One disappointment regarding the enhanced CD format is that it seems to make the music-CD portion unavailable to play on the computer. Is this a limitation of Nightwatch specifically, or is it generic to all enhanced CDs? Similarly, the DGM content on the enhanced CD is GREAT ! Even more there than on 'Sometimes God Hides', but I wish I could leave the music playing while I work in another window. The files for it have .MOV extensions, but neither quicktime nor MS media player recognize them as quicktime format - are they a special proprietary format, or is there another player for them ? RE: a non-stage video of "Easy Money" and/or other songs - I do recall seeing a video once on VH1 (or MTV?) of '73-74 KC - I believe that this would have been '88, or maybe early '89 ? I do not believe that it was during Robert's guest hosting, as I missed that entirely (what was the date for that ?). Don't remember much specifically, not even whether or not it included Muir. Dave's Energy Guide is a Trey Anastasio (Phish guitarist) composition. It resembles Discipline, although to my ears it sounds more like a League Of Gentlemen instrumental. They haven't played it in years, though Trey sometimes goes into a Fripp-like digital delay jam, which sends all of rec.music.phish into an idiotic They Played DEG/No They Didn't argument. Very silly. According to Dean Budnick's book The Phishing Manual, the original title was Dave's Energy Guide (A Memo to Robert Fripp). RF was an early influence. Dave is Dave Abrahams, a childhood friend of Treys. Hell, even the folks at the Nashville Extravaganza seem a bit confused. Here's what I know thus far: ProjeKct 2 will be performing at the Cannery (map available on the Adrian Belew WWW Site) on Friday, February 20th at 11:30 pm (CST). The Cannery is located at #1 Cannery Row. Their phone number is (615) 251-0979. This information came directly from Adrian, himself. The last time I checked the NEA website, they had them listed as performing on Thursday. I am still trying to find out more info on ticket prices. I don't think you will have to pay the $150.00 event charge just to see ProjeKct 2 but I will confirm this within the next day or two. I'm steering clear of asking TicketMaster since there have been reports that they're not even listing it. Any new information will be promptly posted on the Adrian Belew WWW Site. Please visit and if you have any further questions, please ask! That's why I maintain the website. The URL is located at the end of this post. When you make your plans to see the show, stay over on Saturday and see the Irresponsibles (the Boston band produced by Adrian). They're an excellent band and their new CD, "Backwards Boy" is a truly great piece of work. More info on the Irresponsibles is available on the Belew web site as well. Well, here's some more. I happened to be present atthe first UK concert, a mighty event replete with hair-raising Frippets especially during the opening 'Here Comes The Flood'. We already knew about Dusty, but when Peter Gabriel introduced the band he announced his invisible helper with 'sitting in comparative obscurity we have Ned Strangler, the West Country punk'. There was some confused clapping, until some bright spark in the circle put 2 + 0 together and yelled 'Fripp, you coward!' This galvanised the crowd into confused shouting. PG quietened them by saying 'he would come out, but he has very bad acne'. In subsequent years it dawned on me that either RF has some unique skin treatment or PG might have been lying. Anyone else out there remember the ICA afternoon of RF and Keith Tippett in '79 or thereabouts? Mr T's first solo of the afternoon is still ringing in my chest. I'd no idea a piano could make such sounds. Who asked RF to stop 'doodling' on the keyboard, and did RF ever repeat the experiment; playing that funny little Roland piano/strings thing into the tape to create cheesykeysotronics? One last thought: being from the West Country myself (much further west than Dorset, to be fair) I must congratulate young Bob for not at any point using the word that out west is collective noun, friendly greeting and simple lament. Cutting this word from one's vocabularyis like going around one-handed but he achieves this with singular ease, and probably for the best. But it seems pretty apparent to me that the psycho part of ToaPP is strikingly similar to THRaKaTTaK....Nuages, Industry, and No Warning are all dead ringers for KC circa 95. The thing that surprises me the most, in comparing the two albums, is that the ToaPP freak-outs seem so much more coherent than the stuff on THRaKaTTaK. Now, there has been much spilling of ink about THRaKaTTaK, one of KC's more controversial albums, and why it's so [fill in superlative adjective here]. My question to the peanut gallery is this: does anybody else hear this? Dig Me doesn't really sound very much like contemporary Crim (neither does LTIA III--my personal favorite 80s KC "tune"), but those other three really seem like 95 KC sans Mastalotto and Gunn. Just ordered Night Watch, VROOOM, and something called Prometheus from DGM. (I've seen VROOOM in stores, but it's always been between 13 and 16 bucks...it's an