that he and Gunn may have performed a function in getting ETers motivated to state (for all to see) exactly what the value and purposes of the newsletter are or can be. I find this quite positive. I think that the comment/question that Jon Benfield made in ET #539 (about how many fans/ETers came about through the HORDE appearances) is interesting and worthy of an ET survey. This might be indicative as to whether KC should pursue these ventures in the future, and to (ummm) what the value and purpose of these sort of gigs are for the band. I enjoyed seeing KC at HORDE, but I found the fact that they were a lead off band (when few people were there at 4:45 PM) and played for only one hour, to be poorly scheduled (give me sufficient time and the starless and black of night please). (Tony Levin's Road Journal comes to mind.) A recent entry by Robert mentioned listening to a Beethoven quartet at night, and as counterpoint, a Haydn quartet in the morning. This is an area of interest, as I've been involved with the chamber music society here in Detroit for the past few years. The season here starts with the Juilliard String Quartet performing one of my favorite works, Alban Berg's Op. 3 Quartet; the program also includes Mozart's K421 and Beethoven's Op. 59, No 1. I wonder if that was the piece Robert listened to; sounds like it might have been one of the late Beethovens, though. I'd love to discuss the Bartok Quartets, but I don't think Toby would let that bird off the ground as it's peripheral to matters Fripp/KC. Well, it's a thought. I'm very happy that due to a new job (grungy, but more income), I'll be able to send the California DGM office a $96 money order for the Collector's Club. I'm tempted to send it after receiving my first check, but due to bills, will wait till October 1st. I'm leaning heavily towards a beautifully crafted Les Paul Gibson I checked out the other day. That is one reason why I asked Adrian about the Stratocaster; so, in retrospect, my question to Adrian wasn't completely dumb, but rather partially dumb. I was looking through the video library at Berklee's media center today and I came across a video of a question-and-answer session that Adrian Belew gave here way back in November 1985, when the breakup of Crimson Mark IV was still recent news and Adrian's new band, the Bears, was set to conquer the world. It was a strange event. He didn't play guitar at all (despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of audients were Berklee guitar students), and didn't have any prepared comments. Interesting points: -he said that the Crimson breakup wasn't necessarily permanent, and that he'd love to play with any combination of Tony, Bill, and Robert. Foreshadowing the projekcts... -he didn't care much for Fripp's work with Andy Summers but thought solo Frippertronics were nice and relaxing. -he can't (or couldn't in 1985) read and write musical notation, nor does/did he have a regular practice routine (this drew wild applause from the Berklee students, who have to practice for hours a day, and read and write music in every class). -when he gets into a rut, going to an art museum and reading about famous painters are his usual ways of getting out. -many of his lyrics come from thumbing through the dictionary and highlighting interesting words. He said most of "Elephant Talk" was written that way. He also looks for phrases that roll off the tongue, even if they don't make much sense (i.e. Matte Kudesai, Thela Hun Ginjeet, etc). -Best line, when answering a question on maintaining a balance between family life and life on the road: (paraphrase) "My wife Margaret understands that without being able to express the music that's inside me, I'd just be a... jerk." -someone asked him what his favorite note was. He thought about it for a moment then said, "I like A. A's nice, you can raise it or lower it, do all sorts of stuff. Yeah, A." Cool. It was an interesting hour, but (just like with Projekct 2) I kept wishing someone would throw him an electric guitar!!! Peter "I'm not the Twang-Bar King; that song was just a joke on egotistical guitarists who think they're better than they are. However, I >am< the Lone Rhino." -paraphrased Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 05:31:15 PDT From: "George Khouroshvili" Subject: Re: Piracy in Russia >Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 20:09:17 +0400 >From: "Temporary" >Subject: Rare CDs from Russia >The Acoustic Adrian Belew (1995), Exiles of David Cross (1997) >and Bruford Levin Upper Extremeties (1998) were reissued >in Russia two weeks ago. Well, these "independent labels" just stole the money from the artists as all other pirates. Neither Wetton, nor Belew and others haven't been payed for these releases. The price of these CDs is about $4 and the only (quite small) excuse for buying them is the financial crisis in Russia. All these releases contains notes that they were licensed by Russian Authors Society, but the legal foundation for that is very poor (I'm a lawyer myself). So if you want your favorite artists to get money for they work - don't buy that crap!!! By the way, the quality of inlays are always poor (and no lyrics as usual). I don't concider unofficial live recordings as something immoral (at least I can understand that), but unofficial reprints of the albums are criminal for sure. That's the real problem in Russia. I may propose DGM and other artists to contact RAO (Russian Authors Society) to stop this practice. After all, Russia is a member of manyinternational conventions and agreements concerning intelectual property, etc. RAO adress: 103670, B.Bronnaya ul., 6a Moscow, Russia, fax: (7-095) 200-1263 P.S. I'll try to find out the deteails on the "license agreements" with these "independent" (from the law I suppose) labels to provide them, if anyone is interested. Was anyone at the King Crimson show on the Discipline tour at the Landmark Theater in Syracuse, NY (1982?)? I remember it being a great show, one where they played "Manhattan". I think that would be a great release for the DGM club. I hate to admit this, but I have a short link from Ginger Spice to Fripp. Jools Holland was in the SpiceWorld movie. He opened for and introduced The Police at their Madison Square Garden show on the "Zenyatta Mondatta" tour. Jools was also on IRS records with the Police. Andy Summers was in the Police. Andy and Mr. Fripp, well, you get the idea. -- Tom Evans Jumprope http://users.aol.com/jumpropers ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 18:03:00 +0200 From: "chris.slade" Subject: Concert Please help me ! Subject: B'B'Boom Having just read Robert's postings over at DGM's web site on a 5 piece projeKCt to remove the immediate problems caused by Bill's accoustic drums, a work-free interlude turned up the thought that a perKCussive projeKCt with just the Banging and Clattering team would be fun... Maybe Ade on the V-Drums, Pat on a regular kit and Bill on anything that came to hand (a la Tony's old piano, from the BLUE interludes)?
