Toby [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: MICHAEL dot LEE at mail dot admin dot wisc dot edu Subject: Bruford Interview Date: Fri, 17 Jul 92 08:43 CDT A very interesting interview. I got the impression he sees Fripp as a little bit of a sham -- pretentious for pretention's sake. I know I'm one who would like it if radio (and MTV) was more progressive (with a lower-case p), so I could hear some of the more obscure bands. I think most people do settle for second best - because they aren't offered something better. Earthworks has an advantage, but even then, he "descends" into Yes for financial gain, and plays "Roundabout" one more time. ...that's enough. A fascinating interview. Thanks. Michael [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: kstuart at waffle dot sns dot com Date: Sun, 2 Aug 92 16:17 PDT Hello, Thanks for the excellent Bruford interview - to all those who had a hand in providing it for us! Reading it reminded me of a question that I thought some Discipline reader might know the answer to.... On the live Genesis album "Seconds Out", there is one cut from the tour where Bruford joined the band in place of the just-departed vocalist Peter Gabriel (allowing drummer Phil Collins to sing during the vocal sections and resume drumming during the instrumental bits). All the other cuts on the album feature Chester Thompson in this drumming role, which he has continued for the last 15 years. The album states that all the tracks are from "Paris 76/77" which implies Dec. 76-Jan. 77 and which ALSO implies that Bruford was replaced by Thompson in the middle of the Paris dates (the other less-likely interpretation is that the ONE Bruford cut is from Paris 1976 and all the other cuts are from the NEXT tour and recorded a year later in the same city...). Does anyone know the actual details about this? My first exposure to Crimson was through Adrian Belew's remake of "Heartbeat" on his Young Lions solo record. I wanted to hear how the original version must have sounded with the likes of Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford playing on it, so I checked out Belew's old group and the story goes from there... I would like to keep up with the latest Crimson news, especially in the light of recents rumors concerning the group's reformation, so please sign me up!!! If you have any contact with Mr. Fripp, please let him know that I, for one, would very much like to see him and the rest of King Crimson make room in their touring schedule for San Diego, California, USA. Adrian Belew comes here every year on his solo tours, so maybe he'll convince Mr. Fripp that San Diego will be worth his while. *8-) I'm sure that there are enough fans here! *8-) *8-) *8- ) Hope to hear from you soon... If you can imagine a combining of Peter Gabriel's "Passion", the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and a restrained David Torn guitar, you get some idea of what this CD is like. It is mostly quiet and ambient, and alternates between dark and light songs, with excellent guitar work throughout. The music is in the same vein as his earlier works with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois (read: "ambient, heavily treated sound"), but it is musically much more colorful and intriguing than his previous works (e.g., "Hybrid"). Brian and Roger Eno participate, along with Daniel Lanois, a percussionist and some violinists and "voices", but the instruments are not so much treated as they are instead complemented by unique synthesizer sounds. Perhaps not suprisingly, it's on 4AD, a label that also carries such groups as the Pixies, Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil (ambient compilations)-this CD lies a lot closer to Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil, and in fact is located in the New Age section. For a relatively dry year in good or otherwise creative music, this CD qualifies as among the best I've heard in many months. - Brian [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] To join this group or have your thoughts in the next issue, please send electronic mail to Toby Howard at the following address: toby at cs dot man dot ac dot uk The views expressed in discipline are those of the individual authors only.