EP, for christ's sake. DGM has it for nine.) Prometheus , as I understand it, is a bunch of those wacky Crafties =) That should be fun when it gets here... Also....not to rub it in to the Quebec folks but KC stuff is reasonably easy to find around here (the US Midwest....well, as long as you're actually in a city anyway ;) ). I know some folks have been having problems finding some Crimsoid discs, but here's some advice. Go into a really really big store--like Borders or Best Buy, one that doesn't just sell music--and ask about a record. If they don't have it, ask them if they can order it from their distributor or however that works, or ask em to check around nearby stores. You might hafta drive a ways, or they could be really nice and get sent there, and they'll just give you a call when it comes in. (This is how I got a hold of the Great Deceiver...at a Best Buy. They ordered another one after I got mine, apparently thinking KC might be the next Big Thing or something. As far as I know, it's still there =) ). Phish covering Discipline? I'd love to hear that. I think it'd be even cooler to hear them do Indiscipline!! KC music is being used here in Russia as part of a half-hour infomercial for an anti-auto theft device called Lojack. The program, which I've seen broadcast three times already on NTV (channel 4 here in Moscow), is a simulation of a car theft and subsequent police chase aided by the electronic homing capabilities of the Lojack device. The show starts with the crashing mania of the opening section of the VROOOM version of VROOOM. The crime and the police chase soon commence, and after a while the first quiet bridge section of VROOOM is heard. My favorite part is the manic rapid-picking intro to Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part III, which accompanies some wild footage of the car chase. As expected, Lojack saves the day as the thieves are cornered and apprehended. This isn't the first time KC has been used on TV over here. Back in '95 I remember hearing Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I (specifically, the violin/guitar intro right after Jamie Muir's finger piano pluckings) as part of some other commercial. I'd be surprised to learn that Fripp signed-off on this music being used to advertise Lojack, so I assume it is being used without permission. I certainly didn't notice any acknowledgement of KC (in any way shape or form) in the closing credits, but I'm not too surprised. Russia is rife with copyright infringement as well as software/music piracy. No wonder KC skipped Moscow during the Spring '96 European tour (sigh). We'll only be going if we can obtain tickets in advance; we won't be headed down to grovel for spares at the front door. The current plan is to probably drive back after the show Friday night, but we might get a hotel. Whatever happened to the talk of a solo Fripp soundscapes that weekend, anyway? One ET reader commented that a CD bootleg matching the Live In Japan 85 video predated the official video release and didn't sound as good. My understanding is that the original show was broadcast on Japanese network (and satellite with digital sound); that would presumably be the source for the bootleg. Adrian remixed the audio for the VHS and Laserdisc release, and that would explain the improvement in sound quality. Speaking of Live in Japan 95, has anyone else noticed the low quality of the overhead drum-cam footage of Bill and Pat compared to the rest of the shots? I wonder if those cameras were of a lower quality than the others, where the shots are a lot more film-like in appearance. For what it's worth, the soft effects and focus tricks of the 95 vid don't bother me as much as other people, I think the video is gorgeous. Perhaps the Sylvian and Fripp vid prepared me for the production (though the S&F video is more attractive IMO). Regardless, the color of the 95 video is spectacular regardless of other production values. Is Frejus coming out on Japanese laserdisc? I bought the RFSQ video on VHS when it was apparent that an LD release was not coming, maybe it's time to do the same for Frejus. I really prefer a more durable media than tape... I sure hope DGM gets a US branch going, I miss the convenience of Possible Productions. ***Mike St. Clair***mstclair at iglou dot com***irc:SaintMick*** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Feb 1998 01:22:21 -0500 From: Matthew Thallmayer Subject: Fripp on cover of Feb. 20th Century Guitar. What about using nature as a backdrop >(volcanoes, gysers, the aurora, ocean waves, etc...) either in live or >video form? Could you imagine Fripp conducting a Soundscape on a cruise >ship to Alaska, and playing to the influences (grabbed from the air) of the >aurora borealis? Could this idea be workable? I could suggest a unique location if anybody thinks the idea *is* workable. There's a cattle property nearby to me in the australian outback on which are seen the most remarkable sunsets (greatest light show on earth ;-) I'm actually having serious discussions at the moment with the local council here about conducting a prog festival on the property in either 1999 or 2000 and would be interested in the thoughts of people on this list. The property is 80000acres in size in an area that's remote even by australian standards. The location for stageing is at the base of a large rocky outcrop which rises 100 or so feet from an otherwise flat landscape and would provide a natural amplitheatre. The sandstone rock of the outcrop faces west and glows with a vast variety of colors during the sunset period. There is no sign of civilization in any direction for as far as the eye can see from the summit of the outcrop and the nearest (small) town is approximately 35miles away. The tiny township of Muttaburra, from which a recently discovered dinosaur "The Muttaburrasaurus", is also in the region, which I think adds to the fun of a prog-festival tentatively titled "The Dinosaur Rock Festival". There's a reason for wanting to conduct the festival here aside from the fact of wanting to see a prog-festival myself without having to travel around the world to do so. This region has been severely damaged economically over the last ten or more years by the effects of drought, and even though there has been good rain in most parts the last two seasons, many families are still suffering the after-effects. (eg:this region apparently has the highest per capita incidence of suicide in the southern hemisphere). Most Shire Councils around here are desperate to attract "tourist dollars" into the region and the prog-festival idea is my way of trying to encourage some of that money to find it's way where it's desperately needed. Besides...the australian dollar is very *cheap* compared to most other currencies at the moment :) Sorry to take up so much bandwidth with a "travelogue", but if you think the idea has any merit, I could use your replies to help convince some of the people I'm negotiating with at the moment...most of whom think Garth Brooks is *progressive music* Ken Taylor e-mail zingari at bigpond dot com ............................................................................ ....... ....Visit my "Shrine" to ELP and Keith Emerson at....... http://www.users.bigpond.com/zingari ......Midi Transcriptions, Improvisations, Tutorials....... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 1998 15:07:01 +0000 From: kate Subject: another rant... g'day, 1) The fake review was brilliant, had me laughing for days. Email Gary for the Full Monte if you fancy that. -- Toby ] Hello Friends! In the last newsletter I said that some very exciting things were coming up and that I could hardly keep them in. Well, now's the time to let them out! And I'm saving the best for last! First I should mention some information about the John Wetton CD, Chasing the Deer. In the last newsletter I stated that this was to be a limited edition release. However, since that time there have been conflicting statements between the distributor and label as to whether or not this release actually is a limited edition. These conflicting statements lead me to believe that it really is not a limited edition after all. There are good and bad points with everything. I suppose the good side to this is that everyone who wants a copy will get one. The bad side is that it just won't be an instant collector's item. In other John Wetton news, I know that many of you have been holding off buying the extreeeeeeemely expensive Japanese import of Wetton's Arkangel CD in hopes that there will be an American and/or European (and therefore less expensive) release in the near future. The latest news is that Arkangel will receive a European release next month on the Eagle label. It is also reported to me that there will be two bonus tracks on this European version. Information on ordering both this and Chasing the Deer can be found at . The Artist Shop now has a NEW TOY!!! As we've continued to expand in a number of different directions, it has become a little more difficult to find just that particular thing that you may be looking for. To help with that we now have The Artist Shop Search Engine! You'll find it at . However, just because we have the search engine doesn't mean I'll be changing the structure of The Artist Shop anytime in the near future. I feel that too many of the other on-line CD shops are structured around their search engines. And that's ok for customers who always know exactly what they want. But I've intentionally structured The Artist Shop to be a fun browsing experience - a place where you can go when you haven't the faintest idea what you're looking for, but you know you want something - a place where you just might stumble onto something you didn't expect at all! [ ... edited ... ] So, how are things in your town. I have to say, things feel pretty good in this town! Does anyone else have >a good answer? No, but I have some theories on why women don't like Crimson music: 1) You can't dance to it. 2) The singer doesn't look good. 3) You can't remember the tune without listening 10 times. 4) King Crimson fans are ugly or/and can't dance. 5) Crimson music make lousy serenades (imagine a guy with a guitar at 11 p.m. beneath a window playing soundscapes, or screaming on top of his lungs: "BROUHAHA! BALDERDASH!! BALLYHOO!!! IT'S OOOONLY TAAALK!". He will either end up a lonely guy, or in jail; probably both!) And why is that? Because women are brain dead! And why are they? Because they're raised that way! The fact is, we men know that women are potentially smarter, have greater sensibility and common sense. It's a well documented scientific fact. So what do we do? We rot their brains when they can't defend themselves: While they're still children. We give them baby dolls to maximize motherly instincts. Later we toss them barbie dolls to induce frivolity (paradox: "frippery"=synonym of frivolity) And make them watch the huggie bears to induce dumbness. As a result, we succesfully kill their intelligence. Artificially induced stupidity. A teenager trained to consume cosmetics while ingesting soap operas and juvenile series. All this while chewing strawberry flavoured bubble-gum. Later in life, a woman raised like this is known in western civilization as "an exemplary housewife". And that in western civilization, others achieve more dramatic results by way of religion and tradition. Please excuse me for exposing the plan. I'ts just that most of us males ARE FALLING FOR IT TOO! Then again...I have this other, rather disturbing theories: 6) Women are too smart to listen to King Crimson. 7) King Crimson is part of a plot to keep men busy while women take over. Think about it! ...It's only talk. Manuel. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Been a real while since I've posted anything at all. It's really great to see ET is continuing and keeps getting better. Thank you Toby, et al. for all your hard work in getting these out to us. I received from a colleague at work a Keith Richards CD for Christmas and thought it was a cruel joke on his part for having given it to me as gift. Turns out the dude really thought it was a great work and believed my library would be enhanced by its presence therein. NOT! I never imagined that half dead rockers like Mr. Richards even had the energy to put out solo works on the side while still managing to gather the other Stones for countless farewell tours. Anyway, I shlepped over to HMV record shoppe yesterday and exchanged the unopened Keith CD for....(drumroll)....THE NIGHT WATCH LIVE!!!!!!! It BLEW ME AWAY. I've listened to the two disk set thrice already and it really rocks hard. For the unfortunate out there who haven't made the purchase yet or planned not to for whatever reason, wait no longer and buy it. It's worth every penny and more. The Improv: Trio and Fracture tracks are particularly phenomenal. And for those who didn't already know it, the set comes enhanced for CD rom with Quicktime and Macromedia showing a brief video clip from the band's Live in Japan Video and also has a compleat discography. Pretty cool stuff. I missed the in-store signing for the DGM launch at the uptown HMV in New York- This is the second time I've missed the Crimso in similar promotional events held in NYC due to inability to get out of work. The people at DGM were nice enough to send me a post card announcing the event well in advance and I still couldn't finagle a way out. You can bet that I'll be first in line when they announce a tour passing by my way though. I'm probably one of the very few fans of "Two Hands" on the list... in fact, it is probably the crimso song least mentioned in this digest! Carsten dot Collatz at t-online dot de (collatz) mentioned real-world meanings and associations for several King Crimson songs. There are several others that he did not mention, and no doubt we'll get a lot of them listed here before long!: ISLANDS: This I always associate with the John Donne quotation "No man is an iland intore of it selfe; every man is a peece of the continent, a part of the maine...". It is also a piece which I personally associate with the area I live, on the coast of this distant island... LADIES OF THE ROAD: is pretty obviously about groupies. HAPPY FAMILY: is about the dissolution of the Beatles. (BTW - Lizard is an album that I never really liked, but after ten, fifteen years of listening, it has grown and grown to be a firm favourite. It just takes the longest time...) STARLESS/STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK: both take their titles from Dylan Thomas's "Under Milk Wood", but Starless also seems to tell a real story that is unrelated to this work. Anyone any ideas? BEAT: Much of this album is connected to the beat poets, Neal and Jack and me for instance. Satori in Tangiers, it has been previously mentioned, takes its title from a chapter of a novel (IIRC). any more? Years ago, I saw in a record catalog something called "Giles and Fripp." Does anyone know if it's available, maybe as an import? (I got McDonald and Giles as a X-mas present some years back, in vinyl form; I believe that that album was an import.) If anyone does have the Giles and Fripp album, could they possibly tape it for me? Respond by personal e-mail. Another thing... I heard on the radio back in 80 a very rare version of "I Talk to the Wind," recorded with a female vocalist. I'd also like to get a tape of this from someone, if it's no longer available. ------------------------------ End of Elephant-Talk Digest #461 ********************************
